They have some audiobooks on the Gutenberg site but they all seem to
be Livrivox recordings that they listed. You get a bigger collection
if you go to the source.

Documentaries have a lot of fluff. You might want to look into straight
lectures -- The Teaching Company puts out some great stuff.

I watch a *lot* of lectures.
For example, there is a ton of TED stuff.
And there are plenty of WWII lectures around.

Of course, the problem with lectures is that they suck when it comes to
organization for a lot of them.

And a lot are "personal stories" which are fine, but, I'm more in it for
the overall strategy and outcome and political change.

Anyway, whatever is on Youtube is fine by me (there is a *lot* on youtube,
as you know).

You're absolutely correct. OTOH, sometimes a really basic-level guess
might be valuable to someone. Do you have a real solution?

I realize you were responding to someone else, who was right in that a
"basic guess" is often unhelpful depending on the details of the problem
set.

In your case, you gave a basic guess which was pretty good in that you
suggested a web page which actually might work but, you just didn't know
that the conversion of the video wasn't the problem, and, even if it were,
we wouldn't normally use a web page to do that.

So, your guess was pretty good and well intentioned; it just didn't solve
the problem (which is OK as you were trying to help).

On the other hand, there's the type of "guessing" that nospam and the Jolly
Troll do. Their guessing is decidedly unhelpful, and, in fact, is never
meant to be helpful.

Their guessing is always meant as an insult.

At best, guys like nospam intimate that something exists (when it doesn't
and they never tested it and they don't care that almost none of the
products they suggest actually work when you actually try them).

For example, I can't count the number of times nospam has suggested Airdop
on Linux, when he *knows* Airdrop doesn't work on Linux (and never will).

His suggestions are never helpful. So, I just ignore them, out of hand,
having been burned so many times by nospams guesses (ask the cranky puss
what happened when *he* tried nospam's guesses). They never work, and the
sad part is that nospam *knows* they can't work. He doesn't guess for your
benefit - he guesses so that he can *say* that iOS can do it - but it never
can - so he is just spewing propaganda for purposes wholly unknown to me.

Even worse are the guesses by the likes of the Jolly Troll. He simply
googles and finds an app that *sounds* like it does the job - but again,
he's being as disingenuous as nospam when he says "I found 500 apps that do
what you ask" because, when you *look* at the apps, they don't even do
remotedly what you've asked.

Then there are the guys who are *trying* to be helpful, like Savageduck,
who recently googled and listed a half dozen apps, all of which failed but
I didn't have the heart to tell him that so I let it slide because he was
*trying* to help, which is entirely different from what nospam and the
Jolly Troll are trying to accomplish.

So, how lousy a guess is depends mostly on the intent of the guess.

Nospam is always malicious and he always says it works but he *never*
provides a solution that works. Jolly Troll doesn't have the intelligence
of nospam, so, his guesses are even worse.

Your guess was pretty good - but it failed only because of details - but
the intent was sincere, as was SavageDuck's.

Rod Speed's sincere attempt to resolve the issue is what solved it once and
for all - where Rod Speed actually guessed and then when I *tested* his
guess, Rod Speed went back and tested it himself - and then Rod Speed
sincerely figured out the solution (which was to do the same thing multiple
times) and *that* finally worked.

So, you see, a *guess* is fine - but there are two types - which are the
sincere guesses from the likes of you, Rod Speed, and Savage Duck, and the
insincere guesses by the likes of the Jamie, the Troll, and the spammer.

When I want to listen to operas on my iPod (wonderful for when taking
walks)

1. I go to the Youtube address on my Macbook (running Snow, using the
Safari on it) of a video on operas, choose one and note the address.

2. I then copy that address into, for example, <http://mp3fiber.com/>
(this one handles longer productions. For short ones,
<http://www.youtube-mp3.org/> does the trick).

3. When downloaded to my Macbook via one of these website facilities,
I add it to my iPod. It would be as easy to add it to my Pad if I
wanted to do that.

I have not researched how to do the whole process on an iPad but if I
did, I would be reluctant to wallow through so many of the smarty pant
answers that seem to reside on this usenet group. If you ask here
anything, you get mostly *misunderstandings* based *not* on bad
questions or attitudes of the questioner but on almost ingrained blind
spots or autism on the part of the folk answering.

Btw, you can't fool me, I know how much you all love me deep down!

This is true.
You have been around a long time on Usenet.

Woo hoo!
Rod Speed found the trick!

The trick on iOS, essentially, is to turn the screen off *three* times, and
on that *third* time, the screen actually *stays* off!

To summarize, on Android, you just play the youtube video on any browser
and simply turn off the screen once.

On iOS, you have to know *not* to even *use* Safari (because it's more than
a half-dozen manual steps just to get it to play a single Youtube URL!),
and to use Chrome instead, and if you do use Chrome, you follow this
non-intuitive sequence below which entails turning the screen off *three
times*!

1. Enter the youtube URL into Chrome, e.g.,
   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfRq-JeUCSM (WWII documentary)
   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9XzLzMAQ-Q (History of the World)
2. Press the side button the first time, to turn off the screen
3. This blanks the screen but it also turns off the audio
4. Don't be discouraged - Press the side button again, a second time
5. Now you get a play arrow but no sound
6. Press the play arrow to get the video sound to play
7. This plays the video but leaves the screen still on
8. Press the side button a third time to shut off the screen yet again
9. This third time you turn off the screen is a charm!

Woo hoo!
Thank you Rod Speed for finding the non-intuitive trick to turn the iOS
screen off while listening to Youtube audio at night!

I'm glad you have a partial solution.

OT, this reminds me of Skype that last I checked wouldn't let me have
a video conversation unless I had an operating video camera myself. I
would think this would be up to the parties. I can imagine many cases
when you want to talk while looking at the other party, or one's new
grandchild, but the other party doens't car if he sees you. I'll
admit that I have a camera now, $3 at a "surplus" store", and most
people have one, but it's still pointless afaict.

Well he's non-too bright. Must be all that 'power user' eliteness ;-)

Of course 'non-power users' like us had the answer years ago from a
quick google search or experimentation and exploration of iOS, but we
just don't know how to make life hard for ourselves as 'power users' do

He just has admitted it.

And you haven't admitted that it is possible to
move files without using a cable or a network
even with the silliest definition of a network.

no need for sd cards when far better and faster methods exist.

Irrelevant to your bare faced lie that it can
ONLY be done with a wire or a network.

And the SD card is MUCH faster with very large files
and tablets that have a popout SD card slot.
