I don't exactly even understand how they get away with being called a UNIX at all. They really shouldn't be called a UNIX. Mostly when I think of UNIX I think of UFS for the file system, and there are many others. I use XFS and EXT4 on Linux, and UFS and ZFS on BSD. HFS in my humble opinion is not a file system worthy of being called a UNIX operating system. Others feel free to disagree with me all you like. It's not even truly supporting upper / lower case, even if you take that option. They don't seem to keep up with the latest either. Apple is clearly looking for consumers. When Jobs created NeXT he wasn't thinking about consumers. He was thinking about Universities, science and higher end workstation class machines. I owned a NextStation Slab 040 myself. So it was interesting watching the merge of NeXT into the Mac. I used to own and use for my personal desktop two Sun Microsystems SuperSparcs as well. He went all consumer when he came back to Apple because that's always been Apple's focus. He talked up UNIX because Apple didn't sell very many Macs and Jobs will do and say anything to make a sale. If it doesn't make enough sales, he tends to pull out, RIP XSERVE, XSAN, XRAID, etc etc. Now Apple makes maybe 5% from the Mac, and the rest is all related to iOS. Greater than 50% from the iPhone all by itself. 15 ~ 20% from the iPad. The rest from iTunes, software et al. When they iPhone starts to really hit that saturation point they'll have to fight harder to keep up this revenue stream. Their computer sales are just a small fraction of their income. They are iconic, but that's not what drives the traffic into their stores. They don't seem to keep up with the latest either. if you're so concerned about old, why do you want ufs? in any event, os x supports case preserving hfs+ (the way users expect a file system to work) or case sensitive (for those who want the additional hassles involved). it also supports ext4, fat16/32 and ntfs and is extensible so you can add whatever file system support you want. it's all fully documented, so start writing code.
