Anyone can Google top ten contributors to the Linux kernel and gain a better understanding. Essentially Intel is working on kernel support for the processors that have not even been announced yet. That's not to say Apple, being a large customer of Intel isn't also working on their own Kernel. But I doubt anyone would argue that Linux has a higher rate of change. It would have to. I am assuming it, but I feel like it is a very safe assumption. You have a huge pool of people contributing to it constantly and what they support is much more vast than what Apple is doing. You can Google the Mach kernel to gain some history on it. Read a little about the roots of BSD and AT&T Unix to gain some perspective on the age of the Mach kernel. Linux is not any harder than any other of the three main desktop operating systems to operate nowadays. It's different, but so is the Macintosh (which I personally hate but I used it enough to know that it's no better or worse) and so is Windows (with all its inherent flaws). They all have the same number of problems and advantages and disadvantages. It's a wash. I can tell you a dozen things I hate about Windows and Linux each, and probably a few things I hate about the Macintosh (that mouse drives me nuts, for example, and putting a file NOT in the default location is a pain, and simply printing to PDF is more steps than it needs to be and saving a duplicate is counter intuitive to me, and finding an app is an exercise in search land, and simply creating a decent "menu" (which is my preference) requires too much effort and the mouse has to travel forever to get to a window because the window menus aren't tied to the window you're working in, etc. But, knowing Linux and Windows better than I do the Macintosh, I can list even more problems for them. If I knew the Macintosh well enough to even begin to like it, then I'd be able to list a dozen gotchas, just like I can for my beloved bimmer and beemer. It's a wash nowadays. If all you talk to are Macintosh bigots, you'll get a badly skewed view of the desktop world. It would be as badly skewed if you only talked to Linux users, or to Windows users. It's only those of us who operate all three, who have a balanced view. But even we are tempered by our likes and dislikes (for example, I admit, I abhor the Apple operating systems in general, because they're far too restrictive overall, and they try to do too much for the user, like put files where I don't want them put). So, while I'm balanced, I'm also against all that Apple stands for by way of obstruction of the users' wants and needs.

I'll readily admit that I'm an Apple fan; my first computer (bought in October 1978) was an Apple ][. (I had wanted a Commodore PET, but no one anywhere near where I was living was selling any. It was the first personal computer I had ever seen demonstrated (by David Ahl, the editor of _Creative_ _Computing_ magazine). I looked at the TRS 80, and it was a joke. So I wound up buying an Apple ][, as I said. I was working at a franchised Apple dealership (we also sold the AT&T IBM clone) when the Mac came out, and I bought one at a greatly reduced price under the Own-A-Mac program for retailer salespeople. The GUI felt as if they had me in mind when they designed it. Anyway, this eventually led to me working as an SQA Test Engineer at Apple, and then Claris, followed by a few other companies including Intuit and Shutterfly until I decided to retire in 2001.

I then bought a Commodore VIC20 and a tape drive. That gave way to a Commodore 64 and a 1541 floppy drive, which made me very happy for a good while. I'd day at least 6 years of solid use. I then branched out into two directions. I got the first mac, which was I think $2,499. And I told myself it would be cool, and it was for a while, but ultimately the Amiga wowed me and I bought into that. Not unhappy at all. I bought every model they made, and I mean every one. Around 1991 or so I sold my Amiga 3000 built my first PC, which was a 286 and my sole desire was to run a terminal on it. On the Amiga I got into using UNIX remotely via modem and so I decided to go terminal only since that's I was doing anyway. I think bought a used Genea 64k VGA card and wanted to check out Windows. The card was garbage and so I wanted an Orchid ProDesigner II. I decided Windows looked pretty sharp so I went all in and built a 386 33 MHz with 4 MBs of RAM and a 40 MB HD. Dropped in a 1 MB Orchid PII and was quite blown away. By about 1994 I certified as a Novell Engineer and part of Novell training was learning a little UNIXware from the networking perspective. I ended up liking UNIX a lot and after certification in Novell, Lotus and Microcrap I got my chance to go through a 6 month program for Solaris administration. Hear about Linux and saw it in the office but didn't pay any attention to it all. Solaris was my dream and so I went that direction. I actually felt like it was old-thinking. Complained like crazy during Veritas Volume manager training. I switched to Solaris as my desktop, ran Netscape, Lotus Notes for groupware and StarOffice as my office suite. Star Devision, the publisher of StarOffice was sold to Sun Microsystems for $75 mill. It became Open Office, so I'm actually a very long time user. Of course Libre office is a fork of Open Office. So technically I've been using it for about 16 years. Now I left a lot of stuff out. I also bought an used 4 of the classic style Macs. A quadra, the G3, G4 and G5, plus quite a few of the intel based Macs. Still have a G3, G4, both collecting dust. The two G5s are still in operation. Two Xeon towers are used for encoding. I use the Adobe suite on a quad core i7 MacBook Pro. 16 GBs of RAM, 480 GB SSD from OWC. I also have an Air, which is not running OSX. It runs Fedora. PCs I built a ton of them. Both personally and professionally. Worked on Compaq Proliant servers for years; HPs too and yes Sun Micro. I didn't start using Linux until about 18 months ago, give or take. Linux became my personal desktop at that time. And honestly, it's not hard at all. In fact I tell everyone that I believe Linux is easier than Windows. And that's the honest truth. And that's coming from someone trained and certified on Windows, Novell, and Lotus, who worked on Windows day after day for more than a decade. And yet after a month or so on Linux honestly says it is easier. It is much easier. Personally I think all the nay says just don't use it for more than 5 seconds and run scared of it. If you can master one editor on Linux, and just a teeny tiny bit about the file system, you'd be surprised how the rest of it falls into place. No one wants to have a difficult experience. Linux simply isn't difficult. Don't know why so many think it is. It's freaking easy. Don't know what you're talking about. iTunes for Linux, perhaps? If
correct, I'm not at all for that. I don't care to see a single Apple
branded product on Linux. You can buy an MP3 on Amazon right now, but I
personally prefer to buy a CD and just encode it the way I want, which
is via Ogg Vorbis. I keep the CD as my backup and use that recode in any
future codec that might be interesting later. I can simply archive the
CD to an ISO if I just want to store it digitally or use a lossless
codec for now as my source for the future.
For movies, I still think a standard DVD is a good idea. They are pretty
cheap these days and on a modest quad core i5 3.0 GHz Linux box I have I
can encode that DVD to MKV at a rate between 335 to 445 frames per
second. I can transcode that DVD faster than I can download the Video
off Amazon. And since I own it, I can put in an unlimited number of
devices.
If I want to serve them up I can simply add Plex.
I have a Kindle Fire TV unit and can watch Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu,
plus buy or rent all the same movies Apple sells. I can buy CDs with RIP
from Amazon which give me both the physical CD and MP3 files in my
Amazon Music account. I use Rhythmbox for my music, script posted either
of how I sync to any device I have. I can even do it over LTE on the
internet. So I absolutely do not need Apple to manage music, videos or
anything of that nature. I have zero restrictions with my media. It's
mine, I own it and I am in control of it. Just a service I provided to
myself on the very same hardware used to sync my files. All of it cost
zero.

And that's exactly what many of us have done with iTunes since the year
2000, and other players such as SoundJam during the 90s.

Well, that's nospam. I say get rid of linux, replace your iOS devices with Android ones, or spend how much time as you can afford to find or create workarounds. I really don't care which of those options you choose. If you don't like, "Apple doesn't support linux; you are on your own," as an answer to your questions, then don't bother to ask them of us because that's the answer you'll keep getting.
