Oh, still haven't answered my task list to simply deal with three PDFs and a zip file on iOS. I see how all of you glossed over it. Lack of a file system is none-sense. Apple trying to re-invent and screwing it up as always. Like the one-button that Apple insisted on forever and is still forever wrong on. The world likes a two and three button mouse. One button doesn't cut it. And the lack of a file system is equally stupid. -- Marek Novotny https://github.com/marek-novotny

Actually I use Vim. Google it. I can use Vim via SSH and TMUX, you'll have to Google those too. So I can write, compile, and pretty much do everything I need to do on anything, from anywhere. My scripts use rsync, script code posted earlier, to sync my files to many machines. I could use DropBox. No need to though. I could create my own OwnCloud. No need to do that either. I could be on a jet or in a tunnel completely disconnected from the world and if I needed to, I could still restore my laptop in about all of 12 minutes or less from bare metal, even if the computer is completely different from my original. Oh and I didn't need Apple to write that for me. I wrote it myself. > on a mac, you basically just grab the phone or ipad and continue, with > the mac taking care of syncing/merging *for* you. iCloud huh. The same system Apple allowed a simple python script to brute force crack all those accounts. That's how their personal photos got hacked. Even though they told their iLame devices to delete photos, some got caught in the backups, and thus deleting them from the stream didn't remove them from the backups. Since iCloud allowed hackers to try password after password without warning all those star's personal photos, many coming from automated backups got stolen. Auto pilot for user data isn't a good idea. It's effortless, yes and that's the problem. When I sync, I choose what I am trusting to sync. >> Like the one-button that Apple insisted on forever and is >> still forever wrong on. Nope, only the retards at Apple think that's a good idea. Android had a file system on day one and still does. Let's see which Android feature Apple /borrows/ next, because even though they had a two year head start, Google blows them away when it comes to features. My bad, I should really rewrite it anyway. I posted it earlier, but
might not have forced it to all. I was saying it was too specific.
Most of the time I just sync to a thumb drive which is on my keychain.

Large files, such as Videos and things of that nature are mounted as NFS
shares, so they are not part of this. My NAS backs those up both via a
snapshot schedule for ZFS and though another script for out of NAS sync.
The array is 12 TB of usable space.
The largest directory in this sync is Music. But I could do up to 32 GBs
on my thumb drive. I try to keep it small for speed. It's around 4
Gigabytes of data plus the my choice of OS. Fedora, Ubuntu, rhel or
PCBSD.
There are three other scripts involved. One syncs just the configuration
files. Another creates the group names, adds me to them, creates
directories and assigns group permissions to them and so on. If I decide
to switch the OS on the laptop I'm using right now, I could install
other OS on top of it, and in just a few minutes I'd have everything
back, including my playcounts, photos with their event names, labels,
etc. Basically it would feel like the OS I use daily.
The big difference is that I'm not backing up the whole OS with data.
just the data separated from the OS so that I am free to switch from
rhel to fedora or ubuntu or even FreeBSD. It doesn't matter.

You can with the current versions of iOS and Mac OS X. Not like you're thinking, but yes. I have a VPS on the web, and I SSH into it, run a tmux session, and start vim. Now I do whatever I want to do. Change my script, split the window in half via tmux so I can program and do testing right next to it, whatever. Say I am working late and realize I have to go right now in 2 seconds. I just type C-b d and that tells tmux to detach the session. The session is still running, I'm just detached from it. Say I go home or say I am on some nice bus with a table. It really doesn't matter. I can ssh back into the vps and attach to the running session. Everything is just the way I left it, still running. I could for example, download or send some huge 50 GB image from point a to b. I actually do this one a few times a week. As that session is running, I can detach or add a session if I like and do more tasks. The thing is, it's always running on my tmux session on my vps. There is no corporation I am trusting with my data. This is my hardware, my session and my network. And by the way, it costs me zero in software licenses. All of this is completely open source and free. >> > on a mac, you basically just grab the phone or ipad and continue, with >> > the mac taking care of syncing/merging *for* you. >> >> iCloud huh. The same system Apple allowed a simple python script to >> brute force crack all those accounts. That's how their personal photos >> got hacked. > > Apple didn't allow that; those people used weak passwords. It would > have happened no matter what they were using. Sorry, but you're wrong. Apple's lame auto everything is a major part of this issue. If you don't see or understand that, that's your problem, but that is a fact. Another huge part of the problem is that Apple allowed the script to brute force try everything in a database or dictionary without shutting it down. After three attempts they should have shut it down, but no, Apple let a script brute force these users, trying thousands of potential codes. Apple also used really stupid two out of three right answers to allow resets. And the hackers could answer one, refresh and get better questions to make it easier to hack. Face the fact, Apple screwed these poor people up badly. I myself had an Apple employee clone my account internally, then buy about $17,000 worth of $200 gift cards until my bank finally stopped it. Took a month long investigation and bank transaction codes to figure it out because the cloned account changed to a false email so I didn't see the purchases. So who do I call about this? Service's are not Apple strong suit. Google is much more advanced. icloud is not a great idea as is. It needs improvement. Honestly, I'd rather host my data my way than rely on Apple. If you one day decide you're not happy with Apple, then what? you're locked in. Me, I can use a mac, Windows, Linux or BSD and my data will always be accessible. Argue those facts if you like. My way is better. Yours might be easy as long as you remain an Apple customer, but it is really a form of lockin and you're paying for it. No thanks. I like my method. >> > oh the mouse argument. how lame. macs have supported multiple buttons >> > and contextual menus since 1986 or so. >> >> I didn't say otherwise. You don't have to type it all by using the bash history. Just hit the up-arrow once or twice. I know you already know this. It was directed to the OP. -- <Wildman> GNU/Linux user #557453 The cow died so I don't need your bull!

This has been covered numerous times, but here it is again with small words and a real-world example so that maybe you can figure it out. When taking pictures at Yellowstone National Park the photos from my phone appeared on my iPad despite my having no cell phone coverage and no wifi access. Since both devices have BT and Wifi, they can see each other, establish a connection, and transfer the photos WITHOUT a network connection. Now, which words confused you, dipshit? > How long do you think it takes for me to type, usync.sh? I assure you, > it's less then one second. Because like the typical Linux Dweeb you don't count the time it took to write usync.sh because your time is worthless. -- If there's a bustle in your hedgerow don't be alarmed now.
