If you claim that the sun will come again tomorrow,
believing that without verifying it myself wont get

The editor's note at the end suggests the NYT really wish they hadn't
published that article...

Article does distinguish between cell frequencies/power and bluetooth
used by the watch.

Of course, no link to disease and cell phone use has ever been found
(other than driving and using a phone... hands free or not ... let me
mention an idiot on the road I encountered this evening some time).

As to battery "power"? Really?

No link between disease and power lines has ever been proven. Yes,
there are statistical clusters of some cancers near power lines, but the
'cause' has never been found.

Batteries are DC, of course. Power lines are AC. And massively more
powerful...

Ah well, I'm happy the above article has provided laughs, at least.

Nope. One speculative unsourced piece of crap mentioned it with no
sourcing whatsoever and someone copied that speculative piece of crap.

See above.

But what apple can do is provide the bank with the information
about the individual adding the card that is cheap for the bank
to use to check that it is the card holder.

You don't know that, or that they have always done that.

Even the last 4 digits of the phone number isn't necessarily
that useful to the bank when deciding if card is being added
to applepay by the owner of the card.

Not necessarily. Based on ONLY the above information, it is possible the
banks were naive and didn't request any additional information and
accepted card activation with just card number, name and expiration. It
is also possible banks wanted more info and Apple refused.

We can't know for sure. But based on Apple's "DNA", it seems to ME that
Apple wanted to keep the process super simple and may have balked at
adding extra steps in activating a card on ApplePay.

Yes, necessarily. As you correctly pointed out previously,
the apple pay system makes it MUCH easier to do fraud,
essentially because there is no longer any necessity to
produce a physical copy of the card that is good enough
to fool a machine or a human anymore. ALL you need is
the card details and an iDevice to put them into.

Its hardly surprising that even the stupidest thief
has been told about that by other thieves now.

They obviously got more than that, at least the time and
date of the attempt to add the card to apple pay etc.

We can actually, someone must know.

Yes.

They clearly did, and were right to do that given that
the banks are free to notify the card holder that the
card has been added to apple pay so that the card
holder can report that fraud when it has happened.

Clearly it is worth providing more information to the
banks too, particularly information that can be used
in an automated process to add more security to the
registration process cheaply.

AFAIK, which is rather more than what is in the papers, your second paragraph
is close to it.

Nope. The cards in question have already been stolen, but were not
deactivated by banks. The banks already worked with Apple to handle such
cards by categorizing them as "Yellow Path". For Yellow Path accounts,
the banks (not Apple) are responsible for contacting their customers to
work out any discrepancies and ask for more personal information. Some
banks did this well and have very low fraud rates with Apple Pay, while
other banks fell flat and have high fraud rates due to their failure to
properly identify the people attempting to provision those accounts.
