Is there any software that allows one to make an image backup of an ipad, so you can restore the image to go back to a previous state of the ipad? I've tried the backup option in itunes, but it's rubbish and with a 3rd party app like itools, it doesn't seem possible to make a complete and reliable backup of the system (ios) and all installed apps in a single image file. Previously I've found out that Apple has a totally fascistic update policy where they offer no freedom or flexibility whatsoever. So when you have say, ios 6 and you decide to try ios 7, then apple no longer allows you to go back to the situation where you had ios 6. I really hate that, because things are working reasonably well now with ios 7, but I'd still like to try ios 8.

The issue for me is that I use a jailbroken ipad and I rely on apps from torrent sites and this means there is a bit of extra delay before the new version of an app becomes available there. So a jailbroken app that works ok on ios 7 might cause issues with ios 8. Specifically, I've seen there are updates for photoshop touch that fix a specific issue with ios 8. So, I want the flexibility to try out ios 8 while retaining the option to go back to ios 7 if it turns out that certain favorite apps tend to work better under ios 7.

It doesn't. At the start of this thread I've clearly stated that I was interested in making a backup of the COMPLETE state of the ipad. The first thing I did when I bought it was making a backup with itunes. At that point the ipad had ios 6.x installed. Since itunes claimed it made a complete backup of my ipad, I assumed it had captured the complete state of the device. Then I installed the update and I went to ios 7.x and after a while I decided I wanted to jailbreak the device to enable more features. I found out there was no jailbreak yet, but I thought, no problem, I'll just restore the backup, because there was a jailbreak for ios 6.x. Then I found out that the itunes backup isn't really a complete backup of the software on the device, because the device did not go back to ios 6.x after restoring the backup. Well, they can, but it's quite complicated because they have to save certain information in advance which will allow them to hack their way back to a previous ios version. If they forget to save that information in advance, there is no way to hack back to a previous ios version, so in that respect apple clearly doesn't think people should have the freedom to go back to a previous ios version. There was a very subtle issue with a wacom intuos creative 2 stylus I was experiencing and I was thinking I should update to ios 8 to see if that might resolve the issue. But fortunately I decided to experiment a bit more and it turned out that the issue (skipping lines) only occurs when I have the ipad connected to the power cable. The weird thing is that I also have the wacom intuos creative stylus, and that one doesn't suffer from that subtle issue. I was worried perhaps the stylus was broken, but I think that's unlikely now it turns out that the issue with skipping lines can easily be resolved by unplugging the ipad during use.
