Interesting. Yeah, I never get paid apps. Just free apps.

"This is what metaphor is. It is not saying that an ant is an elephant.
Perhaps; both are alive. No. Metaphor is saying the ant is an elephant.
Now, logically speaking, I know there is a difference. If you put
elephants and ants before me, I believe that every time I will correctly
identify the elephant and the ant. So metaphor must come from a very
different place than that of the logical, intelligent mind. It comes
from a place that is very courageous, willing to step out of our
preconceived ways of seeing things and open so large that it can see the
oneness in an ant and in an elephant." --Natalie Goldberg

Thanks for that interesting tidbit. So, free apps, under certain circumstances, do get a receipt. Interesting. It still won't work in the situation here; but it's nice to know. Thanks.

I read every single post when it was posted, and none said how to get the date using the equipment and software we had at hand. Anyway, it's a done deal. It can't be gotten. Period. Note: I have the date of *everything* I've installed on all my platforms, but, that's because of have aliases which allow me to easily keep a log file, with every entry time stamped, so, I know the date of every app I've installed and uninstalled on iOS. She knows that I know, so she logically assumed iOS can do that - but I did it all on Linux, where it's *trivial* to log things such as the date an app was installed. Android has no problem with it either, by the way, so, it was *assumed* that you can get the date of installation from the iPad itself. But you can't.

Please show me where, in this entire thread, those "two ways" were given that will actually work for free apps when there is clearly no iTunes involved (which is the case)... I do readily state that multiple (useless) ways were given, but none of them work, nor could they possibly work. While I appreciate the ideas, what I can't appreciate is that you argue repeatedly that I ignore your "two ways", when neither of those two ways could possibly work, and you knew that - yet you persist in saying I was given two ways (I can propose a hundred ways which can't possibly work!). In order of how the thread shows up in my newsreader: 3/2 Sunshine: original question (how to get the actual date installed, not updated) 3/12 Jolly Roger: no answer - just asks why 3/12 Jolly Roger: view the last update (which was already known and is the wrong answer) 3/12 nospam: usually the date you downloaded it. (which is what the question essentially was) 3/12 Sunshine: asks nospam to clarify how to get that date 3/12 Jolly Roger: rudely says he gave the answer & won't repeat (but he gave no such answer) 3/12 Sunshine: nicely asks Jolly Roger to clarify (even knowing JR has never known anything) 3/13 Jolly Roger: agrees he never gave the answer & asks why anyone would want the date 3/12 M John Matlaw: explains to JR that JR's answer wasn't an answer "in all fairness" 3/12 M John Matlaw: kindly describes the best you can get is the last update date 3/12 nospam: explains to MJM that his answer was the last update date (which MJM knew already) 3/13 Sunshine: explains the last update wasn't ever the goal (& that iTunes/App Store failed) 3/12 Jolly Roger: asks why the install date is desired 3/12 nospam: give an incorrect answer to use "iTunes" (which was already explained it fails) 3/12 nospam: also says to check email receipts (of which there are absolutely none, and he knew that) 3/13 Sunshine: patiently explains why the App Store and iTunes didn't give the desired information 3/13 nospam: characteristically says "you're not paying attention" 3/13 Jolly Roger: provides wholly unrelated information about Mac and it's wrong anyway 3/13 nospam: talks about buying and syncing apps, which is, again, wholly unrelated (and won't work) 3/13 Jolly Roger: complains again about not knowing why someone wants to know the install date 3/13 Sunshine: again, as usual, politely explains the reason for the question 3/13 bj: provides a suggestion to just delete the app (which isn't an answer to the original question) 3/13 nospam: makes a wholly incorrect negative judgement about app organization 3/13 Sunshine: kindly and politely clarifies that she lets the iOS device store the apps where they may 3/13 nospam: replies "good" 3/14 Sunshine: kindly provides even more information about why she wants to know the install date 3/14 nospam: says I "ignore the answer and start bitchin" (ummmm... there was never an answer) 3/14 nospam: says I "she can look through the purchase history" (ummm.... they're all free apps) 3/14 Lewis: says the same idiotic things that Jolly Roger says (they must be conjoined illiterate twins) 3/14 Sunshine: kindly and politely says there was never an answer to the original question 3/14 nospam: Says two answers were given and ignored (when zero usable answers were given) 3/14 Jolly Roger: Says "don't worry" about the date (as if that's somehow an answer to the question) 3/14 Sunshine: Yet again kindly and politely responds to the question of why 3/14 nospam: Yet again, tries to say that a scared old lady shouldn't be that way (but she is) 3/14 Sunshine: Yet again clarifies that the original question is still about finding the install date 3/14 nospam: Says the question doesn't matter as his way of doing things is the only way that's right 3/14 Patty Winter: Goes off on some strange tangent that has nothing to do with the question 3/14 Sunshine: Yet again, kindly and politely responds to Patty Winter's concerns 3/14 nospam: Says I reject the answers (huh? There were NEVER any correct answers!) 3/14 Sunshine: for the first time, gets frustrated (reminds nospam of the kettle calling the pot black) 3/14 nospam: Wants so badly to start a flamefest, says I was given answers (huh?) and I reject them 3/14 Sunshine: Kindly again explains to Patty Winter why a grandmother wants to know a date of install 3/14 Patty Winter: Assails Sunshine (and doesn't at all attempt to answer the basic question) 3/13 nospam: Asks again why the date of install matters 3/13 Lewis: Not really important what Lewis says, but he says she should just delete the apps 3/13 Lewis: Says something meaningless about buying iPads and CDs 3/13 Lewis: Surprisingly, offers real information about a "Purchase date" (which doesn't exist) 3/14 Lewis: Surprisingly, offers real information about a "Purchase date" (which doesn't exist) 3/14 Sunshine: Explains to Lewis that this helpful advice can't possibly work for all free apps

You even mentioned that yourself. That leaves one method you mentioned eariler in the thread: iTunes on a Mac or PC. > > With no desktop iTunes involved? > > stupid restriction, which you only just mentioned, but at least one way > does not. Yes it is a stupid restriction that the full purchase history is only easily available via the iTunes application on a Mac or Windows PC. An increasing number of people may have an iPad (or iPhone) as their only computing device. It is not reasonable to expect them to have to find someone they trust with iTunes installed on their computer (or willing to install it) so they can temporarily log in to their account. There is another method for recent purchases, which is accessible from an iPhone or iPad: http://reportaproblem.apple.com This gives the last 90 days of purchaes (including free items). For older items, there is a link at the bottom of that page to contact App Store support. This article also lists the various methods: https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT204088 -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

I assume he's talking about the purchaseDate key in the file iTunesMetadata.plist, which is at the top level of the app bundle. It identifies when that app was purchased from App Store. On a computer, accessing this would be a matter of unzipping the .ipa file and looking at the iTunesMetadata.plist file with software which can decode the binary property list format. Reasonably easy on a Mac, not so easy on a PC (which would probably need iTunes installed to get a copy of the .ipa file in the first place, unless that can be achieved via jailbreaking), impossible to do directly on an iPad. All of nospam's suggestions are useless to someone who doesn't have easy access to iTunes on a Mac or Windows PC, and wants to find their purchase history for free apps. The only method I know of so far which works solely on an iPad is http://reportaproblem.apple.com and that only covers the last 90 days. Anything older appears to require contacting Apple Support. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

That is not true at all. The full purchase history showing every application you've ever bought is in the App Store application on both iPhones and iPads under the "Purchased" header. The apps are listed in the order you purchased them. -- http://2blog.kreme.com If it wasn't for the pirates, I bet Star Wars: Ep III would have mad $50 million its first DAY!
