she *can't* delete the wrong thing. period.

there is no way to break an ipad by deleting apps.

how would knowing the date change that?

actually, you can't wipe out the entire operating system without
explicit intent an insane amount of effort.

She wants to know the date. Period.

I don't care about the date I installed something.

You don't care about the date either.
But she cares.

Otherwise she wouldn't have asked me.

that doesn't answer the question.

the answer is that it makes no difference whatsoever.

if she wants to delete an app, delete it. nothing is going to break.
she can't break anything even if she tried.

if you actually wanted to help her, you'd tell her that the date
doesn't matter and nothing is going to break. but you won't. instead,
you just want to argue.

The way to approach this is to gently inform her that there's no need
to know when an app has been installed, and that if she deletes an app
that she doesn't use, she's not going to break anything.

I think you missed what happened, Michelle.

1. She talks to me on the phone about things on iOS.
2. One of them is how to tell the date a free app was installed.
3. Since I never cared about it, I looked and couldn't find it.
4. I asked, and the answer is no (someone needs to tell Lewis & JR the truth)
5. I tell her no.

That's it. The end.
There's no need for me to tell her anything.
She can't do what she wanted to do. Period.

We move on.

You don't bother to tell her why she can't do it, nor why there's no
need to do it?

I'm not going to complicate her life.

She asked how to do it while we were on the phone and I figured it would
be trivially easy but then I could only get the last updated date on my
iPad.

So I told her I'd check (as I often do), and I checked the web and still
couldn't get anything more than the last time updated (which is not what
she asked for); so, as a last resort, I asked YOU.

The answer came back that those with iTunes can get receipts (that's
not the case here); and that those who paid for them can get receipts
(again, that's not the situation here); and even that those who
simultaneously pay for apps and download free apps apparently get
receipts (that's not the situation here either).

So, I told her it can't be done. She was disappointed, but I've explained
to her it's the Apple way (she has read the Jobs biography, so she understood
right away) or the highway in this situation.

She *still* loves the Apple products though, so, she's undaunted.
Disappointed. But undaunted.

So instead of giving her a meaningful explanation, you gave her that

Huh? I gave her the truthful answer to the question.

Q: Can she find out the date the apps were installed on her iOS device?
A: No.

That's the truth. And you know it.

Nice creative editing; you (deliberately?) omitted the "Apple way or
highway" BS you told her from the quote.

Absolutely true, and totally useless, just like Microsoft's support:

There was a pilot flying a small charter plane, with several very
important executives on board.  As they approached the Seattle airport
through thick fog with less than 10 miles visibility when his
instruments went out. So, he began circling around looking for a
landmark. After some time he started running low on fuel and the
passengers were getting anxious.

Finally, a small opening in the fog appeared and the pilot saw a tall
building with one guy working alone on the top floor. The pilot banked
the plane around, opened the window and shouted to the guy, "Hey where
am I?"

The office worker replied, "You're in a plane."

The pilot closed the window, executed a 275 degree turn executed a
perfect blind landing on the runway 5 miles away.  Just as the plane
came to a halt, so did the engine as the fuel ran out.

The passengers were amazed and one asked how he did it.

"Simple," replied the pilot, "I asked the guy in that building a simple
question. The answer he gave me was 100 percent correct but absolutely
useless, therefore that must be Microsoft's support office and from
there the airport is just five miles due East."

Telling her lies leading her to believe that she cannot delete apps for
fear of somehow screwing something up when she could simply delete them
and download them later if needed is complicating her fucking life, you
complete jerk. If I had someone like you in my family, I would find it
*extremely* hard to like you and I'd actively protect the rest of my
family from your form of mental abuse.

Wrong. If you delete an app and want it back, you go to the App Store
and download it again. It's the same for all iOS users.

Don't change the subject. We are talking about apps from the App Store
here.

The problem here is our mcro-managing megalomaniac, who teaches
everybody in his family to use iOS devices th way he thinks they should
be used, when he doesn't have a clue as to how they should be used.

His "aunt" if she exists, is in deep trouble if she depends on "he of
the shifting nym" for advixe & help with iOS devices.

Remember this is the guy who had to have his arm twisted to buy an
iTunes gift card so he could buy an app he was trying to avoid because
it wasn't free. Hell he won't let his wife update iOS on her iPad
because that will interfere with his Linux only setup.

Yup! My 92 year old father has no issues problem solving OSX & iOS issues.

As he will continue to do. It will be the same when he nymshifts again,
and reappears with another inane query and ignores advice once more
bcause it does not fit his model.

"no workaround" that seems to be a key concept to all of the various
personna he uses; Adair, Liam OConnor, Alphonse A, Vinny P, Juan Camilo
Blanco, and now Sunshine.

...and there it is. An astute character analysis.

3/13 nospam: replies "good"
3/14 Sunshine: kindly provides even more information about why she wants to know the install date
3/14 nospam: says I "ignore the answer and start bitchin" (ummmm... there was never an answer)
3/14 nospam: says I "she can look through the purchase history" (ummm.... they're all free apps)
3/14 Lewis: says the same idiotic things that Jolly Roger says (they must be conjoined illiterate twins)
3/14 Sunshine: kindly and politely says there was never an answer to the original question
3/14 nospam: Says two answers were given and ignored (when zero usable answers were given)
3/14 Jolly Roger: Says "don't worry" about the date (as if that's somehow an answer to the question)
3/14 Sunshine: Yet again kindly and politely responds to the question of why
3/14 nospam: Yet again, tries to say that a scared old lady shouldn't be that way (but she is)
3/14 Sunshine: Yet again clarifies that the original question is still about finding the install date
3/14 nospam: Says the question doesn't matter as his way of doing things is the only way that's right
3/14 Patty Winter: Goes off on some strange tangent that has nothing to do with the question
3/14 Sunshine: Yet again, kindly and politely responds to Patty Winter's concerns
3/14 nospam: Says I reject the answers (huh? There were NEVER any correct answers!)
3/14 Sunshine: for the first time, gets frustrated (reminds nospam of the kettle calling the pot black)
3/14 nospam: Wants so badly to start a flamefest, says I was given answers (huh?) and I reject them
3/14 Sunshine: Kindly again explains to Patty Winter why a grandmother wants to know a date of install
3/14 Patty Winter: Assails Sunshine (and doesn't at all attempt to answer the basic question)
3/13 nospam: Asks again why the date of install matters
3/13 Lewis: Not really important what Lewis says, but he says she should just delete the apps
3/13 Lewis: Says something meaningless about buying iPads and CDs
3/13 Lewis: Surprisingly, offers real information about a "Purchase date" (which doesn't exist)
3/14 Lewis: Surprisingly, offers real information about a "Purchase date" (which doesn't exist)
3/14 Sunshine: Explains to Lewis that this helpful advice can't possibly work for all free apps

The answer is simple. It can't be done. There are no iTunes or email receipts.
All further posts are merely flame troll rants by (only) some of the above,

Speaking of receipts, I don't get them all the time for free iOS stuff.
Is that normal? I do get them with redeemed codes though.

free apps haven't generated receipts in years.
