I did buy quite a few iPad apps int he year or so before I bought an
iPad. I knew I was going to get one eventually, so I bought some apps as
they went on sale. But that's not at all usual.

(I bought CDs long before I owned a CD player too)

I'm helping someone who is trying to clean up her iOS device,
and who is wary of deleting things. She asked me how to tell when
it was installed, presumably because the older ones were installed
with her son's advice while the newer ones were installed on her
initiative or on my advice.

She just asked how to get the date, and I couldn't figure out
how. Without macs, we can't figure out when so that's a datapoint
which is not available to us. We can only figure out the last
update, which is useless for her purpose.

why would the date matter?

have her delete the apps she doesn't want. done.

if she changes her mind, the apps can be redownloaded at any time for
no cost. keep in mind a free app can always become a paid app but you
still get it for free.

why make things more complicated than they need to be?

a mac is not required and the answer was given already. you aren't
paying attention.

See? That would nhave been useful information. There is no reason to not
delete any apps she doesn't want since she can redownload them any time
she wants. Regardless of who recommended them, if she doesn't use them
she should delete them.

If she's using the app, keep it.
If not using it, but it has some data she may want to keep, export, backup,
or somehow transfer the data & delete the app.
Deleting the app doesn't mean you can't reinstall it if you miss it after
all.

Just because her son, some famous guru, or you, recommended it doesn't mean
it does anything for her in actual use.
If she's reluctant to delete an app "just because", put it in a folder on
the last Home Page out of the way.

you're forgetting that this person insists that apps must be in the
proper predesignated folder which are entirely on one page. there is no
'last page'.

She has plenty of pages as she just lets the apps go where they go.

She's an octogenarian who loves Apple equipment after being thoroughly
confused for years by all the PCs we bought her over the years, starting
with one of the early windows operating systems.

She doesn't even use her PC anymore. She thinks the iPad has changed
her life. So that's good.

She never could find a file on the PC, even if she received it in the
mail just moments before. But, for some strange reason, she can
find more things on Apple equipment; but, she still lets the computer
do whatever it wants so she's fearfully afraid of deleting things,
mostly for fear it will be something she needed.

So she keeps everything. And it's a mess.

So, she aks *me* how to do stuff, and when I ask you for help, the
answer usually (but not always) is that it can't be done.

Maybe I misunderstood the answer here, but, as far as I can tell,
with her not having any other equipment but the iOS devices, it
can't be done for her to tell what date she downloaded it.

I usually wait a few days when I ask you guys the question, so, I
just told her the answer and she was disappointed. But we move on.

What you should tell her is that she doesn't need to worry about the
date it was installed. If she doesn't need the app, she can delete it.
She can always re-install it later easily from the App Store. I'm pretty
sure nospam or someone else already stated this.

I saw that, and I knew that, and in fact, I told her that before she
even asked me about the date.

Her problem is that she's afraid of deleting the wrong thing. She
can't recover from an erroneous deletion like you or I can.

Heck, you or I can wipe out the entire operating system and it wouldn't
be cause for concern.

So, you have to remember she's even older than Michelle and not
at all able like you or I am to recover from a mistake.

So, all she wanted to know was how to figure out WHEN she installed
something. Turns out, it can't be done. And that's that, like so many
things on this equipment. There is no workaround.

Anyway, unless it can be done, this particular question has found
its answer from those who know the answers. And that's good.

Easily. But I don't bother. Clearly.

Nope. Nospam knows every time (well, actually about half the

It's for the bots. The mass accumulators. Those that will tie in
the metadata details of all your posts, more cleverly than
GG does, as you noted already (GG is pretty lame).

The main way to avoid the metadata vacuum is to change the
meta data. It's a well calculated technical process, and, if
you find a flaw in it, let me know, because you're *not* making
this association by the meta data!

You're making that claim based purely on social cues.

Of course, they *could* do the social mining, which you just
did; but, if I were worried about that, I'd easily change syntax
and a myriad of details and I'd use horrid punctuation and various
cultures' vernacular, etc., but I'm not about to go to *that*
much trouble just to avoid the automated meta-data vacuums.

BTW ... it's never to avoid the killfile, as anyone is welcome
to plonk me (I wish JR would figure this out sooner though).

There's no need to killfile me, because all my threads ask
reasonable questions and, for the most part, I avoid the
off-topic tangents (e.g., between nospam & Rod Speed).

You will note that any of my threads are reasonable, and most
have no answer, merely because I have usually already tried to
find the answer - and it wasn't forthcoming on the web.

For example, you can't record on the iPad, and you can't
find out the date the app was installed, and you can't even
get useful WiFi statistics; but, you *can* get a half decent
breadcrumbing app (only if you pay for it) yet some of them
stink to high even (even if you do pay for them).

Perhaps the best thing I learned was that the iOS lovers are
a loyal bunch, who care a lot about their "brand", of which
you are apparently one. They don't like to hear about any
deficiencies in iOS, for the most part, and they make up
excuses for its deficiencies - which is a true testament to
its brand loyalty which I admire.

This loyalty hampers their thought processes though, as they
most often feel that there's no need for things, such as a
simply copy over wire or a simple shortcut to a document on
the desktop or a simple access to a single desktop of apps,
or even a simple way to organize apps.

This brand loyalty has its limits of course, as they can't
even fathom how powerful a launcher can be, since they're
perfectly content with the one and only launcher that iOS
provides. They can't even conceive of a need for a simple
wire transfer of a single file, because they're so comfortable
with the iTunes model (of which, the less I state, the better).

However, to your (plural) credit, many of the problem sets
that I proposed, which I had thought had no answer from the
beginning (else, I would have found the answer myself),
actually *had* either an answer (such as totally free USA
phone calls to and from the iPad without need of a cellular
payment) or they had a viable workaround, such as editing arrows
using Preview, neither of which I would have learned without
the astute help from this (very) loyal brand of iOS lovers.

So, kudos to the iOS intelligentsia, for the advancement of the
capabilities of iOS-based products and their associated apps
(and for figuring me out, but that isn't hard to figure out).

bullshit. you might *start* asking a reasonable question but you reject
all answers, which is when it derails into a flamefest.

Wow. There's a kettle calling the pot black.
What is it that you do with Rod Speed all the time?

To be clear, I don't participate in flamefests.
There's no value in a flamefest.

All I want is the answer to the question.
1. I search for an answer on the web.
2. If I don't find the answer, I ask a question.
3. There is either an answer of yes or no regarding that question.
4. I test out all reasonable suggestions and report back.
5. I generally explain why unreasonable suggestions are unreasonable,
   from my standpoint.
6. That's what you're probably calling a "flamefest".
7. The minute it gets unproductive, I bow out.

In summary, the only thing I do, that you might consider a "flamefest",
is that I respond to most people, even when they're *not* responding
to the original topic.

Like this response.
But that's not a flamefest; that's just being courteous and respectful.

maybe in your fantasy it is, but the reality is more like this:

1. you search for the wrong search terms and get bad results
2. you ask a question
3. it's answered
4. you reject the answer because it doesn't fit your way of doing
things even though it's very easy, sometimes even automatic.
5. you come up with some new way of doing it vastly more complicated
6. you then bash apple because to do what you want is so hard, never
realizing that it's only hard because you made it hard. easier methods
exist but you refuse them.

Bingo.

BTW, "Sunshine", changing your name once a week virtually ensures that
anyone who has killed your posts under your old name will see your new
posts under your new name. Filtering with other criteria risks false
positives. After a while, keeping up with all of your name changes is
frankly more trouble than you are worth. Don't whine that people here
keep responding to your asinine posts when you actively avoid their
filters. You can shove that complaint right up your own ass as far as I
care.

Oh, we care about deficiencies, we care more than Apple-haters do. But
we don't care much for irrelevant ones, and don't care at all for
imaginary or fabricated ones. You seem to relish in the irrelevant,
fabricated, and imaginary ones.

You just answered your own question: he's a coward.
