Static or video? Static: just press the Home and Power buttons
simultaneously.

I grab things that way constantly. You can even get a screen shot from a
video clip.

I use ffmpeg on the pc to convert any video to screenshots but I don't want
a screenshot. A screenshot wouldn't be helpful at all.

All I want is to make a video of what I'm doing on the device so I can
send it to someone so that they can follow along.

I'm sorry. I meant video.

I want to help someone far away and just record what I'm doing
on the screen and record my voice and what the app is spaeking
as I'm using the app.

Then I want to send them the video so that they can follow
on their own.

The simplest way might be to use another (video) camera to follow the
action. Phone, or P&S or DSLR even.

I can't see it here in m.p.m.i., and couldn't find it either in c.m.i.
Could you be so kind to post the instructions here (again), I would be
quite interested in them.

Then your only option is to jailbreak to get an unauthorized screen
recording app (not recommended), or get a Mac.

Thanks, that's an interesting (while somewhat limited, i.e. due to the
device and release limitations David Empson mentioned) approach I wasn't
aware of. :-)

Here are the instructions he posted but it won't work for me because
I don't have a Mac.

----

> Is there a way to log into a remote iOS device

I haven't seen Apple approve any iOS applications that do such a thing,
probably due to security concerns.

If you and your friend both have Macs, you could try this:

Tell your friend to:

1. Connect the iOS device to their Mac with a USB cable.
2. Open /Applications/QuickTime Player.
3. From the menu bar, choose File > New Movie Recording.
4. Click the small arrow next to the red record button in the middle of
the bottom of the window, and choose the iOS device from the resulting
camera source menu.

Your friend should see the display of their iOS device being mirrored to
the Mac display in a QuickTime recording window.

Now you can both run /Applications/Messages and establish a chat
session. Then your friend can choose Buddies > Share My Screen to share
their screen with you. If all goes well, you'll be able to see their
interactions with the iOS device in the QuickTime recording window on
their screen.

I haven't checked in years, but there used to be QuickTime for Windoze
... whether that still exists and allows the same recording option is a
different question.

The quick 'n' dirty way is to simply have someone else use another
phone / camera to film you using your one. That video can then be
shared in some form.

QuickTime for Windows does still exist, but I doubt it supports iOS
screen recording, because that feature is part of QuickTime X on the
Mac, not the older QuickTime 7, and the Windows version is QuickTime 7.

To use QuickTime screen recording:

The iOS device must be running iOS 8 or later, and it needs to be
connected to the Mac using a lightning cable. The screen recording
feature is not supported on older models with the 30-pin dock connector,
which rules out the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3, even though they can
run iOS 8.

The Mac must be running OS X Yosemite (10.10) or later.

One of the main reasons this feature exists is for iOS developers to
capture a video of their app running, which can be included in the App
Store listing as a simple method of demoing the app. Since a Mac is
officially required for iOS development, Apple only needs to support
this feature on the Mac, at least as far as this usage is concerned.

> The quick 'n' dirty way is to simply have someone else use another
> phone / camera to film you using your one. That video can then be
> shared in some form.

Another potential solution: use AirPlay video output in mirroring mode
from the iOS device, to software running on a computer which is acting
as an AirPlay server and can capture the video. A Google search on "iOS
screen recording Windows" gives at least one such option as the top hit.

The AirPlay method isn't a complete solution, because it depends on
whether the app you are recording recognises an external display and
uses it to display something different from the built-in display.

For example, in Keynote while a presentation is playing, the built-in
display lets you control the presentation while the external display
shows the presentation. This method would capture the presentation
(external) rather than the control user interface (internal).

Technical detail of interest: if there is an AirPlay destination
available, then while the QuickTime screen recording method is being
used, you can see the AirPlay output selector in the iOS Control Centre,
and it shows the currently selected output is "System Capture". It isn't
possible to have AirPlay video output going at the same time as
QuickTime screen capture.

That implies the screen capture is using the same underlying mechanism

Thinking about it afterwards, the "quick 'n' dirty" method is in some
