You're just not used to someone who, not only has a strong
opinion (like nospam or Rod Speed, for example), but, who can
also change his mind when shown a clearly better way.

You were clearly shown a better way days and days ago. You didn't
change your mind until you were beaten with a clue by four.

Hi Michelle,
I'm gonna be very nice with you.

I'm not sure what advice you offered in this thread, but, a
variety of people offered the following advice:

- The gmail app couldn't do it (this was wrong advice)
- The gmail app could only do it by saving to a drive (partly wrong)
- I came up with the solution of the temporary save (dempson explained it)
- The apple app just worked (I changed my apple mail account to take advantage)
- The latest gmail app just works (I downloaded the latest gmail app & confirmed)

Given these facts, what exactly are you saying I didn't change until
"beaten" by a two by four?

I said that, and it was not wrong.

I said that as well.

Irrelevant because it happened after the fact.

> Given these facts, what exactly are you saying I didn't change until

I wrote *clue* by four, not "two" by four.

The fact is that JR, Empson, nospam, and Speed (among others) told you
that the Gmail app can't do it, and the Apple mail app can. You kept
resisting using Apple's mail app, and kept beating your head against
the wall until you found a horrific workaround. But that workaround
doesn't prove that (the previous version of) the gmail app can do it.
So yes, it took a clue by four to get you to see what you had been told
days, if not a week or more, earlier.

Not only that, but he claimed Apple Mail was useless multiple times. He
seems to follow a pattern of claiming anything he doesn't understand to
be pointless, useless, toys, and so on.

The mount of time wasted by people like him is just amazing. Personally,
I value my time enough that I'm not interested in spinning in circles
for a week when better alternatives are readily available.

It would be best if you put me back on killfile.
It's so easy to do. Takes less time than for me to write this.

And you offered what advice in this thread?

At least David Empson offered reasons why the Gmail app needed to
have the various workarounds, and he found that the latest Gmail
app works just like the Apple Mail app did.

What advice did 'you' offer?

My feelings have little to do with it. You were told by multiple people
that you could check GMail in Apple Mail but ignored it and held onto
your "strong opinion" based on willful ignorance while declaring that
Apple Mail was useless, just as you do with other things. It seems to be
your default position that things you do not use or understand are
useless or toys - despite others who know better telling you otherwise.
And you seem to hold that position indefinitely even as multiple people
hammer it into your head that you are wrong.

I'll say as nicely as I can, that, while Rod Speed and nospam

You clearly don't know me, and the results you get here have little to

What people told me was wrong, but, that's OK.
They didn't know the answer, and neither did I.
I only found the answer by plugging away, testing various approaches.

Once I had the answer, David Empson kindly explained WHY it was

This is what you see when viewing the docx in the default (Apple) Mail
app (with my annotation), once you touch the header area:

And, after you touch the icon, this is what you see:

Touching, say, Word duly takes you into Word with the comments
visible.

Hi Recliner,
I'm just getting back to this, as I'm trying to help someone else,
and I was pre-occupied with the other issues.

As a test of what you showed, I set up the iPad to use my Gmail
as the blue apple envelope Mail (which was useless until now),
and it did exactly what you would expect it to.

When I opened the DOCX file on the iPad in "Mail", it gave
the choice of Word or Pages (as it should):
 http://i57.tinypic.com/2emzbd4.png

When opened in Word on the iPad, the comments showed up correctly:
 http://i59.tinypic.com/2h6df2t.png

When opened in Pages, the way comments showed up was colorfully
funky, and unexpected, but usable (if less efficient):
 http://i58.tinypic.com/1ywupc.png

But Word could be induced to do something similar as Pages:
 http://i60.tinypic.com/fu3knd.png

I still haven't figured out yet how to get the Gmail app on the
iPad to bring up either Word or Pages, and, when I save the
document, I have absolutely no idea where it goes on the iPad!

I'm gonna say this quite nicely, but I had you blocked on the
other threads, not because I don't like you ... but because you
had never offered any positive advice whatsoever.

Recliner offered helpful advice.
Rod Speed offers useful advice.
Nospam offers reasonable advice.
Lewis offers ideas.
etc.

I don't think you have *ever* offered *any* advice that wasn't
a dig. So, while I don't have you killfiled on this thread, I
would like for you to consider offering advice to resolve the
stated problem.

The stated problem isn't even "my" problem; I'm trying to help
someone else, but I can clearly replicate the problem on my iPad.

1. The Apple Mail app shows a docx without comments in a viewer, where
that viewer can be easily induced to share the document with either
Pages or Word, both of which show the comments.

2. The Google Mail apps shows that docx without comments in a viewer,
but that viewer can't be induced to "share" the document with
   either Pages or Word.

The question is how to get the docx from the Gmail app to either
Pages or Word.

If the answer were obvious, we would have found it already.
So, it's going to take some intelligence to find an answer.

That can't be done, as several people have already tried to explain.

The Gmail app does not support the standard iOS sharing feature, which
allows opening a document in another app. The only way to add that
capability is if Google releases an update of the Gmail app which
supports that feature. Ask Google to add that feature in a future update
of their app (then wait and hope), or use a different app (such as
Apple's standard Mail app) to access the message in Gmail account.

A possible workaround: in the Gmail app, you can save the attachment to
Google Drive, then use the separate Google Drive app to open the
attachment in the desired app.

I'm guessing that you aren't interested in that option because Google
Drive is part of "the cloud".

I just solved the problem and it can be done (thankfully).

I wrote up in another post the exact sequence, but, the trick is
to open the Word document in Safari from the Gmail app:
 http://i57.tinypic.com/24c5jye.png

9 out of 12 times that fails because both Chrome and Safari don't
open the document (I'm not sure yet why) but, instead, they request
you log into your Gmail account (which you never need to do):
 Chrome: http://i60.tinypic.com/2airh1j.png
 Safari: http://i59.tinypic.com/15q55ir.png

However, 3 out of 12 times, the document actually opens up in Safari:
 http://i58.tinypic.com/2vaf37k.png

Once the Word document opens in Safari, a press on the white space
of the document brings up the Share to Word (or Share to Pages) menu.
 http://i58.tinypic.com/2u9tsgw.png

I knew we'd figure out a way (we always do); so I thank you for
all your help!
