With iOS, the only need for a folder is when you have two items you want to put into it. To create a folder, I drag one icon onto another; it automatically creates a folder, suggests a name for the folder, which I can accept or type over to give it a name of my own choosing.

The other obvious need is when applying a well thought out organisation to a new device efficiently. Not only is the Apple approach entirely manual, you have to put something into the folder to create it and its pointless putting something into the folder just to create it when it will have downloaded apps put into it once the clean organisation is in place. > To create a folder, I drag one icon onto another; it automatically > creates a folder, suggests a name for the folder, which I can > accept or type over to give it a name of my own choosing. And that is a very clumsy and entirely manual process if you want to have the same set of folders on all your devices.

Hi Michelle, I hope you see that this means that nobody on the planet can organize their iOS device ahead of time. It's like having a closet where you can't possibly have an empty hanger for a dress or an empty drawer for play pants. Nope. If you have an empty drawer, you MUST remove the drawer altogether. If you have an empty hanger, you must REMOVE that hanger. Why, on earth, would anyone have an empty hanger in a closet! It's so shortsighted on the part of Apple developers that it kind of makes you wonder if they really know *anything* about the basic rule of "a place for everything". I guess that the clearly shortsighted Apple developers never thought that anyone had an idea before they even opened up the iPad of where all their apps would go. I guess, they expect everyone to be as disorganized as they must be (i.e., nobody on the planet has an empty hanger in their closet or an empty spot for their boots?) For example, the developers never thought that anyone would have a "Browsers", "Maps", "Mail", "VOIP", "Social Media", "Games", "WiFi", "Picture", "Audio", "Video", "Office", "Shopping", "Install", "Dashcam", "Schedule", "Travel", "Parking", etc. folder. Worse yet, they never conceived of the fact that people wanted these folders in certain locations on the iOS device, such that the most often used ones were on the top row, and the lesser-used ones on the next row, and so on. Nope. What they developed was a system, which, by design, bounces icons all over the place, adds and deletes folders (essentially at will, since you don't control the fact), and basically behaves like the village idiot, where you never know where an icon will be at any one time period. So, given that I have set up plenty of Windows & Android (and now two iOS) devices for other people, it's shocking how *easy* it is to set up such devices for Android and how frustrating it is that you can't organize your desktop ahead of time on any iOS device. It just works on Android, but it's a royal mess on the iOS device. Anyway, we have beaten the lack of functionality of the iOS device to death here. I accept the fact that it's impossible to organize an iPad ahead of time, just like I accept that I have to pay property taxes. There's nothing I'm going to do about it since the Apple developers never thought anyone would want to organize a device (heaven forbid) ahead of time, before they downloaded the apps.

The fact that they didn't cater to you does not make them shortsighted, nor does it make them disorganized. It makes them organized in a way that differs from the way that you are organized. I know someone who has his clothing on hangers in the closet sorted by color, so all items of the same color, whether they be shirts, blouses, slacks, skirts, or dresses, are together. I'm sure that you would never organize your closet like that, but that doesn't make either of you disorganized. > For example, the developers never thought that anyone would have > a "Browsers", "Maps", "Mail", "VOIP", "Social Media", "Games", > "WiFi", "Picture", "Audio", "Video", "Office", "Shopping", > "Install", "Dashcam", "Schedule", "Travel", "Parking", etc. > folder. For example, there is nothing to indicate that they never thought that. In fact, there's evidence that they did think that. For example, if you drag the Photon browser icon onto the Opera browser icon, you generate a folder named "Browsers", but of course, you can change that name if you like. > Worse yet, they never conceived of the fact that people > wanted these folders in certain locations on the iOS device, > such that the most often used ones were on the top row, and > the lesser-used ones on the next row, and so on. Sure they did; they give you the ability to place a folder or an icon on any row and in any column (so long as there are no empty spaces in rows or columns ahead of it); they even give you the ability to move a folder or icon to a different page. > Nope. What they developed was a system, which, by design, > bounces icons all over the place, I've shown you that this is not true. > adds and deletes folders (essentially at will, since you don't > control the fact), Wrong on all counts; it neither creates nor deletes folders unless you tell it to. > and basically behaves like the village idiot, where you > never know where an icon will be at any one time period. Wrong again. Folders and icons remain where you put them unless you remove one, in which case the ones behind them move up to fill in the gap, and you know when that will happen and where the icon will go. > There's nothing I'm going to do about it since the Apple developers > never thought anyone would want to organize a device (heaven forbid) > ahead of time, before they downloaded the apps. True, they never bothered to cater to such a small minority of users.

There is no difference in the way the device is organised, the apps are still in folders. The difference is that Apple's short sighted approach means that it's an entirely manual process to get organised. > I know someone who has his clothing on hangers in the > closet sorted by color, so all items of the same color, > whether they be shirts, blouses, slacks, skirts, or dresses, > are together. You have no idea how many would use that if it was available, particularly if it was automatable so that you could get a well designed set of folders from the store and have them created for you just by installing what you get from the store.

Right; you tell it to delete a folder when you move the next-to-last item out of it.

I have never organized a mobile device's apps that didn't fit on a single page! I have said this before. You organize your folders any way you like. If you're organizing for someone else (as I often do), then you organize by what makes sense to the user. For example, here is the initial setup for a phone I gave as a gift: http://oi58.tinypic.com/iyplz6.jpg You can see the organization clearly, I hope. The items I thought the kid would use most are in the first row. Then there editing items are in the second row. And the third row had the lesser-used items. It rarely takes more than roughly about a dozen folders (or so) to organize *everything* on an laptop, or mobile device. Without resorting to a "util" or "misc" category (if you can help it). Witness, for example, my wife's Windows menu's, which by nature of being (tiny) text, are sorted alphabetically: http://oi57.tinypic.com/rc1zti.jpg Again, you organize your files the way you see fit, but, for me, the scores of apps (perhaps even hundreds) installed on Windows and mobile devices all fit into a bit more than a dozen functional categories. So, as long as I can fit about a dozen folders on an iPad, it all fits nicely in a single page.

For example, I have almost 200 apps installed on my phone right now: http://oi61.tinypic.com/j8ze5g.jpg Yet, my home screen, of commonly used apps, is relatively clean: http://oi59.tinypic.com/64gebl.jpg Where, you'll note, key apps are in both the "Dock" and in a folder! I must admit, I do have a *second* screen, of apps under test: http://oi57.tinypic.com/1in8ts.jpg Which, for example, contains dashcam freeware I'm testing: http://oi57.tinypic.com/2rrnodk.jpg And, system memory testing freeware that I haven't deleted: http://oi58.tinypic.com/33axth3.jpg And, grocery list reminder apps, which I am still testing: http://oi59.tinypic.com/1z1fy8p.jpg And, a sample "Desktop" for testing to set up others: http://oi60.tinypic.com/r94dig.jpg And, even a workaround "Dock", to get around deletion issues: http://oi60.tinypic.com/1zr14br.jpg In summary, while I'm way different than most of the people I set up, the ability to create folders and to put apps in them or not, helps me easily keep just what I need at my fingertip. It would be an order of magnitude more difficult to maintain that same number of apps on iOS simply because of the iOS limitations we've been discussing in this thread.

You still haven't answered my question; I'm not asking how you determine what apps to put in what folder. I'm asking how you organize the folders: i.e., in what sequence do you put them. I suggested one possibility that you might use, namely alphabetically. In other words, how do you decide which folder goes where on the screen?

Hi Michelle, I had already answered that when I had explained how I organize folders on the mobile devices that I set up for others. I organize mine the same way as I had explained because the general principle on all is the same. DOCK: The most often used apps go in the "Dock" (and, in the folder they belong). FIRST & LAST: The quickest needed folder goes in the top left corner. And, the system folder always last. LIKE WITH LIKE: The most used folders go in the top row (with like folders next to each other). The next-most used folders go on the next row (with like folders grouped). The least used folders go on the last row, with the stated exception that the special "system" folder always goes last. Example: http://oi59.tinypic.com/64gebl.jpg Generally, I also have screen rotation off (because it drives me crazy) where I *love* the iPad over Android because it has a dedicated switch set to that effect!

Since the iOS devices disallow the simplest of organizational tasks, organising something like *this* (which are all my Android apps) would be (much) more difficult on iOS than it is on Android! http://oi61.tinypic.com/j8ze5g.jpg On Android, the organization is as easy as this: http://oi59.tinypic.com/64gebl.jpg But, that nice clean simple organizational scheme would be impossible on iOS. So, now, I think I finally understand all the objections to a clean functional organizational approach. Those on iOS devices, since the iOS is not capable of organizing these hundreds of apps the way I organize mine on Android, simply give up trying. But, that's not the fault of the owner of the iOS device. It's the fault of the iOS developers. The iOS developers should have provided the necessary simple tools so that anyone could easily have a clean desktop (like I do), even if they have hundreds of apps (like I do). I'm finally understanding ... what you've been trying to tell me!

It is perfectly capable of organizing those apps to achieve the same result that you have on Android; it's just done slightly differently. But just because it can be done doesn't mean that it has to be done. Your need to organize is merely a crutch for your OCD; you are the Adrian Monk of mobile devices. > But, that's not the fault of the owner of the iOS device. > It's the fault of the iOS developers. You are not understanding anything.

Yeah, I have a couple of hundred or so app on my iPhone on one screen. My iPad is not organized like that at all, however. Also, apps that are in one folder on my phone (🇬🇧) are in entirely different folders on my iPad. Just for example, my weather apps and map apps are in there on the iPhone, but weather apps are in the 📖 folder on my iPad (travel on the iPhone, News on the iPad). This is because on the iPhone, I consider checking the weather part of my travel plans, while on my iPad I consider it part of 'checking the news'. >> Those on iOS devices, since the iOS is not capable of organizing these >> hundreds of apps the way I organize mine on Android, simply give up >> trying. > It is perfectly capable of organizing those apps to achieve the same > result that you have on Android; it's just done slightly differently. > But just because it can be done doesn't mean that it has to be done. Exactly. I certainly don't pick up other people's devices and start dropping apps into folders. -- Whoever had created humanity had left in a major design flaw. I have a similar setup on my iPad, in that, in my "Map" folder, I put the freeware exit analyzers (e.g., iExit) and freeware gas station apps (e.g., GasBuddy) even though they're not Maps, per se. http://oi58.tinypic.com/2a80yuh.jpg I would probably even put the dashcams there, but they are in their own "test" folder at the moment, as I am testing for the best freeware dashcam app, which takes time because I road test them. In the end, the Map folder might be renamed 'Travel' or whatever, which isn't as important as the LOCATION of the folder. Notice on my Android device, the Maps folder is top left: http://oi59.tinypic.com/64gebl.jpg Also notice that on my iPad, the Maps folder is top left: http://oi58.tinypic.com/2a80yuh.jpg Yet, notice on the kids' setup, the "Communicate" folder is top left: http://oi58.tinypic.com/iyplz6.jpg That's because the kid does't use Maps as much as Communications! But, notice, in all cases, the "System" folder is bottom right, as it always is.

Yet, also notice that the youngest grandchild "rebels" (which is just fine) and organizes his four (yes, four) most used apps on his home screen in the order that he wants them. http://oi59.tinypic.com/r0ovw7.jpg Notice, interestingly, that even he, who is a minimalist, puts his most-used app on top left, and the system app on the bottom right, with the most used apps on the top row. In his case, there is only one row! But, this is the same kid who has that 'dress pants' drawer, and an empty 'play pants' drawer, because, to him, pants are pants (and that's just fine). My kids and grandkids all organize their phones the way *they* like them organized. I am only there, as a parent, to guide them, given the experience I have and that you have that they can benefit from.

You're both weird. I put my most used apps in the corners. Top right is the most used app (Messages) because that is the easiest to hit with my thumb when using the phone one-handed. Across the top I have: Phone (4th most used), Clock, Calendar, Messages. In the Dock I have: Mail (3rd most used), [Google Folder], [Apple folder], Safari (2nd most used). Above the dock in the bottom row I have: Settings, Downcasts, Find My Friends, and Nest. The middle three rows are folders. My iPad is entirely different, and apps are not organized much at all. I have a folder for all the Apple Apps and the Google apps still, but I have numerous game folders (Tabletop, Card, Twitch, etc). and a lot of apps that just aren't in folders. I find it very convenient to use spotlight on the iPad, but less so on my iPhone. I tried burying "Phone" in a folder, but despite the fact that I almost never launch the app directly, it bugged me not being on the screen and if I did want to see if there were voicemails I had to dig for it, so it has pride of place as 4th most used app, even though it's really probably about 24th in terms of times I directly launch it. -- Was it everything you wanted to find? and did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there?

It's actually impossible, since *most* of the apps aren't even on the desktop; and some of the apps are in multiple places, but, we could fake the clean organization that we have on Android on iOS by any number of ways, I agree. For example, on iOS, we could just give up on putting items in both the dock and in the logical folders they would otherwise belong in. Likewise, on iOS, we'd just give up on having an app in multiple folders, such as a dashcam in the driving-related folders and in the video-related folders (although at the moment, I have all "my" dashcams in a separate test folder - but that is a temporary organization until I weed out the best freeware dash cams). For keeping the iOS screen clear of least-used items, we could create a single catch-all folder (usually I abhor "misc", and "etc" folders though), containing the many scores of apps which aren't used all that often. If "my" Android phone were an iOS phone, all those things I'd probably do, and then (and only then) would it look like what I can easily do on my Android phone. Luckily, 'my' iOS iPad has far fewer freeware to choose from (which is a fault of the App Store and not of the iPad) so it's cleanly organized without needing those hacks. http://oi58.tinypic.com/2a80yuh.jpg BTW, Michelle, I've shown you mine, now show me yours. If your systems are as clean and well organized as mine, then you'll have an argument. If not, well, then, you prove my point.
