Clearly most of those he has done that for have found it useful. He never said that we should all do it that way, just that iOS makes it too hard to do it that way. That's what skins are about, making it easy to offer various approaches for the users to choose from. iOS has nothing like that. You don't even get to choose between the latest transparent approach and the previous non transparent approach that some like Mezei prefer. You're stuck with what Ive chooses to have.

Oh believe me, I do suggest a lot to many people, and many of my recommendations are well received. If the addressee wants to use my recommendation I either explain to him how to do it, or even show it to him on one or two examples. I fail to see why (at least for most) I would have to do all the work myself - rather let the person do it on their own. That way they even learn something about the used tool - and don't get simply a pre-configured solution without the knowledge to adopt it to *their* needs. >> And having said that, I don't see much point in allowing empty >> folders on a screen as small as that of an iPhone (or iPad). > > Because they arent going to stay empty for long if they have been > chosen properly. Please show me how to choose in Windows 8 to get the Win 7 desktop (with all its functionality) back and throw out the new tile screen. Please show me how to switch from the ribbons in MS Office back to the old menus and button bars. And so on, and so on... Software companies take the liberty to evolve their software, and users may or may not like it. If they don't they will have to decide whether to go for the new release or not, or even to change the software altogether. If it wasn't that way (with all its obvious problems and shortcomings!) we'd still be using old MS-DOS 3.3 commands, or would at least still be using the Windows 3.x UI. Progress will (almost) invariably leave some people behind, and will always contain the risk of going in an altogether wrong direction. But the alternative of not even trying to become better is definitively much worse... Best regards, Michael

That should be obvious on a moment's reflection with the younger grandkids, and even with an adult when it would be a lot more convenient if it was possible to just apply a script or skin to the device to create the hierarchy of folders that he has already worked out rather than write them down on a piece of paper and use your workaround to create the folder structure for them to try and see if they like. > That way they even learn something about the used tool They wouldn't have to if iOS allowed it to be done properly. > - and don't get simply a pre-configured solution without the knowledge to > adopt it to *their* needs. Different appearance over the same set of functionality (aka skin)? Then a different UI would not allow you to get what you want... Then this is something you will (most likely) never get from Apple... >> not some UI garnish... ;-) > > Being able to provide the sort of hierarchy of folders > to organise the apps is a lot more than just UI garnish. Yupp, and that's why Apple allowed the use of folders starting with iOS 4. Just one level deep though, and no empty folders, both for (IMHO pretty good) reason of keeping the whole thing clean enough that (i.e. inexperienced) users won't get lost in all those hierarchies. >>>> However, what I don't understand: Why do have to force a certain >>>> organization scheme up on everybody? > >>> No one forcing anything on anyone. Sure, and if they do they can easily create the needed folders - as needed and very simply all by themselves. My daughter was always (from her first experiences with smartphones) quite capable of arranging apps to her own likings. Whether she followed my advice or not was her decision, no need for me to pre-think things for her. My stance: If a kid is old enough to use a smartphone on his/her own (and not just play with one or the other app on their parents smartphone), they're old enough to learn how to handle that thing on their own. And most notably this applies to arranging the apps to their liking. My role there is the teacher, not the super-user controlling and arranging everything. >> I fail to see why (at least for most) I would have to do all the work >> myself - rather let the person do it on their own. > > That should be obvious on a moment's reflection with the > younger grandkids, and even with an adult when it would > be a lot more convenient if it was possible to just apply a > script or skin to the device to create the hierarchy of folders > that he has already worked out rather than write them down > on a piece of paper and use your workaround to create > the folder structure for them to try and see if they like. Rubbish. You already agreed that no pre-configured structure can by valid for everybody, some parts may be missing, while others may not be used at all. If the user (and owner) of such a device is not capable of handling such 'extraordinary' situations (which are not really extraordinary at all), somebody else (you, me, Liam, ...) will always be called and asked to adjust it accordingly. That's not what I want, others may see that differently. If we're talking about more delicate technical stuff well behind the UIs, that's an altogether different story, there I usually don't bother too much about skilling up the people I help. An empty group takes up 1/20th (or, on older devices even 1/16th) of my screen space - and delivers no value whatsoever. For me that's way too much to make that concept in any way appealing. >> And had they rather learned how to do it for themselves, the idea of >> empty groups would not be needed in the first place. > > Wrong when someone has already developed a decent hierarchical > structure. Hi Michael, This is an important point, if it is true. I've been trying to figure out what the developers were thinking in not allowing the simplest of organizational tasks, like having an empty drawer for "play pants" and not allowing an offset screwdriver to be in both the "Phillips" and "Flathead" screwdriver drawers. Your keyword above was "inexperienced". I think this iPad might have been designed for inexperienced users. If that's the case, a *lot* of the otherwise inexplicable restrictions might make sense. For example, an inexperienced user might not be able to understand why the BSSID is important in debugging WiFi connectivity problems (heck, an inexperienced Apple user wouldn't even *notice* the crappy radios in these things). Similarly, an inexperienced user wouldn't worry that he can't add Gmail to the "send to" destination. They'd just blindly use whatever mail program Apple provided. In that same vein, an inexperienced user might not even notice that links never open up in the preferred browser, as they might not even know the difference between Safari and another browser. Along the same vein, an inexperienced user wouldn't know what TOR is if it hit them in the face, so, again, the lack of any anonymity whatsoever on the iPad wouldn't even be noticed by that inexperienced user. If any of this is true, that Apple developed the iOS specifically to target the inexperienced user, that would go far in explaining why it's so hard to do anything useful with the thing, as compared to, say, my Android phone. What I'm trying to understand is *why* the developers made this iPad so restrictive (as compared to all other platforms), and, well, if they really did make the thing for the inexperienced user, then that explains a lot of the restrictions. But it also makes it simply a toy.

Your definition of "useful" is much different from the definition that most of us have. We consider using the device as a tool to get things done, whereas you apparently consider tinkering with it to be its primary function. We see apps as further tools for accomplishing goals, whereas you apparently see them as items to be categorized and stored. Take for instance, the apps are collectively called "iWork", namely Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. I use Numbers to keep tabular and graphical data about my master points for contract bridge. I can enter data on my iPad, iPhone, or iMac, using dedicated apps, each having a UI that's optimized for the device which it runs on. Or I can enter it on the web using just about any computer and web browser. The changed spreqdsheet is instantly accessible from any of those platforms. Further, I can share it with anyone using a web browser. Here's what it looks like: <https://www.icloud.com/iw/#numbers/BAJKnRcK1gn5K9l3OaCBeOPGsZE7jUEy_2GF /Masterpoints> I've made it read-only.

based on what, exactly? have you even looked at it?
i realize you won't ever download it because it costs a whopping 99
cents, but nevertheless, you can still look at it.

i am the one who said it and it's true.

the whole world might not but a lot of people do.

it actually *doesn't* have tor in the name. its name is red onion.
the secondary part of its name is tor-powered web browser, so it almost
has it in the name.
> And, when *your* life is at stake (which it might be for those

is your life at stake?
> The Tor Browser Bundle is not on iOS. Period.
that particular app may not be but there is at least one tor browser.
> Nothing like it exists on iOS, despite apps with The Onion
> Router in the name.
the app is called red onion and here's what its description says:
Red Onion is a unique browser that lets you access the Internet
privately and anonymously. With Red Onion you can bypass corporate,
school, public wifi internet filters and access the entire Internet
without restrictions with complete security. Not only that with the
built downloader you can freely download videos and music without
ever revealing your true identity or IP address.
Red Onion is a full-fledged Tor-powered browser that offers you a
REAL solution, with multiple tabs, customizable start screen, built
in ad-blocker, history, bookmarks, and much much more.
Features:
- Internet access tunneled over the Tor network
- Websites do not see your real IP address
...
- Access websites on the "dark net" of anonymous .onion web sites,
only accessible through Tor
...
- Download files by just tapping the link or "long press" the link
to Force Download it
- Simultaneous downloads (App Settings > Concurrent Downloads -
default is set to 1 for performance can be changed to max of 5)
- User-Agent spoofing
- Ad-block (for most ad-networks)
- Passcode lock

the rating for the current version is 5 out of 5, with an overall
average rating of 4.5 out of 5.
but unfortunately for you, it is not free nor has it ever been free.
that means if you want it, you will have to save up some pennies until
you have 99 of them, at which point you will have enough to buy it.
however, i suspect you won't and will instead continue bitching.

I understand. Personally, I don't send bomb scares like that Harvard kid did during finals a few months ago. They only caught him because they were looking for Tor activity at the same time the Guerilla mail was sent, emanating from the Harvard WiFi network. Had the kid simply turned on any free WiFi wardriving tool, he would likely have found scores of "available" networks in Cambridge to glom onto in order to send his anonymous mail. As it turns out, they never could have proven he was the guy if he didn't admit to it when confronted with the metadata facts that: a) His MAC address connected to the Harvard WiFi b) At the same time that the unencrypted TOR request was sent c) And, that he was scheduled for an exam at the very same hall that had the bomb scare at that very same time. They *never* could have traced the email itself from the Harvard computer to the Harvard Server because that's what TOR anonymizes. The only thing they knew was that he did *something* on Tor at the same time that the email was sent. The rest was circumstantial.

I could even have done it exactly like he did, with the exception that I would NEVER have used the Harvard WiFi network (it knew too much about him). Something like this should have worked for him: 0. He removes the battery from *every* electronic device he owns (which mainly will be his cellphone and/or tablet) 1. He temporarily turns off his WiFi and changes his MAC address & hostname. (the MAC address is always known to the access point!) 2. He deletes *all* previous WiFi SSIDs in his recently used list! (these can potentially identify where that computer has been) 3. He drives a few miles away, and then turns on his WiFi scanner (let's presume he finds an open or WEP network) 4. He connects to that open or WEP network (at this point, he has to worry about cameras, so he does it at night and obscures the car lights and license plate as necessary). 5. He uses the Tor Browser Bundle to connect to Guerrilla mail (which is what he did) 6. He sends the nastygram to Harvard administrators. (which is what he did, and he properly obscured that nastygram by specifying multiple halls, not just the one he was taking an exam in) 7. He immediately turns off the WiFi and resets the MAC address & hostname and clears the WiFi SSID just used out of the list. 8. He drives around to a McDonalds or Dennys to obscure his tracks in case the police get really diligent with checking security cameras in the area) and pays cash for everything. 9. Back at Harvard Yard, he leaves the computer off the network for as long as he can (so as to widen the window of opportunity) 10. He does the same with the batteries to his portable devices. Had he done this (and I probably missed a couple of key steps because I'm not a criminal), he probably would have been still in the list of suspects, but others would have had similar fingerprints (perhaps with teh exception of all the devices being off). The solution to the devices being off is to buy, with cash, a cheap throw-away burner Android phone to send the email, always keeping in mind the security cameras and time windows.
