The iPhone 4S doesn't support 5 GHz WiFi. It does support 802.11n but at
2.4 GHz only.

All iPad models support 5 GHz WiFi (802.11a and 802.11n), as do the
iPhone 5 and later, and the iPod Touch (5th generation).

OK! It was just that I have my home WiFi network set up at 5 GHz, that
said you are probably correct and it is doing its thing making the
appropriate 802.11n adjustment.

if you have your home network set up as 5ghz, the 4s will not connect
because it won't see it. there *must* be a 2.4 ghz network for it to
work.

if you have a dual-band router, then it's both 2.4 & 5ghz, and the 4s
will see the 2.4ghz network and connect to that without any extra
effort.

Yup! it is dual band.

In a different discussion on a different forum, I noted that with a
dual-band router the Apple gear all seems to find and use the 5Ghz side
of things almost all the time, as does the Sony BD player I have, but
the SurfacePro and ASUS T100 won't unless you split the bands by giving
the 5Ghz network its own name.

I'm still baffled why that is true, but it is well documented in many
Surface forums.

It's either an inferior chipset, or it's a deliberate (stupid and wrong)
choice made by the OS.

There's other possible factors too -- Often a device will fire off a
"Hey network, can I join you?" packet to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz in that
order, then respond to whichever replies first, will naturally be the
2.4GHz since that packet was sent first.

It's not necessarily stupid or wrong, just a function of the fact that
making things happen exactly simultaneously is difficult so one has to
come before the other.

Some access points actually have a feature to handle this, such that the
access point will wait a few milliseconds before responding so that it
can receive and evaluate requests on both bands and push capable devices
to 5GHz unless the signal strength is marginal.

But most consumer grade access points have no such smarts and just do
whatever the device requests in the order that the device requested.

That would be a deliberate (stupid and wrong) choice made by the OS.
