My opinion: Your basic assumption is wrong from the start. Apple never
actually intended to provide a general access to app data, and (my
understanding) with reason.

Like it or not, there's usually not only one way to design a system, as
there are almost always different and contradictory requirements. The
developer chooses which have the highest priority and designs the system
accordingly. Nobody says that the result will please everybody... ;-)

Having said that: I agree that it's (more than) nice that iOS 8 seems to
lift that limitation... :-)

Best regards,

Michael

There is no assumption.

Yes, they have always got that completely wrong.

> and (my understanding) with reason.

Not a valid reason. They should always have allowed the owner of
the system to allow that access if the owner of the system wanted to.

No one has ever disputed that.

But it makes a lot more sense to let the owner of the system
decide what approach he wants to take with something like that.

It doesn't actually.

Your assumption that Apples developers had your use case in mind and
didn't get that working correctly.

>> Apple never actually intended to provide a general access to app data,

Nope, they intentionally blocked that path. That's something completely
different.

>> and (my understanding) with reason.

And that's up to you to decide? I was not aware that you're the central
spokesperson for all Apple (iOS) users and everybody else involved in
this ecosystems...

> They should always have allowed the owner of
> the system to allow that access if the owner of the system wanted to.

Would have been nice, yes. But I'm dead sure that they had some pretty
good reason (regardless of what some 'Rod Speed' thinks about it) for
deciding otherwise. And this reason was with 99,9999999999999999999999%
certainty not that their developers just couldn't make it work... ;-)

>> Like it or not, there's usually not only one way to design a system,

You do by claiming that Apple just didn't get it right.

It does for you. However if you want to design a system as secure as
possible, and at the same as proof as possible against inadvertent data
changes (and data loss) by users, a design like the current one appears
to be the logical choice.

Did you already try it out? I didn't, therefore I have to rely on what I
(seem to) remember from the keynote... :-)

Best regards,

Michael

I assumed nothing of the sort.

All I said is that any decent design should have allowed for that
situation with some mechanism to get hold of the files that have been
created by an app that does not have a decent export mechanism.

Apple did that with photos and to a lesser extent music, but didn't
do it generally.

Didn't provide any mechanism to do that.

No they didn't with photos and to a lesser extent with music.

You're wrong. You can in fact do it quite crudely
by getting the files out of the itunes backup.

Anyone can comment on how well a particular design is done.

They can't have had, there is no good reason for that.

Never said anything about them not being able to make it work.

It's a design choice.

So was the other one that Liam pointed out. There is no mechanism
in iOS to automate the creation of a hierarchy of folders to implement
a decent organisation of apps. That is available virtually all other OSs,
but those involved in the design of iOS didn't see the need to provide
that.

Wrong. I JUST said that that design choice was a bad one.

So is the lack of skins as well.

No it isnt, because it is completely trivial to allow the owner of
the system to allow access to an app's files if the app does not
provide a suitable mechanism for the export of that app's files.

Its completely stupid to just proclaim that if the app does not
provide an suitable export mechanism, the only thing that is
possible is to get the app developer to change to app to add that.

Don't need to. They have already stated what
will be allowed that is not currently allowed.

what features would you have given up to get it?

if apple was working on that from the start, other features would have
not been completed as soon as they had been.

that's up to the app.

apple provides a way to do it and if the app developer decides not to
include it, then it's the developer's decision.

Getting the basics right doesn't, particularly when
you are starting with what was a very well designed
desktop OS and are adding a decent touch UI to it.

Wrong, as always. It was a deliberate choice to
not allow general access to the files an app creates
except with photos and to a lesser extent with music.

That was a VERY bad design choice made right at the start.

You don't have to give up any feature to get it.

That was always available in the OS they started with.

They chose to remove that capability, deliberately and
were too stupid to realise the downsides of that choice.

Even sillier. That capability was there in the OS they started with
and they in fact had to waste time and effort disabling that capability.

Same with multitasking.

yes you do.

like any company, apple's resources are not unlimited and to implement
one feature means something else won't be.

no it wasn't.

multitasking is limited because the device has a limited energy budget
and errant apps in the background can easily drain a battery.

it's a totally different ballgame than a desktop system.

true. one nice thing about android is you can put icons anywhere rather
than in a grid that fills top-left to bottom-right. however, it's a
minor issue.

whether or not a company decides to write an app for ios is not a
limitation of ios. it's a business decision of the app developer.

there is nothing stopping them or anyone else from writing a map app
that meets your requirements, however, it may not necessarily be free.

there are plenty of maps that do what you want, but they aren't free.

some of those used to exist but they used private apis and were pulled.

should those apis become public again, those apps will likely return.

you didn't look very hard.

there is at least one, red onion, but it's not free. it's a whopping 99
cents.

and not everyone is paranoid about needing anonymous browsing.

> Later, I realized all URLs opened in the Safari, whereas

it's actually not the most useful, it's just popular.

there are hundreds of browsers on ios, many of which do much more than
firefox. pick one of those.

a lot of them are free but the better ones are not.

> And, when I looked at the memory utilization apps on iOS

those types of apps are not needed, although there are apps that can
display memory and system usage.

the system manages memory for you and does a better job than you ever
could. plus, who wants to bother doing that anyway? the fact that you
need to do that on android is a drawback.

also keep in mind that the list of apps in the ios task switcher are
*not* currently running. most of those have long been suspended and can
be instantly resumed should the user switch back. the list is
*recently* *used*.

> Now, many will just blindly parrot the Apple marketing by
> saying that these apps aren't needed, but I *wanted* them
> so who are they to tell me I have no need for such apps?

it's not marketing. it's how the system works. they aren't needed.

however, as i said, there are some apps that can show you usage info.

what exactly are you going to do with the information anyway? are you
going to second guess what the system already knows?

you can't even tell which apps are running and which are not in the
task switcher, so how can you know whether force-quitting an app will
make a difference? you can't. in fact, it probably already has been
quit.

needing those types of apps is a limitation.

> Even when the app is on both Android and on iOS, I quickly
> found there were *vastly* more choices for free apps on

that's not a limitation of ios.

it's a decision made by the app developers whether or not to make an
app free or paid, whether to adopt an ad-supported model, or whether to
have a free 'demo' with in-app purchases, aka the freemium model.

if you want a dashcam, get a real dashcam.

you have an ipad. do you really want a 10" dashcam??

i could see using an iphone as a dashcam, but not an ipad.

there are some dashcams that are under $50 and actually pretty good
considering the price.

again, you didn't look very hard.

red laser and shopsavvy exist.

there are several called barcode scanner, but that's a generic name and
i don't know if any of them are the same as the one you have.

there are also over 1000 other hits for barcode scanners. there is no
shortage of barcode scanners.

some of them could even be better than what you have on android.

barcode scanning is now part of ios, so it's actually very easy for any
app to support barcode scanning. it's basically just pass it an image
and get back the data, with all of the barcode analysis handled by ios
itself. because of that, any app can add barcode scanning with nearly
no development effort at all.

the fact that you have to root android to get a full backup is a
ridiculous limitation, and a bizarre one at that. what in the world
were they thinking???

no such limitation exists on ios and backups are automatic, no extra
app required.

needing to manually run a backup app is *bad*.

it's mainly because you didn't look very hard in finding apps and
because you're restricting yourself to free.

a lot of what you want to do *is* available, however, it might cost a
buck or two.

that's not a limitation of ios. that's a limitation of your search
skills and buying preferences.

other than being able to arrange a home screen, they're all your own
personal limitations, *not* ios.

That is just plain wrong. Quite a bit of the time it is actually because

Its silly to claim that iOS always knows best.

I'd much rather use the iphone I already have and get

But plenty of things like password managers, wifi sniffers,
and being able to handle the files an app produces that
the app doesn't allow convenient exporting of isnt.

rarely.

there is nothing preventing anyone from writing a map app and offering
it for free.

it is *not* a limitation of ios.

it's a business decision by the developer whether they think it's worth
the development effort and how much to charge, if any.

that's a decision made by the developer.

it has nothing to do with the operating system.

*everything* has limitations, including android.

apple has *no* problem with those apps and several existed on the store.

however, they were using private apis that can and did change.

private apis are prohibited so the apps were pulled.

if those apis come back, then those apps probably will return.

so far, that's the only real limitation of ios.

they can.

if there was a demand for it, there would be more such apps.

again, it's not a limitation of ios.

anyone can write a tor browser and put it on the app store if they
think it's worth their time to do so.

actually, the system knows when you use the apps and tunes background
refresh based on that information.

depending on memory pressure, the app may have been quit (versus
suspended) but the system will relaunch it as needed.

if you force-quit, you're telling the system you don't want it to be
automatically relaunched as needed, so it will typically reduce
functionality.

refer to apple developer documentation for (lots) more information.

there is no indication whether an app is suspended or quit in the task
switcher so it's not possible to tell.

except it's true. nothing is perfect so there's the occasional edge
case but that would be very, very rare.

the system is tuned by people who know a *lot* more about how the
internals of ios work than any user ever could.

to exist.

that's a different function than a dash cam, and a map display wouldn't
need to be aimed out the window, whereas a dashcam would, and a 10"
device would block one's view.

that's the point. there are much better dashcams that are designed to
be dashcams.

Wrong, particularly when the app developer wants to retain
the same UI for all the platforms that the app is available for.

Apple did in fact pull Google's map app when they had their own.

Never said it was. It is however a limitation of Apple.

It wasn't when Google decided to do that and
Apple pulled the plug on it because it wasn't theirs.

Not even possible with what you plan to do in the future.

That comment was about the make a difference question.

the user has decided to keep doing that.

That is just plain wrong. It blocks password managers
from doing what works best for password management.

It blocks the user from working around downsides in an app
design with the exporting of what the app produces files wise.

that's a decision the app developer makes, not that of apple or anyone
else.

completely wrong.

google didn't *have* a maps app until apple switched to their own
back-end.

apple had their *own* maps app which used google's data. it was not
google's app.

when apple switched back-ends, apple's existing app was modified,
mostly just user interface, since the apis were the same.

at that point, google started working on their own app that used their
own data and and released it a few months later.

no, it's a limitation of the developers and what they think is worth
their time and effort to produce.

apple didn't do that at all.

the app will automatically be quit for you the moment another app needs
additional memory.

until that point, there's no need to quit the app.

Not to mention that it is a bad decision. The UI should conform to the
environment in which it is running. Claris found that out the hard way
with its first release of FileMaker for Windows.

Bullshit it is. Both approaches are just as viable.

Users that use firefox across all the devices
want to have the same UI on all their devices.

You should be able to do it which ever way you prefer.

Apple doesn't allow that.

That is just one approach.

Doesn't say anything useful about whether the user
should be able to have a consistent UI with the same
app on various platforms if they want that.

Feedback from actual users showed that Windows users didn't use the Mac
version of FileMaker, and that Mac users didn't use the Windows version
of FileMaker. So in the next release of FileMaker Pro, the Mac version
stuck to Apple's UI guidelines and the Windows version stuck to
Microsoft's UI guidelines, and the users were happy.

Hardly surprising and completely irrelevant to whether
SOME want a consistent UI across a number of different
devices which we know plenty of them have more than
one of, like desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones.

More fool Claris.

You don't know that, whatever you claim.

mobile devices are drastically different so it *can't* be the same.

they do absolutely nothing to stop the user interface design of third
party apps.

it's the correct approach.

which is almost always substandard, if for no other reason because it
will be the lowest common denominator of all platforms.

Bullshit. There are only a few minor differences like
with the size of what you can tap on being coarser
than what you can click on with a mouse etc.

> so it *can't* be the same.

Even sillier. There isnt any real difference at all
with most of the apps. Just a few extras like the
mic being available with the keyboard etc.

Wrong, as always. The Roboform UI isnt even possible
with iOS because of the design choices that Apple made.

Bullshit it is with stuff used across platforms like
browsers and password managers etc etc etc.

Even sillier. There is nothing lowest common
denominator about the Roboform UI or with
Chrome or Firefox either.

You're wrong, again. I prefer (in almost all cases) a UI tailored to the
device (and it's UI paradigm, general rules, ...) over a 'standard' UI
following the 'one-size-fits-all' approach.

No, it's true. Exceptions apply, but in general it's true.

Firefox? I wasn't aware that FF is even available on iOS (and it isn't),
least with the very same UI it uses on normal PCs. On Andriod e.g.
(where it is/was available) it featured a very different UI from the
desktop one. Chrome is available, but definitively uses a (very)
different UI on iOS...

Best regards,

Michael
