All computers can go from computer to computer by cross over cable.
Many phones can go from phone to phone by near field.
But, is there a way for an ipad to go to an ipad by wire?

No. USB works on a slave/master topography (erm, I think they call it
something else, host/client? whatever). You cannot connect two client
devices together without a host to handle the communication.

No. Not unless there is a way to hack the OS's on both iPads to permit
this and then use a custom-built cable. Such a hack would likely
prevent the iPad from functioning as iPads are meant by Apple to
function.

for photos there is via the camera connector.

otherwise, just use airdrop or wifi.

what's the problem you're trying to solve?

I was rather wondering myself. Even if one doesn't have airdrop, they all
have wifi.

I'm visiting a young relative in Asia who doesn't have WiFi
or a personal computer, who I want to give some of my media
files to. But she has access to a family ipad.

use airdrop. the other person will get a confirmation and the files
will transfer.

I'd be more interested in being able to go from an iPad to my Android
tablet or vice versa. It would be cool to be able to share my
Android's file system with my iPad...

that's what the cloud is for, and not just tablets but anything.

suppose I don't have cloud access? Such as when I'm out on a camping
trip and need to transfer files between tablets? Since an ipad
doesn't have an SD card slot, I'm kinda screwed with an ipad, unlike
android...

And yet, somehow, as if by magic, Apple users easily share stuff with
AirDrop - no cloud of even WiFi access required.

do that before you go on the camping trip when you decided what stuff
to put on each device.

seriously, how often is that scenario ever going to happen anyway?

another option is a wireless hard drive which can hold far more content
than any tablet and serve multiple users at the same time, all over
wifi.

you're not stuck at all. this is 2014 where technology has brought us
wireless communications, either with the aforementioned hard drive or
airdrop.

who wants to move a card back and forth anyway? that is a horrible user
experience.

Yes, carrying a little card around with you everywhere you go, and
having to copy things to it, plug it into another device, and copy files
off of it is absolutely a horrible experience compared to simply
transferring it over AirDrop with a single tap.

> Apple fanboy weenie....

It has nothing to do with fanboys or Apple, and everything to do with
how easy it is to transfer stuff with AirDrop. You couldn't possibly
know how much easier it is, because you've apparently never tried it.
Calling names because you have no idea how bad you've got it only makes
you look foolish to those who know better.

especially when the card slot is in the battery bay. you did want to
reboot the tablet, didn't you?

and not all android devices have card slots anyway.

that's better than the battery bay but it's still a pain in the ass for
copying stuff and pretty much anything else.

yes, and it has nothing to do with apple.

what could be easier than choosing which content to send and then
airdropping it to another device? tap a button and it copies. no
cables, no cards, it just does it.

wireless is the future. sd cards are the old-fashioned way.

and what if your android tablet doesn't have a card slot, like say, the
popular nexus 7?

You're wasting your time. There's a number of fools around here who
believe that fiddling about with a tiny SD card from a camera is
"easier" than simply plugging the camera in with a USB cable. :-\

For those who rrally want muck about with an SD card slot, there are
third-party options for the iPad that will let you do that - some via
wi-fi and some via a cable or Apple's Camera Adaptor.
