Hi nospam,

Air Recorder:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-recorder/id518996624?mt=8

Thanks for explaining why the default Voice Memos for the iPhone isn't
on the iPad. Likewise, this Air Recorder app only shows up in the
iPhone section of my App Search today, but I was easily able to
download the iPhone version, so I thank you for the hint.

I ran the Air Recorder version 1.0.5 app on my iPad mini, and then
tried to put it into the background while it was recording, so that
I could do something else on the iPad.

Unfortunately, Air Recorder stopped recording when it was backgrounded,
but, at least it saved the recording automatically. (Quick Voice
had one nice feature, which was it would record forever, in the
background, until stopped, which is the desired use model).

Air Recorder nicely allow one to choose between WAV or AAC format.
Selecting a recorded file and pressing "open in", I could open
the file on the iPad in iMovie, FileManager, DropBox, VLC, etc.

Unfortunately, "VLC Unexpectedly Quit", so, there are some bugs
in this use model, but, the second time I tried the same steps,
VLC on the iPad had no problem playing the WAV file.

Next I will try to see if I can access the WAV file over USB on
the laptop, either in the VLC "Documents" folder, or in the
Air Recorder "Documents" folder.

It was trivially simple to access the file on Linux!

1. AirRecorder on iPad, recorded the audio, running in the foreground.
2. I connected the USB cable to Linux and slid the file over to Linux.
3. I played the resulting WAV file on Linux.

That's the desired use model! KISS.

The *only* problem is that AirRecorder doesn't work in the background.
Other than that (pretty big limitation), it's perfect otherwise!

Thanks for that suggestion!

Yeah. Like nothing you create with this app on the iPad
can be saved, edited, nor shared.

But, other than that....

Hi nospam,

You, of all people here, seem to understand this app.
I do realize you haven't used it, but you seem to
understand what I slowly come to realize (so, you're
usually ahead of me by a few steps).

I do now realize what you're saying is, in fact, true.

a) The app *saves* files to its private space.
b) It is *possible* to share the files.

The fact that it's impossible to get those files out
of that private space except when you perform three
additional steps is the problem.

The magnitude of these steps are huge compared to the
triviality of what you're really trying to accomplish,
which is simply to access a saved audio file.

Anyway, this has been a shock to me, but, like all shocks,
it's a lesson learned.

It's like going to the doctor to complain that it hurts
your stomach every time you eat an apple and the doctor,
matter of factly, simply tells you, "Don't eat apples".

My lesson learned here is:
a) My files are trapped and it won't be easy to get
them back. I'll likely just play them, real time,
and record to Android and that will be the end of it.

b) I will delete this program, and never allow a single
bit of Nfinity software on my computers ever again.

c) The *next* app I download, my first test will be
whether the data is stuck inside the private space
of the app. If so, I'll promptly delete the app.

Thanks. It's painful to learn these lessons that you
already know. And none of this has anything to do with
Linux yet (which, I agree, adds extra complications on
top of lousy use models).

for you maybe.

for me it would be one step to run their app.

however, i'd use different app and just drag out of itunes.

My mistake Michelle,

The app here is the problem.
Not the hardware.

The hardware for recording sounds is actually pretty good.
The iPad mic and speaker are pretty good.
The sound quality is excellent.

My problem was that I couldn't have imagined that an app
which simply records audio would make access to the recorded
audio so restrictive.

It really did not occur to me until I realized that the recorded
audio was trapped, essentially forever, inside the hardware.

So, you are right. The app deserves deprecation; but the hardware
is actually pretty good.

Let's face it.

This product is DESIGNED to be a scam.

It *is* a scam.

I fell for the scam.

There is no other way to *use* the product.

It records your files, but you can *never* save (because it eventually
deletes them), edit (because they're locked inside the program forever),
nor share them (because many reviews say iTunes won't work with it and
their sync software doesn't work either).

Those who said to simply jailbreak the iPad didn't realize I'm on
7.1.1. which isn't jailbreakable (afaik).

So, I'm left with one final option, which is to go back to the stone
age and play the audio on the iPad and record it with my Android
phone next to the iPad.

That *will* work. But, you can't possibly be saying that I'm
not using the product the way it was designed simply because
the product is a scam from the start that never should have been
in the App store.

I would think Apple would vet this stuff and remove it.

Is there a way to complain directly to Apple about malware in
their App store?

they are only deleted if you delete the app, as is the case with any
app.

you can't edit because the app doesn't offer that feature.

it's not doing anything that's prohibited.

Hi nospam,
Your entire response was apropos.

It's not doing anything, in reality, so, it's not doing
anything prohibitive either. I agree.

Anyway, I think I've learned the answer to the question.

Q: Where does this Nfinity app store its audio files?
A: Inside the app private space.

Q: How do you get the files *out* of that private space?
A: You install itunes; you make an unencrypted backup;
you then install another app on your computer; and
then you use that third app to 'extract' the audio
   files from that iTunes backup.

This is so terrible a use model for something as simple
as an audio file, that nobody in their right mind is
going to put up with it.

So, my decision is to simply delete the app, once I
play the songs to my Android phone, so that I don'
lose all my data when I delete the app.

there are easier ways to implement it, but for whatever reason, that
particular app chose otherwise.

there are over 1.2 million apps on the app store. some of them are not
as good as others. you *are* going to find a number of duds, especially
if you restrict yourself to free apps.

Hi nospam,

I don't disagree with you there, as I'm pretty good with freeware,
having exclusively used freeware since, oh, I don't know, about
the mid 1990s or so (on Windows platforms at first, and then on
Linux).

The problem here was that it had never occurred to me that a
simple voice-recorder app would (in essence) hide its files
from a simple USB transfer.

Bear in mind, the default voice-recorder app on my Samsung Galaxy
S3 had no problem with transferring the files bidirectionally
to and from Windows and Linux.

It just worked.

So, I had expected the same of the iPad (or even better since
I had assumed the iPad use model was simplified).

It turns out that this "private" space within an iPad app is
a sneaky way for a company to "lock" you in to their marketing
plans, which is something, you must know, that I rebel against.

So, what I need now is simply a free voice recorder app on
iOS7 that *will* store the files in the public Documents folder
of that app so that it is accessible for bidirectional USB
transfer.

Here is a screenshot of all my apps on my iPad as of today
(it's a single screen because I always organize my files)
 http://oi58.tinypic.com/152hnix.jpg

For some reason, I can't find that 'default' voice recorder
app you're talking about on my iPad Air, iOS 7.1.1.
