the jailbreak process is easy (usually), but currently it's not
possible to jailbreak 7.1 or later.

that will change at some point, although probably not until ios 8 in
the fall.

Wait for the next jail break to come out, dummy.

heh heh...

I've already said why this can't work, even for those on Windows or
Mac, so, would someone else let Jolly Roger know why this can't
work with this particular app?

it works perfectly fine for those on windows and mac, with almost no
effort from the user.

once again you're making things as difficult as possible.

No need to resort to jailbreaking.

Remember, you had said it was easy to resolve with jailbreaking.

Then, when I agreed with you, and started looking it up, I had
found that it wasn't possible to jailbreak ios 7.1.1.

Now, you call me a dummy for finding that out.

A dummy tries to use an iPad with an unsupported operating system and
unsupported software, and then turns around and trolls the iPad news
group by making pissy, little false claims about the iPad, Apple, and
Apple users. A dummy continues to make such claims even after being
shown they are wrong multiple times by multiple people. A dummy claims
he is a Linux user and then balks at the idea of rooting a Unix-based
device. A dummy does this all while acting like they have been somehow
jilted by the world. A dummy complains that there isn't (yet) a jail
break available for the latest version of iOS. People judge you based on
your behavior. You can either continue acting a fool and wear that label
proudly, or stop acting a fool. I'm sure your choice will be evident in
your response.

I've been using Android for two years, and transferring audio files
bidirectionally between the phone and the computer just works.

On the iPad, I was shocked, at first, that, with Quick Voice recorder:
 https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quickvoice-recorder/id284675296?mt=8

It doesn't just work.
So, I had asked *where* the QuickVoice Recorder files are stored.

It turns out LOTs (and lots and lots and lots and lots) of Apple
users have been frustrated trying to transfer files using this
particular Nfinity voice recorder app.

Here is what Apple support forums have to say about it:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2452948

One telling line in that forum thread is the following:
"Add me to the growing list* of frustrated QuickVoice users who
  have the same problem."

But, there are plenty of other threads, with the same complaint:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/12044317#12044317
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1906868?start=15&tstart=0
https://discussions.apple.com/message/12081165#12081165
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2452948?start=30&tstart=0
etc.

I've come to realize, belatedly, that the problem isn't that I'm
on Linux. The problem is that this Nfinity app is just a bad app,
but, interestingly, it's reputedly the most common voice recorder
app on iOS!

Take a look, for example, at what this site says about it:
http://www.ogbongeblog.com/2011/12/how-to-transfer-quickvoice-files-from.html
"QuickVoice is the most popular, full-featured iPhone/iPad/iPod
voice recorder available... You can download Quickvoice free from
App Store but the problem most users do face is the inability to
sync Quickvoice app recordings with computer.
If you connect your iPad to iTunes, click on the Application tab,
you will not see the Quickvoice app, talkless of seeing Quickvoice
  files available for syncing."

So, you see, Jolly Roger, the problem has nothing to do with the
fact I'm on Linux. The problem is that the most popular voice
recorder app has a supremely flawed use model.

Why the users put up with this flawed use model is well beyond
my comprehension, but, I, for one, will delete it as soon as
I recover my audio files.

Heh heh ... You are correct Michelle.

It never occurred to me that a voice-recording app wouldn't
let its simple file data be shared.

Never in my (old) life, have I had a similar app do that.

It just didn't occur to me that there could be a use model
so restrictive, and that people would go for it.

So, I *do* agree it was I who fell for it. I was the fool.
I was naive. I was innocent. Never in my life have I had
a similar app on Macintosh (years ago), Windows, Linux,
or Android do that to me.

Then again, I never had a app purposefully destroy all my
data before a few years ago until I used iTunes, so, some
of these things you just have to live through once to
know to look out for them.

To be fair, Windows has destroyed a few of my USB
hard drives when I didn't disconnect them gracefuly,
so, some things you just have to be aware of.

Treading the App Store is like taking the subway in
Rome on a crowded Sunday. Nothing is as it appears to
be, and only the Roman citizens, who know all too well
the sheisters in the crowd, are the wise ones.

The rest of us have to learn the hard way.
Lesson learned.

While there's nothing wrong with that statement, I do believe
I understand the QuickVoice Lite use model all too clearly.

Once the user *understands* the true use model (i.e., not
the advertising lies in the product description), then
one knows *exactly* what to do with this NFinity product.

Hi Savage Duck,
I really respect your opinion, but the problem is that this is a scam,
designed to be a scam. What the MARKETING guys say is all a lie.

Read the reviews I referenced already.

Basically, everything they "say" for the "free" tool doesn't actually
work, and, worse yet, the *only* way to get the files off the iPad
is to play them and record them from something like an Android
phone.

I realize you might not have read the reviews, but, that thing the
marketing guys say that you can share it to yourself if need be is
total bunk. It's a lie.

Yes, it fooled you.
It fooled many other users (see the reviews I quoted already).
It fooled me.

But, the fact is, once you record any reasonably sized file with
Quick Voice Lite, it's doomed to be deleted because it can't be
saved, nor edited, nor shared (despite the lies in the product
description) and eventually it will be deleted as they employ
a rolling counter.

So, Quick Voice Lite, at best, is an iPad toy. Useless.
At worst, it's malware (because all your recordings are lost).

Even worse, it doesn't work with iTunes.

And, based on multiple reviews, the nFinity "special" sync
software doesn't work either.

Knowing what I know now about NFinity, they can't be trusted.
Why Apple allows them in the App store is another worry.

Luckily, the solution is to play the HOURS of recordings,
and, in real time, re-record them onto my Android phone,
and, from my Android phone, I *can* save, edit, and share
the recordings.

Sigh.

Hi! The path to your recordings is:

/var/mobile/Applications/XXXX - Apple signature here - XXX/Documents/

You need a jailbroken device to find out the "XXX - Apple Signature here
- XXX". For example, mine is:
FE64F104-3921-4EC1-81F8-B7B89804DC60

Also be aware that this signature changes whenever you update the
related application.

The recordings themselves take the form: Timestamp_myrecording.caf

You may find jailbreakable devices (pre IOS 7.1) on e-Bay or on the
Darknet, e.g. "hackintosh" or "mac4coins".

This is good to know, because if a jailbreak becomes available for iOS
7.1.1, I can then save my files! Thanks.

Ah. That explains the funky directory names I see in one of the mounted
iPad directories when I'm on Linux. Unfortunately, since nobody yet can
jailbreak the iOS7.1.1 device, I'll have to wait for the jailbreak to
emerge.

Now I have just learned an important apple use model.
NEVER UPDATE the iOS until/unless a jailbreak exists!
Mea culpa.

(I'm learning how difficult this use model is, but more than that,
how insanely unintuitive it is at the same time.)

This is a good datapoint. Thanks. I think I've learned never to update
the iOS device, or, at the very least, to wait years before updating
because the update makes the iPad less useful. At least, it did in
this case.

Is there a way to roll back to an older iOS so that I can jailbreak
it so that I can access my audio files recorded on it?

> The recordings themselves take the form: Timestamp_myrecording.caf

I would have assumed they were MP3, so, thanks for letting me know
they are CAF. I saw your other post about tools that play CAF files,
and, I know that, once my audio files are safely on Linux, converting
them should not be a problem.

Thanks for the astute, well-researched reply.
This information helps a LOT!

Much appreciated.

you can save them without jailbreaking.

it's a uuid, not a signature, which guarantees that there are no name
collisions.

that only matters if you jailbreak.

it's only unintuitive because you're using it well out of it's design
envelope.

if you used it the way it was designed to be used, it's *very*
intuitive. in fact, it 'just works.'

I don't think this to be possible since you didn't save your blobs SHSH
beforehand — I use Tiny Umbrella for that purpose —. You may try to
search the Evad3rs and Cydia sites though.
OTH IOS 8 will be out this Fall and a jailbreak will certainly follow a
couple of months thereafter. So be patient and, believe me, it's
wonderful to be able to do whatever you wanna do without using that
crappy iTunes :-)
Anyways, enjoy your iPad. It's a beautiful piece of technology.

that no longer works.

don't be so sure. sometimes it's a lot longer.

ios 7.1.* has been out about four months and there isn't a jailbreak
yet and probably won't be one until they crack ios 8 too.

> Anyways, enjoy your iPad. It's a beautiful piece of technology.

even more so when used as it was designed to be used, which he isn't
doing.

No you don't.
