Windows was announced before the Macintosh was announced, but after the
Lisa was released. Windows 1 came out less than two years after the
Macintosh came out. Windows 2 came out about a year later. Windows 3
a bit over six years after the Mac.

So where is your decade?

The Mac's market share for the first quarter of 2014 was 10.3%;in the
previous quarter (which included the winter holidays), it was 13.7%.
If you include tablets (from all manuafacturers), Apple is the largest
vendor in the world.

Oh, and linux's market share 1.76%

Suspect all you want; that way you won't have to tax your limited
intellectual capabilities.

You must be a member of the Tea Party; you certainly act like one.

You said that the Mac had a decade head start on Windows. The Mac
originally shipped with System version 0.95, in other words, a beta
version, so a comparison to Windows 1.0 is apt in response to your
statement.

Ah yes, deleting the rest of the argument that shows you to be wrong.

microsoft gained its dominance because of illegal business tactics and
apple was also very mismanaged back then.

things are different now. that marginal also-ran has outpaced the pc
industry growth for the past several years, even when the market was
contracting.

plus those market share numbers are misleading anyway since they
include systems such as atms, airport kiosks, point of sales terminals,
etc., which never would be installing any additional software.

the numbers you want is retail market share, and apple has a
significant portion of that. huge, in fact.

meanwhile microsoft flounders and had to fire their ceo.

and the future is not the desktop anymore anyway, it's mobile, where
apple is *very* strong and microsoft is very weak.

What apple calls "Bonjour" is called "Avahi" in linux. And it does the exact
same thing, using the same protocol

the problem is that it's not always installed on linux.

it's guaranteed to be installed on a mac.

Of course it's installed in Linux. Maybe a little research

None of your silly name calling and so on can change the fact that Mac
users typically plug a printer in and just start using it with zero
configuration.

How about a network printer?

Anyway, this discussion is silly. Both systems use CUPS. CUPS will detect
even network printers.

Yet somehow magically using the same software to do the same task

If you think OS X printing consists solely of CUPS, you're wrong. And
the fact that you obviously don't know much about Mac OS X, yet still
feel compelled to make such idiotic and false claims says everything I

Dance around all you want, you can't change the fact that you can
connect most any printer to a Mac and print to it with *zero* user
assistance or configuration. The same is not true for most Linux
distributions.

Okay, plug your Mac into a business network on which a number of networked
printers are connected. Are you telling me they will *all* be configured
and ready for selection?

Thus bypassing CUPS, which will detect them (on Linux) and show them so that
you can select the one(s) you want to actually use?

In general, that's exactly what I am saying. And the fact that you find it
so hard to believe tells me you haven't had much experience with Mac OS
X.

Nope, I'm saying this from direct experience. You, on the other hand,
have shown that you have little actual experience using Mac OS X.

So am I. And I've probably used Linux a lot more than you.

I don't have any experience with it. Which is why I don't say
much about it at all. I'm defending Linux, not dissing OSX.

Pissing contests are pretty fucking stupid.

But since you seem to care, I've used and developed software for various
flavors of Linux since the mid 90s. I've been a Mac software developer
since the 80s. Before that, I developed software for various DOS systems
on various types of hardware. I use both Linux and Mac platforms on a
daily basis, including printing to various printers. So I'm fairly
familiar with what is required to set up a printer on both platforms.
Doubt it all you want though.

Claiming Linux does something better than an OS you admit you have no
experience with isn't my idea of "defending Linux".

Occasionally, a network printer will give you issues. I have one like that
at home, supposed to require a proprietary driver. But a little googling
told me you just set it up as a particular Generic PCL printer, and it works
fine. I've set up business-class all-in-ones from Xerox, HP, and Kyocera
very easily, even in cases where auto-discovery did not work.

A little googling also told me that the Mac OSX printing experience isn't
always seamless either. Far from it. (Though I'm prepared to believe that
an AppleTalk printer is always easy on a Mac).

I never said that.

Well, Roger, like Steiner, you seem to like to twist people's words.

Done with you.

Meanwhile, Mac users generally don't have to do anything except plug the
printer in for Mac OS X to see it and use it.

Not a single person in this thread has stated that the Mac OS X printing
experience is always seamless. So it looks like you enjoy twisting
people's words as well.

You should be done with yourself as well then. Have fun with that.
