I don't know.

You make it sound like no Unix geek ever could afford to test
out the product for real.

Apple prices aren't quite that bad anymore.

I remember when they were on par with a new truck!

That seems like the best excuse to spend another couple of hundred
dollars on a Mac: because a piece of software is installed by default and
won't require a user to type a single line which would install that
software on a distribution which can be obtained for free.

prices of macs are similar for similar specs and in some cases cheaper.

however, at least the supposed price difference is now only a couple
hundred dollars rather than thousands of dollars that used to be
claimed.

aside from price, it's not just one component that's different, it's a
lot of things, which is why the user satisfaction for macs and other
apple products is consistently the highest.

le-tops-pc-satisfaction-survey/1>
Apple Macs have the highest customer satisfaction rate of any PC for
the seventh year in a row, says a study out today from the American
  Customer Satisfaction Index.

that survey may have been over 3 years ago, but very little has changed
since then.

I agree with you about the PCs in the mid-range. Macs are indeed
sometimes cheaper. However, for high-end computers, PCs are hundreds or
thousands of dollars cheaper. Only in the case of the PowerMac and
specifically in the kind of casing that it uses does the Mac come out
cheaper for a power machine. If the casing isn't important, the PC will
save you a lot of money. However, Apple doesn't sell anything for the low-
end user who doesn't need much and if you consider the Mac Mini, not only
is it more expensive than most PCs, it also comes with less. Once again,
if you absolutely need a small case, the Mac Mini MIGHT be less expensive
than a similar PC but who absolutely NEEDS a small case?

That is STILL the case so long as the casing is not considered.

I agree that Apple users are satisfied. After all, it caters to the
lowest common denominator and if complete retards are satisfied, chances
are that even smarter people will enjoy the fact that Apple holds your
hand the entire time and prevents anything from breaking. However, power
users avoid the platform like the plague. A lot of it has to do with the
lack of customization possibilities for the hardware and the proprietary
nature of the OS. You can "do anything you want" with a Mac so long as
that means "anything Apple thinks is OK." It's very similar to how Ford
told customers that they can get a car in any colour that they want as
long as it's black.

LOL! I guess software designers & engineers, system administrators,
hardware engineers, and so on aren't power users then. My Mac-using
buddies at work will get a kick out of knowing that they are not true
power users if they use Macs! : D

What attracts most power users to Macs is the fact that they give you
all of the niceties of Unix combined with the best GUI on the planet,
and yet just work most of the time and are easy to fix when something
does go wrong - exactly the opposite of what you are spouting. ; ) Nice
try, but no cigar.

Dumbass, you didn't read what I wrote at all. The Mac Pro was cheaper
because the PC people were trying to make the same kind of machine
INCLUDING THE CASE.

I was referring to the machine you linked to in the previous paragraph.
I'm not as obsessed with Apple as you are to remember the specific names
they use for their machines.

Except that it is. Buying parts on their own which are identical to what
the Mac Pro uses EXCEPT for the case will indeed cost less on the PC side.

As has already been discussed in comp.os.linux.advocacy ad nauseum, OS X

You don't have to be obsessed to realize that a particular model was

I very strongly doubt that actual UNIX users will point to Darwin as a
good substitute not only to what they're used to but as a potential point
to which to migrate. I don't know of even one UNIX person respecting what
Apple did with that name.

unix users don't get to decide.

the fact is that os x is certified unix.

and the vast majority of users are quite happy with what apple did with
unix by making unix usable by the masses.

Yes! How dare they try to match actual specs during a comparison like
that! The nerve! It's almost as if they are genuinely interested in a
real honest comparison or something! The bastards!

What is clear is you know next to *nothing* about Apple products, yet
talk shit about them as if you know something. And you come off looking
quite foolish as a result. Good job.

No surprise. You've shown an unwillingness to learn much of anything
regarding Apple products. Why start learning anything about them now?

Nope, using the same parts the hand-built PC will be more expensive:

"Apple’s new ‘overpriced’ $10,000 Mac Pro is $2,000 cheaper than the
equivalent Windows PC"

<http://www.extremetech.com/computing/173695-apples-new-overpriced-10000-mac-pro-is-2000-cheaper-than-the-equivalent-windows-pc>

"According to Futurelooks, which has priced out each of the components
in the Mac Pro, it would cost at least $11,500 (including a Windows 8
license) to build a Windows PC that is almost equivalent. Some parts
cannot be matched like-for-like, as the Mac Pro features proprietary,
custom-made logic boards, rather than off-the-shelf components. To build
a top-end DIY PC that has almost equivalent specs to the $9,600 Mac Pro,
you would need the following hardware: 12-core Intel Xeon E5-2697 V2 CPU
($2750), two AMD FirePro W9000 graphics cards ($3,400 each), Asus
Rampage IV Gene micro ATX motherboard ($280), Silverstone FT03 and
Strider 850W PSU ($360), 32GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 RAM ($360), and
two 512GB Samsung 840 Pro SSDs ($450 each). Throw in a copy of Windows
8, and you’re looking at a total of $11,500."

More nonsense from you. Mac OS X has been certified SUS V3 (Single Unix
Specification version 3) for many years.

Ever since Mac OS X 10.5 in fact.

not with the same specs they weren't.

you're absolutely correct.

if you build your own mac pro (old style), you can save a whopping five
dollars and sixty-seven cents.

5-2.html>

as has been noted, for the new mac pro, the difference is *much* more
than five bucks.

in every one of these silly price comparisons where someone claims a pc
is cheaper, the specs are *not* equivalent.

in other words, the price difference is due to the difference in specs,
not the logo on the outside. when you match the specs, the prices are
similar.

but all of that is focusing on the wrong thing. what matters is getting
the best product for a given task, not the final sticker price and
ignoring any further expenses.

sometimes the less expensive product (no matter who makes it) turns out
to be more expensive in the long run.

it's officially certified as unix and has been for years.

if you're representative of the linux community, then it's no wonder it
has such a tiny market share.

Linux advocacy dipshits do not have any say over what is and is not
UNIX.

OS X *is* UNIX. That is a fact. Holding your breath and stamping your
foot will not change that fact.
