Do you even know what "proprietary" means? Is the operating system open- source? Are the main applications? Are Apple's formats in iWork open? Does iTunes mainly use an open format? Does it even support open formats out-of-the-box? The only thing more proprietary than Windows is OS X and its applications. It's a joke to people concerned with privacy. incorrect. windows is far more proprietary. microsoft created windows media, c#, .net, wins and all sorts of other non-standard things for platform lock-in and none of windows is open source. they like to take an existing standard and tweak it slightly so that it only works with microsoft products. compare that to apple, where os x is very standards compliant. apple supports standard formats (mp3, mpeg, etc.) rather than inventing its own as microsoft did. a lot of os x is open source with some of it even being used by apple's competitors, such as webkit.

The only formats it supports thus far (as you know, it's still beta) are native, PDF, Word, and ePub. Numbers is similar, except Word is replaced by Excel and ePub is replaced with CSV. But, come to think of it, those four are all that are really needed, although I'd like to see TSV replace or be added to CSV.

Gee, I must not be using Linux all day at work to build my code, auto-generate documentation, write documents, do email, watch videos, listen to music, even run a few virtual billy boxes for testing. And, at home, creating drawings, modifying photos, writing MIDI tracks using USB controllers and USB audio, working with a powerful DAW application, batch converting videos and files to other formats.... And, on the road, tethering my phone to the laptop and continuing some of these activities. Nah, that can't be it. Does iTunes use open formats out-of-the-box? What about the DRM-free music the Music Store sells? How about the formats iWork saves in? Is the operating system open-source? What about the applications? What about the hardware? Can you modify any part other than RAM or the HD? Can the parts that you modified be from any vendor or do they have to come from specific "compatible" manufacturers? The reality is that the Apple community is indeed imprisoned and the hardware & software does everything to lock you in with them.
