You do realize that such is simply impossible as a practical matter?

The package manager might be able to handle the details, but the
idea that your OS install media can handle all printers ever is the kind
of clueless rube nonsense that you would expect from people that take
pride in the fact that they are ignorant.

Still, the fanboy trolling nonsense here is just silly.

You're trying to claim that YOUR copy of CUPS is somehow "superior"
to some other copy. That's just idiotic on it's face.

Time to dial down the arrogance a bit.

Then Macs accomplish the "impossible", because the vast majority of Mac
users out there don't have to touch a single thing for their computers to
print to just about every mainstream printer, and even lots of others.
It just works, right out of the box. And it's been this way for *years*.
Deny it all you want - you're only making yourself look stupid to those
who know better.

Classic straw man argument. That all you got? Nobody made the claim that
Mac OS X can handle all printers ever. Try reading for comprehension.

The one looking silly is the one claiming things that just work are
somehow "impossible".

If you are suggesting all there is to Mac OS X printing is CUPS, you

He doesn't understand the Macintosh, so he denigrates it.

It's been my observation that those who refuse to be educated can't be
educated, so I'm not going to waste my time on close-minded bigots like
you.

Sometimes the convenient answer is the correct answer. Your attitude
and your history in these crosspost discussions screams that you don't
want to be educated.

Try to find a direct connect POS printer that works reliably with a direct
connection to a mac.

must be crap OSX USB drivers or something like that.

nobody said it can handle all printers ever made.

you made that part up and it's a strawman.

it handles just about anything anyone is actually going to be using,
namely the stuff you can buy at staples or amazon or wherever.

there are certainly obscure printers that might not be covered, and in
that case, the user more than likely realizes they have an unusual
printer and may need to manually install something.

nothing is going to cover all possible scenarios.

itself.

So you're busted and just don't care. Fine. The fact that you feel
qualified to make such untrue and idiotic claims about a product you
don't even use says a lot about your character. Nice job.

My dad had to buy a printer for his i5 Mac a few months ago because the
one he had just died. It worked so well out of the box that he had to
call me, panicking, while I was at work so that I could walk him through
the installation. To give you an idea, my dad NEVER calls me (that's
something my mom does) so it MUST have been an emergency. With my
instruction, he was able to get it working but no, it was not a magical
experience like you Apple zealots describe. It was no better than the
Windows printer installation experience.

Uh huh. Sure, sure. I like how you give zero actual details about the
supposed "problems" he encountered, too. If you think I'm taking your
word for it, after you have clearly shown how little you actually know
about Mac OS X, you need to lay off the dope.

Like I said, I had to guide him over the phone so I couldn't tell you
what he saw because he was explaining to me in Polish anyway. Needless to
say, his printer didn't "just work."

The last time I setup a printer on OS X I did the following:

1) Plugged the printer into the computer via USB.
2) Clicked "OK"
3) Waited about 45 seconds.

Then I spent 15 minutes configuring the printer via its asinine UI to
connect to my Wifi.

I set up my printer by

1) choosing WiFi from its setup menu,
2) choosing my network from the list of networks it can see
3) entering the network's password.

If you were going to connect via WiFi, why bother withe USB connection?

some devices (not just printers) require an initial usb connection to
configure its wifi.

Poor design.

it is, but a lot of products are poorly designed.

however, for some devices, entering an alphanumeric string for the ssid
and password directly on the device itself can be a pain even in the
best of cases, so it's not always a clear cut choice and the usb setup
is a one time thing.
