that has to be due to an overhead from what vlc is doing.

wifi is generally slower but not *that* much slower.

the limiting factor is the speed of flash memory, not usb.

the speed of the transfer itself is but one part of the process.

you're ignoring the rest of it, including keeping track of where the
content is and where it has to go, whether you've watched a given video
and if it needs to be replaced with something new, plus all of the time
it took you to even get to the point where you *could* do that via usb.

and then you have to remember to unmount the ipad so to not lock up
your computer, and if you do forget, you have to include the time it
takes to reboot plus recreate any work that may have been lost because
of the lockup.

with itunes, it's a couple of clicks to sync, either wirelessly or via
usb and in the background if desired, and that can even be instigated
from the device so you don't even need to be at the host computer to do
any of it if it's wireless.

That is an interesting observation, as I would have no
other datapoints than that.

Isn't "most" laptop WiFi about 54Mbps?

Assuming 16-bit words, that's 54/16 = rougly 3mbytes/second

Given that, it would seem that WiFi is inherently slower
than USB because "my" USB got 10Mbytes/second.

Looking up USB 2.0 speeds (which is what I think I have),
it seems that the "effective" speed is 35 MB/s or 280 Mbit/s
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB

So, USB seems to be a LOT faster than WiFi no matter
how you slice it.

not anymore and the actual speed depends on a lot of things.

802.11g is 54mb but that's old.

802.11n is most common now and up to 450 mbit/sec.

802.11ac is the latest and greatest and supports up to 7 gigabit/sec
which is faster than sata 3, but those speeds aren't yet realized with
current hardware. currently, typical speeds for ac are over a
gigabit/sec and should get even faster with updated hardware.

also keep in mind that those are raw speeds and under optimal
conditions. real world speeds will never be that high. a good rule of
thumb is divide by two, and that's if you're close to the base station.

in any event, the file transfer speed is just part of the process.

for instance, i can begin a sync on a device and then put the device
back in my pocket or bag and go do something else while it transfers in
the background. the convenience outweighs any speed difference and for
smaller transfers, the time difference, if any, is negligible.

if i was going to fill a 64gig device with content, then i would use a
cable but for updating some music or even a movie, it's not a big deal
to go wireless.

only if what you're slicing is a 10 year old standard of 802.11g.

Simpler is never having to plug the device in or start a sync - it all
happens automatically with no user action. That's about as simple as you
can get. And you can't do it without iTunes. Your loss.

    Sounds like an artificial constraint.

What you're describing sounds like little more than rsync or any other
network aware tool with any number of interfaces.

   Not really.

No that the two need to be mutually exclusive. That's the problem with
the current Apple mentality. There is an insistence on crippling things
that don't at all need to be crippled.

they aren't mutually exclusive.

those who want a dumbed down drag/drop interface can still do that and
those that prefer the feature-rich and simplicity of sync can do that
too.

Actually, it is a recipe for disaster.

The same kind of thing happens on my Android phone. I still take the
"trouble" (a Mac term, no doubt) to copy my phone's music, videos, and
pictures to a Linux box, just in case.

And for easier access, quite frankly.

The media server is always the definitive source for things.

It is redundant and backed up. A copy may even be "offsite".

Tablets and phones are just disposable terminals.

plug in device.
click sync.

optionally, use wireless sync and skip the first stop. the transfer
speed may be slower but the entire process may end up being faster
because there's no need to physically go to a computer to sync.

and you are also being disingenuous because 'drag stuff to it' actually
means 'find the stuff on the source drive and where it should go on the
target drive and maintain the organization during the copy, including
if there are changes scattered across many folders which means there
may be multiple drags.'

plus, drag/drop lacks all of the additional features that are possible
with a managed workflow, including smart playlists, play counts, etc.

> The ironic thing here is that is a classic MacOS workflow and it's
> something that the current generation of product is hostile to.

it's not hostile. drag/drop is still possible for those who want it,
but it's less functional than letting itunes take care of the details.

plus, itunes existed on classic mac os anyway.

if that's truly the goal, install itunes and let the computer do the
work for you. it is the fastest and most efficient way to do it.

all you need to do is connect the ipad, choose the movies and music you
want and then click sync. all of the internal details are handled for
you (as they should) and you gain a wealth of features you never
thought were possible.

your insistence on *not* using itunes means you will be using a
suboptimal way.

i know you hate itunes, but it's not as bad as you fear and you now
know why it did what it did some years back when you last used it, so
there won't be any surprises anymore.

My main complaint was that it didn't seem to support album-wise music
selection. It's array of checkboxes style interfaces didn't seem to include
one for albums. So if you had a particularly large sub-collection you might
want to limit, you had to deal with strange playlist hacks.

It wasn't that long ago either.

Apple seems to not believe in album oriented rock (or classical music).

Then you didn't look very hard, or you are pretty inept when it comes to
learning how to use software, because it's brain-dead easy to control
which songs get synchronized (by artist, album, genre, album, etc):

it's not spin.

if there's something you can't do then it's because you don't know how,
not that the computer prevents you from doing it.

yet everything you say about them is wrong.

That sounds like the retort of a VMS holdout, not a Mac fanboy.

You would certainly like that to be the case. However, I have first
hand experience to the contrary. This isn't just a matter of repeating
someone else's outdated FUD talking points.

    Don't believe the hype.

Uh, usually not.

Indeed. Almost weekly in our small cube farm there is a Windows user who is
"unable to do work" because "my computer is at the Help Desk".

Why? Most often it is some update or some "anti-malware" (i.e. malware
disguised as a fix or a palliative) that IT has been told is necessary for
the "health" of the users' Windows computers.

Thank you Mr. Obvious.

You are being quite silly and hyperbolic.

The fact is that Linux is *just as accomodating* to consumer users as
Windows.

Those facilities are already present in Linux.

And frankly, most hardware vendors leave users pretty much on their own to
deal with Windows problems. Their margins are paper thin; their ability to
pay for support facilities is small.

Excerpts from Microsoft's "Evangelism is War":

Our mission is to establish Microsoft's platforms as the de facto
standards throughout the computer industry.... Working behind the scenes
to orchestrate "independent" praise of our technology, and damnation of
the enemy's, is a key evangelism function during the Slog.

   . . .

Mopping Up can be a lot of fun. In the Mopping Up phase, Evangelism's
goal is to put the final nail into the competing technology's coffin, and
bury it in the burning depths of the earth. Ideally, use of the competing
technology becomes associated with mental deficiency, as in, "he believes
in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and OS/2." Just keep rubbing it in, via
the press, analysts, newsgroups, whatever. Make the complete failure of
the competition's technology part of the mythology of the computer
industry. We want to place selection pressure on those companies and
individuals that show a genetic weakness for competitors' technologies,
to make the industry increasingly resistant to such unhealthy strains,
   over time.

Ye Gods! It reads like a passage from "Mein Kampf"!

Hmmm, does that sound like /anybody/ we all know when he's insulting
