This problem has got me beat as I can't see why this is happening. I was able to send e-mail from my house but since moving into a motel (while my house gets repaired) I cannot send email from my iPad. I get a message that my email address has been rejected by the server. However I can send email from an Android device such as a smartphone. What is difference with an Apple device that is preventing me from sending email? I can receive email without any problems. -- Regards Brian

Much, much more information is needed to give a useful answer, starting with the exact error message, the mail software you're using (I assume the mailer built into iOS), and who you are trying to send email through--that is, your ISP. And can you receive mail? One possibility is an ISP that lets you receive while outside their network, but not send. For example, my Time Warner Cable email address only let me send when I am home. I can receive from anywhere. I believe it is an attempt to stop spammers from using their outgoing servers. If this is the problem the OP is having, they can find another outgoing server (SMTP server) to use while in the hotel. However, as you said, they didn't supply enough information so this is only a wild guess.

Charter is my ISP. It works fine when I'm home in Southern California, but when I'm in Northern California, I get the rejected by provider message. I suspect that Charter only accepts connections as being valid from only a fixed set of locations. I can review my email by going to Charter.com, but that's obviously not my preferred method. -- Carl Heinz cfheinz57@charter.net (Remove number)

I can receive email without any problems. Others have commented with clues which may point you in the right direction. It boils down to a restriction imposed by your ISP's mail server on how and where you are allowed to connect to the Internet in order to send mail using their server. On the question of why the iPad and Android smartphone are behaving differently: the iPad is probably connecting via the motel's WiFi network, whereas the Android smartphone is connecting via the cellular network. Having experienced this myself (also being in New Zealand), I can make an educated guess that your e-mail account is hosted by Vodafone or one of its acquired networks (ihug or TelstraClear), most or all of which have mail servers that are configured to only allow sending mail if you are directly connected to one of Vodafone's networks. If your Android smartphone is on Vodafone, it would be allowed to send mail using any of the Vodafone servers. If the motel's Internet connection is via someone other than Vodafone (or one of Vodafone's subsidiaries), such as Telecom NZ, then Vodafone's mail server won't let you send mail via the motel's network, because you are attempting to do so from outside of Vodafone's own network. The usual workaround is to use webmail to send mail while away from home. In this case, you might also have the option of setting up a personal hotspot on your Android phone (I don't know offhand what Android calls it, or whether your particular phone has this feature), which allows the Android phone to create its own WiFi network. Your iPad can join that WiFi network, and would then be connected via the cellular network so the rules imposed on the cellular network would apply for sending mail. Since the Android phone can send mail using the same server, the iPad should be able to. This will of course use part of your cellular data cap, so should only be used sparingly - reconnect the iPad to the motel's WiFi network once you've sent the email. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Thanks for your reply David. You are right in that My email account is with Vodafone. I only send email on my Android smartphone using wifi as the the cellar network for data is turned off. Also my Samsung tablet does not have a phone but sends email with no problems in the motel. I have tried changing my email details to match the server provider of the motels provider by changing Vodafone to Xtra but with no luck. However i'll consider your suggestion. As the android smartphone is not sending mail by cellular then its really strange that the iPad won't send email. I have checked the amount of money remaining on my android phone and it had not changed after sending a email. So my email must be sent by using wifi. The android phone is more up to date with technology than the iPad 2 which must be about 3 years old so maybe thats why the smartphone works. -- Regards Brian

That probably won't work becuase Xtra now requires authenticated logins from Xtra customers to be able to send mail using their (actually Yahoo's) servers. You aren't an Xtra customer so you don't have the right login details (unless the motel gave you their username and password, which I hope they didn't!) > However i'll consider your suggestion. > > As the android smartphone is not sending mail by cellular then its really > strange that the iPad won't send email. In that case, I suggest having a close look at the settings being used on the Android smartphone and tablet (if they show them) for details about _how_ they are connecting to the outgoing mail server. In particular, the host name being used, port number, which authentication method, whether SSL is enabled, and the form of your username (e.g. whether it has just the bit before the @ or your entire email address). The iPad may have different settings (e.g. it might not have authentication turned on, so you are trying to send email anonymously). On the iPad, the outgoing mail server settings are in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > tap on the account name > tap on SMTP under Outgoing Mail Server > tap on the server name in the list (or add one if necessary). > I have checked the amount of money remaining on my android phone and it had > not changed after sending a email. Email connectivity isn't something that depends on hardware advances in mobile devices in the last three years. The iPad should support all the necessary settings if your other devices can connect via the same network - it is just a matter of adjusting the settings on the iPad so they match the other devices. -- David Empson dempson@actrix.gen.nz

Thanks David for your help. I did compare settings of the two devices when I first had the problem but I may have missed something so I'll do some more checking and like you say it might be something like the authentication not being turned on. -- Regards Brian

Just a quick post to let you know that I managed to get my iPad to send email. I made a few changes but I think it may be due to not having the authentication set to password that prevented me from sending email. Thanks again David for your suggestion. -- Regards Brian

If those settings worked previously, then your email provider probably changed the way the server was configured to do authentication.
