I'm moving the contents of an existing 4th gen iPad to a new iPad Air (delivered today, I think), and then moving the contents of a 1st gen iPad to the the 4th gen device. The process for moving an old iPad into a virgin iPad is clearly explained, but moving the contents from one used machine into another used machine isn't so clear. Is it as simple as performing a "restore to factory settings" on the 4th gen machine and then doing the transfer? In the end, I want the Air to assume the identity of the 4th gen machine, and the 4th gen to assume the identity of the 1st gen machine, and have iTunes continue to recognize them as such. -- bert@iphouse.com St. Paul, MN

It all worked pretty much as I hoped and expected, except that none of the music or videos got carried over. No big deal, since they're all in iTunes. Slightly more annoying was that most of the passwords for apps that used them didn't come across. Some did, but I can't see the pattern. Anybody know a practical use for a 1st gen iPad? Night Light? Serving platter? -- bert@iphouse.com St. Paul, MN

Some did, but I can't see the pattern. it depends how the app stores passwords. it's a security measure. if you used an encrypted backup, all passwords will be stored in the backup, no matter what the app does. if not, only some are, because someone could potentially look in your backup and get the passwords. > Anybody know a practical use for a 1st gen iPad? I'm struggling with an iPad Air that won't do simple things my old one did right now. -- Erilar, biblioholic medievalist with iPad
