I do have occasional problems with iTunes (mainly > that it seems to lock up frequently while I'm listening to iTunes > Radio). But a simple restart fixes that. iTunes 11 has been pretty awful for me. iTunes on iOS is generally OK, but still has a lot of problems. For example, the other day I was in the song list, but the bottom menu bar had vanished, so there was no way for me to get back to playlists of albums, I had to force quit it. Also, when streaming from iTunes Match I will often get a hiccough where a second of so of another song will suddenly play in the middle of the current song. Often this will stop play back of the current song. iTunes Radio will often skip to the next song before finishing the current song. The app will sometimes become unresponsive for extended periods of time, and its behavior with Bluetooth, especially when there is an event that interrupts playback is ... capricious. -- I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.

It's certainly not without flaws. I'll give you that. I do wish Apple would spend more time fixing its many bugs. My point is that even with these issues, it doesn't inconvenience me enough that I'd bother going out of my way to find some other solution that frankly won't meet all of my needs. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter. Oh, well, yeah, that's certainly true here to. Although there have been times I've been pretty damn angry at iTunes 11. It is *still* trying to sync (and failing) two apps to my iPad on occasions, and has been since iOS 7 GM. I've been through seemingly countless hoops to get it to stop, and maybe the last time worked, but every time I think it's been fixed it comes back in a week or three. -- @mdhughes: One of the few regrets I have about lawn-less apartments: Shallow graves are so much harder to come by.

Don't know - iTunes had always sucked - just in differing degrees.

Consider a different brand/type tablet, then you won't have to think about iTunes. I don't seem to have the problems with iTunes the anti-people do, and I don't know why they have some of the problems they do. iTunes never "forces" me to go to the Store and to doesn't seem to have messed up my computer. OTOH I'm just using it to do its job, I'm not trying to tell it how. I don't find it any more imperfect (or opaque) than various other apps I've used over the years; maybe I'm just used to working around/with less-than-ideal situations in both s/w & life. A bit of grousing, figure out how to cope, and get on with the job. bj

Because it makes vacuum look like something that doesn't suck?

It's the air around the vacuum that pushes! ;)

The cost of avoiding iTunes is that you cannot successfully use an iOS device--iPad, iPhone, iPod--without iTunes. Better she should look at Android. And iTunes is schlock and iOS users depend on it.
Curious, eh?

That is simply untrue at this point. But it is true that for certain things (e.g. putting music and video files on the device) one wants iTunes. But you can buy books, music, video, etc. without using iTunes, at least without using the desktop version. And you can stream music and video without iTunes. Etc. I wouldn't recommend going into the experience of using an iPad with a pledge never to use iTunes on your Desktop, but I essentially never do that at this point.
