Indoors it's fine, unless you need a flash. Outdoors, especially in bright sunlight, it's next to useless (for me, YNNV). I found the *Camera Genius* app useful with it's big button. I call the iPad my *Point and Guess camera*! I've mostly gone back to my Fuji D6500f SLR. I can't use the eye level viewfinder, but i have a 6x magnifying glass fixed in front of the screen and as my head blocks out most of the light (the problem with the iPad outside) it works ok for me. -- zulu

These will never be obsolete with savvy photographers. Many photographers, including me, use them out-of-doors in bright sunlight. I do macro still photography and DSLR videography and it would be much more difficult without my sun shade. The best thing is to have one custom made that is bright on top (silver lamé works well) and black underneath. Here is a special case of an analogous device from my Flickr page <http://www.flickr.com/photos/primeval/7330583740/in/photostream>, with a MacBook Pro in the mix. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

The Canon camera is connected to the MB Pro via a USB cable. The Mac is running Canon's Digital Photo Professional and EOS Utility softwares. Using EOS Utility one sets the camera to "Canon Live View" mode. It streams low-frame-rate video to the computer as a focusing and composing aid. It is by far the best, most accurate way to to focus a Canon DSLR for astrophotography, day or night. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

I can (obviously) connect my Fuji to my Dell PC but have no way of doing that. I can only copy or transfer pictures I've already taken. My interest is in macro rather than astro, but the need is the same. -- zulu

It's the camera, not the Dell. I don't have a list of cameras that can do live viewing for focusing purposes, but Canon (certain models) is not the only brand, and the Canon software works the same on Windows as on Mac OS. I do a lot of macrophotography myself--I photograph mainly arthropods for contribution to eol.org. See <http://www.flickr.com/photos/primeval>. The Canon Live-View function is not an aid to macrophotography in my opinion. -- I agree with almost everything that you have said and almost everything that you will say in your entire life. usenet *at* davidillig dawt cawm

He has a severe vision imparement and I suspect he wants an "electronic magnifier" for lack of a better description.
