Whereas my desktop doesn't travel, so I didn't need to buy a huge internal SSD for compact packaging - - just enough to exploit its ~7000 MB/s performance level in my primary workflows. The rest of my data can go on external SSDs at lower price/TB, which is a trade off of performance vs cost ... but they're still several times faster than a HDD on SATA-3, especially in latency. -hh

My entire computer is the tool I purchased, and I looked at the entire price of the tool I needed and the value of that tool to me and I paid it. The irony is that despite how he's complained about paying more for brand names (eg, Apple), he's ended up doing the same thing with his DIY components selection by choosing brand names over lowest possible price. System level OEMs sell products with warranties, so they have to take component reliability costs more into account in their supply chains. That's why I've never had an Apple OEM power supply fail, despite an average personal home ownership period of 8+ years, and likewise, when maintaining a fleet of office Macs, had zero failures over 300+ machine years of operation. With electronics, when one shops for "quality", what you're typically paying for is a lower infant mortality failure rate. For today's switching power supplies, after infant mortality their common failure mode is from the drying out of the electrolytics in capacitors, which nominally starts to arise after 8-10 years of operation. Sure, there are occasional bad batches that can slip in (IIRC, Apple had such a batch on their iMacs around a decade ago), but these are managed by the system OEMs tracking of profit losses due to excessive warranty claims. So lets see if Joel will be able to cite any meaningful contemporary reliability lifespan problems with Apple..or any other mainstream OEM. -hh
