I'm taking a trip to Europe in a few months, and I want to use a prepaid SIM. Verizon uses CDMA, but other American carriers use GSM, so I'm certain the G3 has the capability. Can it handle the European GSM frequencies? Will the local SIM even work without unlocking the phone?

Find the *exact* *product* number of the phone ("G3" is a 'name') and
with that product number, search google.com.
For example my Huawei Ascend Y300 is actually a Y300-0151, where the
"-0151" indicates that it's the Australian version which (also) has
the Australian UMTS frequencies.

If the phone is SIM-locked, the non-Verizon SIM will *not* work
without unlocking the phone.
Is it a *smart*phone? ('CDMA' sounds so old-fashioned/obsolete here in
the civilized world).
If it's not a smart-phone, why bother at all? 10 to 20 (US) dollars
will buy you a 'dumb' phone, often even with SIM or/and even unlocked.

Well, gsmarena.com lists the following for the CDMA G3: LG G3 VS985 for Verizon LG G3 LS990 for Sprint Technology GSM / CDMA / HSPA / EVDO / LTE 2G bands GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - VS985, LS990 CDMA 800 / 1900 - VS985 3G bands CDMA2000 1xEV-DO - VS985 HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 - LS990 4G bands LTE band 4(1700/2100), 13(700) - VS985 LTE band 25(1900), 26(850), 41(2500) - LS990 Speed HSPA, LTE Cat4 150/50 Mbps (LS990) LTE Cat4, EV-DO Rev.A 3.1 Mbps (VS985) So 2G works. With a quick look Wikipedia says bands 4 and 13 aren't in use in Europe so no LTE. There are apparently some CDMA2000 networks in Europe so it's a maybe if you're going to any of those places. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CDMA2000_networks for a list. > Will the local SIM even work without unlocking the phone? That's something you should ask Verizon.
