That edit function usually allows for copying the number to the
clipboard so if there's no other way you can then add a contact with
whatever way and paste the number from the clipboard.

Android 7.0, $130 LG Stylo 3 plus, stock phone app which "Applications
Info" reports as com.android.providers.telephony 5.30.51 located in
/system/priv-app/LGTelephonyProvider/LGTelephonyProvider.apk

a. Make call (or receive call) & then go to the "Call logs" tab
b. Tap the log entry, up comes "Create contact" & "Update contact" buttons.
c. Hit the "Create contact" button (edit if desired) & then "Save".
Voila.

PS: "Applications Info" is essential, IMHO), for anyone posting to c.m.a
because it provides the unique name (version & location) for every app.

BTW, I just noticed that, while the storage location has "LG" all over it:
 /system/priv-app/LGTelephonyProvider/LGTelephonyProvider.apk

The actual unique APK name seems to be "generic" on the LG Stylo 3 Plus:
 com.android.providers.telephony 5.30.51 

Does anyone know if this is a "special" LG-only phone APK, or if it's just
a generic Google phone APK that anyone can download?

I have a Recent "tab" and a Contacts "tab".

Short tap just dials the number. 

Long tap gives many choices but not the one I want:
  Send a message
  Edit
  Copy 
  Block
  Clear call history
  Clear batch

Edit was the closest but tapping that just took me back where I was, to
the Recent list.

That I can do, but I have to write the phone number down to know what to
put in.  Sonmetimes I don't even have paper or pencil, but even if I do,
it's inconvenientn for something that the other guys here have almost
automated.   I wanted the phone to copy it over.

I can only help you three ways, I think:

1. It will be helpful if you download and install this app from Google:

Then, you tell all of us what that app says about your "phone" app.

2. If we can find an upload/download site, I can give you my phone APK.
It "probably" will work on your phone (only way to tell is to test it).

3. Others who know more than I do can tell you where you can get the phone
app that I have, which is com.android.providers.telephony version 5.30.51.

Thank you for finding that APK for the OP, which seems to be the one I
have.

According to the email address, that app you found is "developed" by LG
where, I suspect, they simply "improved upon" a Google phone app base (but
I'm not sure of that).

If the OP wishes to, he can download and install that APK and then he'd
have the functionality he needs - if - if the APK works on his phone.

Thanks to both of you.  I may do this, but the work week has reminded me
of other stuff I have to do. 

I have to mail a letter to the state governement, so I went to the store
for envelopes and all they have are email envelopes.  I touched one and
got a shock. 

On Amazon the smallest package is 45, but they sell them 2 packages at a
time, so I may just use one of the left-over envelopes from the electric
bill.
