#21835 — What's your take on the new Verizon plan to drop contracts?

Just curious what your take is on the Verizon response to 
T-Mobile by dropping contracts.

This article doesn't show what a family plan costs, but, it
talks about some very confusing catches in the new plans which
start August 13th.

Those of you with Verizon - is this really the vastly needed
move to simplification & no contracts - or just marketing bull?

(I'm on T-Mobile, where I haven't had a contract in years, nor
do I pay them for a phone, nor do I every pay when I go over
my data limit - it just slows down.)

I'm at a loss to figure out what the big deal is but that may be because 
I've not had a contract for years and have always bought every one of my 
own phones outright (except for the first flip-phone many years ago when I 
didn't know any better). It kind of reminds me of people who go so far as 
to rent-to-own tires and wheels or audio equipment for their car when the 
overall cost for them will be more than the car is worth.

"Rent the wheels you deserve."  Jeez, it's hard to imagine a better 
reason for poor (and stupid) people to stay poor or a better way for 
people to make money from that fact.

and "Poor critical thinking skills".

If I had a couple billion and wanted to spend it on one thing to make
the world a better place I would start a foundation dedicated to
developing and implementing grade school, middle school, high school,
and college-level courses in critical thinking.

One of the two teachers I remember the most fondly was my seventh-grade
science teacher in Westport Ct, Mr Sheldt.   One of the exercises he put
us through was bringing full-page advertisements to class where we
picked them apart as to what they were trying to do and how they went
about it.

If people weren't stupid they'd have better critical thinking skills. 
'Stupid' clearly cuts across all economic classes, but the cluster is 
clearly toward the lower-income end of the scale.

Good for Mr. Scheldt.  I can't imagine a better 'critical thinking' 
course.  Bring in articles about medical studies too, espcially the ones 
involving 'superfoods'.

There isn't any evidence that the most stupid who
are the problem can be taught that by any method.

Been with Verizon since day one and IMO, I'm seeing more marketing bull, 
as with most, if not all major corporations with deep pocket CEOs.
There will always be hidden costs to keep them in the game.

One issue which pisses me off is the Hot Spot feature. The fact they 
want to charge me for using a device through my phone simply proves 
their greed. Businesses nickle and dime us to death but the total 
benefits their pockets.

Why? Are you being charged to use your Verizon phone as a Hot Spot?

I have used Verizon starting in the days when they were still GTE then 
GTE Mobile with my Nokia brick.

I regularly use my iPhone as a Hot Spot to provide an LTE 4G pipeline 
for my iPad, all without issue and without additional charge from 
Verizon.

That has not been my experience with Verizon.

As I Stated to SD, perhaps it's already within the plan you have. Since 
I've had my plan for many years, it's probably considered old. They 
wanted me to upgrade to the everything plan which contains hot spot but 
I'm already paying for data on my current plan. I shouldn't have to pay 
to use any device through my phone, it's my data to use however I want.

you can keep your existing plan, but they're going to make it hard for
you to do that by offering all sorts of features to get you to switch.

Thanks.  I'm with AT&T but just wondered.  Everything else is FIOS,
phone, Internet and TV.  We live in a swale and had problems with
wireless reception.
