Give me a break. They were shut down for violating the terms of service
of Apple, Google, and Amazon. These are private companies that are not
under any obligation to provide a platform to anyone that wants one and
that doesn't follow the terms of service that they agreed to.

Republicans are always promoting the free market. If a bakery doesn't
want to bake a cake for gay couple's wedding then the bakery doesn't
have to. If a business is boycotted by people that don't like the
politics of the owner--whether left or right, that's the free market. If
advertisers refuse to advertise on Tucker Carlson's show, that's the
free market. Deal with it.

Parler is certainly free to self-host, or to find another host provider,
and that's exactly what they are saying they will do. They can certainly
find a host provider that doesn't have any restrictions on any speech.
There are hosting services outside the U.S. that would be thrilled to
provide hosting services for a social media company that allows posts
that advocate violence, that encourage the overthrow of the United
States Government, and that spread false information. Probably Trump has
already asked Putin to help out with this.

The much bigger issue is the mobile app. While Parler can certainly just
do a web-based service, that will be much less popular than a mobile
app. Android users could always side-load an app, but few will do that.
It'd be really hard for iPhone and iPad users since they'd have to
jailbreak to load an app not present on the Apple App store.

no they don't. jailbreaking is not required to sideload on iphones.
it's a little more effort than on android, but not impossible.

The problem in communication now is that it's ALL done by private
companies. At what point does freedom of speech become nonexistent not
by governmental action but by commercial entities?

Not "ALL" but mostly.

When was it not done by private companies? Other than entities like
Stars and Stripes and Voice of America, both of which have been attacked
by right-wing Republicans recently, newspapers, radio, and TV stations
have always been private entities.

Trump tried to shut down Stars and Stripes and almost succeeded
<https://www.stripes.com/news/us/pentagon-will-reverse-shutdown-order-for-stars-and-stripes-1.644638>.
VOA has been under attack as well
<https://www.voanews.com/usa/voa-director-reassigns-white-house-correspondent>.

Anyone can start up a new media company to promote their agenda. Look at
Fox, Washington Examiner, OAN, Gab, Parler, etc.. None of them are
truthful, but no one stops them from saying whatever they want. It's
more that they can't get advertisers because of their false rhetoric.
Who would advertise on Parler or Tucker Carlson other than the My Pillow
guy?

Parler will be back, they just need to find a web hosting company that
doesn't have terms of service that they are unwilling to abide by. And
they'll have to rely on a web-based model since Apple and Google won't
allow their app to be distributed on their app stores.

which is very unlikely.

they also need to pay off their mountain of debts, including legal fees
for their silly lawsuit against amazon and after they lose, almost
certainly amazon's legal fees.

which will make it at best, a curiosity, assuming they can find
hosting, which is not a given.

There's still usenet, but I wonder how long that could last under
concerted attack? My ISP dropped it because of expense and low usage.

Very few ISPs still support it. There are tens of thousands of
newsgroups, most of which have either been destroyed by trolls and
spammers, or have been abandoned as irrelevant. Some Usenet groups have
been removed in the past because they discussed subjects that were
inappropriate, though not illegal.

Let's hope that Trump doesn't discover Usenet.

true, however, there are many third party usenet providers.

true for the discussion groups, but very much not true for the binary
groups which is the bulk of usenet (and not just because binaries are
bigger either).

unlikely, but if that were to happen, the group would reappear under a
different name or the discussion would move to another existing group.

They are irrelevant while news servers are still available.

Mostly just unused now.

Very little of that happened.

Even if he did, few have even heard of it.

You've never had legal freedom of speech protection when using a private
entity. Only from (US) governments.

Exactly. The government can't stop you from saying whatever you want,
but private entities aren't required to provide a platform for you to
say it.

We used to have the Fairness Doctrine which guaranteed access to private
media entities for different political viewpoints. The Supreme Court
ruled unanimously in 1969 that the Fairness Doctrine was not only
constitutional but essential to democracy. Republicans eliminated the
Fairness Doctrine in 1987 when Reagan was president. Perhaps now they
wish that they hadn't done that.

I know. But it's only recently become a problem. Would anyone have

When overthrow of out electoral system becomes the primary message, some

You can still gather like-minded people around you and communicate with
them directly (or protest along them), as it was the case back when the
"freedom of speech" concept was conceived.

> At what point does freedom of speech become nonexistent not
> by governmental action  but by commercial entities?

That's already the case. Say something considered "inappropriate" by the
advertisement companies (or accidentally use some snippet which triggers
the copyright enforcement filters) and you will be censored immediately.
Sometimes, a single controversial word is enough. Repeat this on a
regular basis, and all of those fancy "social media" companies will ban you.

If you intend to rely on some commercial company to express your
thoughts, you're lost.
