[...] I live in Denmark and have an Android phone. About once a month I get an email from google, with a link where I can see where I have been every day, in a form of maps. This is fine with me, but there are errors. Once that map reckoned I had been a certain route the previous day, which was totally wrong, grabbed out of the air. It WAS a route I often take, but not on that day. Again, this might just be funny, but people have been convicted on the basis of such records, when it was not true, so generally this is a worry. But, of course, most people would not see the sense of having a phone that works as a phone. :)

I don't think that people can be convicted on the basis of such "records", because what you are seeing is the google interpretation of the data it has, not the actual data. The link was rigged to go to fgsfulfillment.com, with identifying parameters tacked on, which would then forward to my insurers site. My insurer is subject to HIPAA medical privacy law. But who is fgsfulfillment? I'm still not sure. The domain is privately registered. Other clues I found seem to indicate a company owned by an Indian man. Or maybe it's Financial Graphic Services, whatever that means. Their site seems to be hosted by one onx.com, so this shadow company handling medical data don't even have their own servers! When I go directly to my insurance company site there's still Google Tag Manager on their page. So they can't share my data, but they can. Fortunately, I've got almost everything Google in my HOSTS file, but most people do not. And Google partners with PRISM. No extent of detail in spyware data should be surprising anymore.

I generally leave my phone's location setting off when I'm in familiar local territory since it may feed my location to more than just Google apps. But on trips I enjoy the services of Maps so need to turn it on. However I have paused my location history in: Google Dashboard > Your Activity Data > Location History. I also pause 'App and Web Activity' and 'YouTube History'. Dunno if it does much good but it makes me feel better.
