How does whatsapp work? I'm uncertain because aiui people dont enroll in whatsapp. They dl the app and then use it. Does this first use form some kind of enrollment? I ask because I've used my contact list to tell if somoene has whatspp installed or not. Is it accurate to do that? If you call and no one answers, you can't leave a voice message but I thnk it now offers to let you send a text. If you call and the phone is off, does the same thing happen, offers to let you send a text? More imporrtantly, whether you tried to call or not, if the phone is off, can you send and they receive a text when they next turn the phone on? Their whatsapp number will always appear in your contact list?? Even if the phone is off, if they have ever used whatsapp? OTOH, one can tell if they have it installed because in my contact list, if they do, there will be a whatsapp number and if they don't there will not be one? Wait, that would probably only work if their whatsapp number is the same as their cell number. Do you see why I'm befuddled?

I don't understand Whatsapp well enough to answer all of Micky's questions, but I do want to say that it works just fine WITHOUT any contacts at all. Whatsapp does hash the contacts, but the nature of VOIP hashes for contacts is that the salt has to be the same forever, so that's a privacy issue. When I want to dial out, I just use the WhatsApp dialer, which itself, will work just find if the person we're dialing happens to have WhatsApp themselves. It used to be the only reason I added Whatsapp was that everyone I know in Germany seems to be using it instead of phone calls and SMS/MMS, but then it turns out that Whatsapp also does video way better than MMS/SMS does. Particularly when the parents of the grandchildren are using the iPhone. I suspect RCS may make that second reason moot, over time, but I don't use RCS yet.

It does to that well. When I'm in a foreign country, I've had video calls with a friend of mine who refuses to travel with me, that have lasted 45-60 minute, on 3 or 4 occasions, showing her tourist stuff. And since I had plenty of data on my plan, it was all for free. it's amazing. Originally I did it to encourage her to come with me, but now she's gotten the flavor of the country without leaving home or spending a dime so I think I'm defeating my original plan. > >Particularly when the parents of the grandchildren are using the iPhone. > >I suspect RCS may make that second reason moot, over time, but I don't use >RCS yet.

If a contact appears inside WhatsApp, then that phone has WhatsApp working. That's authoritative information. However, that person may ignore WhatsApp. You can send a WA message anytime. The other phone can be off or on, the message is stored and forwarded when turned on. The WA number is always the real phone number. However, since recently you can define an alias and use that instead. If someone doesnot have whatsapp, and you try to message that person, WA will offer to send him an invitation. Speaking of which, how does signal fit in the rest of the system, is it self-contained, or does it do anything like wanting to be the default contacts app or the default messaging app? Does it need more than its own contact store? You can give it access to your Contacts app. If you do (or better: before you do this), then you can choose to /not/ let people automatically know you're using Signal. I think you still need to give up your phone number to install it, but then you can hide it and use usernames only. -- s|b

Hi Nuno, I don't use Signal, so I had to look this up for you on contacts. <https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/9932632052378-How-to-protect-yourself-on-Signal> Given most people are incredibly rude when it comes to contacts privacy, I looked up more about how Signal can *save* contacts, which is handy. 1. You can keep your regular dialer for voice calls separate from Signal 2. Just open Signal, tap the pencil/compose icon & type a number directly That's it. Or save your Signal-using contacts in Signal's "Signal contacts" list. It's apparently a separate, Signal-only address book that never touches your system contacts. In addition, apparently there are 3rd-party keypad dialers that Signal can use on Android so that we don't have to expose our contacts, given the salt is the same for all contacts in all such VOIP apps, including WhatsApp. <https://github.com/topics/signal-cli> -- It's shocking how quickly most people throw their contacts under the bus.

I've said this statement below many times on iOS newsgroups about other, similar iOS trolls, who simply can't stand (nor ever understand) the facts. "Just you claiming every fact you're blissfully ignorant of is wrong does not mean you've debunked facts merely by repeating your religious belief system that all facts you're unaware of or you refuse to understand, are wrong". The fact remains that both Andy and I provided facts. I even provided settled court cases, which are additional facts. You provided..... nothing. Please, if you're going to troll us by disputing known facts, at least provide a valid counter factual that backs up your religious position. Otherwise, you're just trolling... -- It's shocking how readily people sacrifice their contacts when convenient.

Hi Nuno, Carlos is trolling. The facts prove it. It's really simple, and we've dealt with it on the Apple newsgroups forever since they own purely religious belief systems, which can't be defended. Notice two very important facts about the conversation with Carlos: 1. I provided facts (court cases, cites, Android technical documents) 2. Carlos provided nothing (not a single fact, not a single cite, nothing) Yet, Carlos clearly denied every single fact that I had provided. He didn't give me a chance to discuss his counter argument, as he had none. Carlos simply claimed every known fact presented about contacts, is wrong. I won't let that religious belief system stand in this technical newsgroup. There's the entire issue, in a nutshell. -- Of a million things people should know about privacy, most know 3.
