To tie Andy's suggestion of

Luckily whomever authored that thread was intelligent enough to add
keywords galore, which, I know, Andy once said made the subject long. :)

Let's pop this message-id into Andy's suggested link...

It worked.
 <https://usenet.id/vtnhos$1jn3$1@nnrp.usenet.blueworldhosting.com>

The problem with the message-id approach, at least that one, is that it
doesn't give the rest of the thread. It only gives us the opening post.

Let's compare with <http://al.howardknight.net/>
Drat. "HTTP Error 503.0 - Service Temporarily Unavailable"

Let's compare then with <https://newsgrouper.org/>
 [continue as guest]
 [continue]

Drat. It doesn't show the whole thread either.

I'll add a more complete test to this new thread on the search subject.

I'm not Carlos :-), but yes, with MTP (USB mode 'Transferring files /
Android Auto'), one can access /Android/data (and .../media and ./obb).

So for example Windows' File Explorer gives you access to these
folders. Albeit in Windows, this is only access *via* File Explorer, not
via a drive letter or share, but that is a Windows limitation, not an
MTP one.

Maybe because MTP does not provide all functions of file access. For
example, no random write access. It is intended to read, or write, a
full file. And if it crashes, or the cable is removed mid operation, the
disk is not corrupted, not even needs reloading.

MTP indeed has its limitations, after all, it stands for Media
*Transfer* Protocol, not access protocol.

However, it's quite possible to overcome such limitations and treat
such a file-tree as a 'drive'.

For example 'ftpuse' [1] - a 'net use' look-alike - can make an FTP
server look like a Network Drive).

FTP - File *Transfer* Protocol - has similar limitations as MTP, yet
'ftpuse' manages to make it look like a drive (with a drive letter).

So it *can* be done, but hasn't be done (by Microsoft).

FYI, I used 'ftpuse' in the old days for backup of (parts of) my
Android devices.

N.B. 'ftpuse' is not a solution the the OP's (Alan Peeling) needs
(making complete backup of his phone), because a FTP server on Android
can also not access the app-private data areas (/Android/data, etc.).

'FtpUse - Map a FTP server as a Local Disk Drive'

I have, on my tablet (in Spanish):

main cog wheel (aka settings). -> Apps -> Special apps access -> all
files access -> a list of apps appears.

Android 16.

On my Android 13 phone, that menu "Special apps access" does not exist.
But going down the list, there is an entry with a similar wording.

It seems ‘main cog wheel (aka settings). -> Apps -> Special apps access
-> All files access’ has been replaced by ‘main cog wheel (aka
settings). -> Apps -> 3 dots menu -> Special access -> All files
access’. The ‘All files access’ pane strongly suggests that GoodSync
already has access to all files. And that implies that GoodSync
Support’s theory that file access is responsible for GoodSync’s failure
to back up properly is mistaken.
All the same I hope Maria Sophia can guide me through using adb to
confirm that GoodSync has access to all the files on my phone.
