It doesn't need to be able to _access_, say, my contacts - i. e. to look 
at them - in order to be able to add another one.

(As an aside: I almost had to accept invasive cookies etc. just to 
_look_ at that page!) Yes, that page explains - always that it's to 
improve things for _me_, of course - why it needs access to all these 
things. As you say, scary!

Sorry I didn't notice that when I looked at the page because:

In Windows I use Firefox with 3 browser extensions:

-Javascript Toggle On and Off
-Remove Cookies button
-StopAll Ads

That page loads fine with those extensions active, nothing moves, no 
ads, and I can immediately push-button the cookies gone if I want, 
though it's usually unnecessary since I have the browser set to remove 
cookies, history, etc when closing.

In Android Firefox I just use the Javascript toggle on/off add-on. When
closing the browser it also deletes cookies, history, etc.

In Windows Firefox if a page balks and I still want to see it, I can
toggle the extensions on/off using top of the page push-buttons. In
Android Firefox the on/off control is in the drop down menu.

I use a different browser if I want it to keep a history and remember 
cookies. (Like passwords for non-sensitive sites and a trusted browser 
for sensitive sites.)

No, but it can improve the typing/prediction accuracy if it can look-up 
the names of your contacts, rather than only use its internal dictionary.

  Hmmm! So that's Catch-22: The normal way to install something is to
use the Play Store app on the phone, but you can not use that, because
you have no keyboard to type the app's name into the Play Store app.

  If you can USB-connect your phone to your computer and copy files from
your computer to your phone, then the easiest way to solve this is to
get the app outside the Play Store / Google Play and to 'side-load' it.

  To get the app:

  Select the oldest version ("Requires Android: Android 4.0+"), so
you're sure that it will work on your old Android version:

  The filename will be:
  
'Gboard the Google Keyboard_v4.0.21203.1613964_apkpure.com.apk'

That setting is probably under Settings -> Security.

  Don't worry about the "unknown" qualification, it just means *any*
source other than Play Store / Google Play.

  I use the Apkpure site all the time and consider it to be very safe.

no, that's not the easiest way.

the easiest way is use a browser on a laptop/desktop computer to visit
the play store (log in if necessary), choose whatever apps and they
will auto-push to the phone.

another option is pair a bluetooth keyboard with the phone.

it is not. it's multiple steps and a potential security risk, and may
not even work, as there is a more serious problem lurking.

missed that, but he should find out why that doesn't work. sometimes
the download is delayed for a short time (usually less than an hour at
the most), and forcing a refresh on the phone will cause anything
pending to download.

however, there appears to be a much bigger problem going on, since
there should never be a situation in which there is *no* keyboard at
all. something is clearly wrong, which means sideloading another
keyboard might not help.

bluetooth keyboards and mice are extremely common, but in the unlikely
event he does not have one, one can easily be obtained, even if only
temporarily. certainly he knows someone with one. 

or, use a usb keyboard, which should work on nearly all android
devices, although that will probably need a less easily found adapter.

however, as i said before, it looks like there's a bigger problem.

That's my puzzle. I will admit I tried "crashing" various app.s, 
ignoring the warning that other things might not work if I did that, but 
I'd have expected a power-down cycle of the 'phone ought to restore 
something like the keyboard.

I've now got three keyboards - Swiftkey, simple big, and gboard - all of 
which were loaded as 'Push', no need for sideloading.

No sign of original built-in keyboard there. The only keyboards I have 
are the three I've installed (via the PC) as app.s.

(Obviously, I'm unlikely to keep all three of those - I'll decide which 
I like best. Presently a toss-up between Simple Big - because of its 
sensible size - and Swiftkey. [Even Simple Big seems to be doing some 
prediction, so maybe that function is separate from the keyboard itself, 
since I can't see 64K holding much of a dictionary.])

As it happens, I did have another couple of keyboards - the Swiftkey one 
(54.86MB under Apps), and Simple Large Button Keyboard (64.00KB).

As for those who said "just use a PC and let the system 'Push' the app. 
to your 'phone": you are both right. Frank is right that I tried that, 
last night, and it did not seem to work. A few minutes after the PC 
screen showed Installed, the little white down-arrow started flashing in 
the line at the top of the 'phone screen, which previously has meant 
that a 'Push' is happening - but the gboard app. was still not listed on 
the 'phone, some minutes after the flashing had stopped.

But this evening, it _is_ there, and selectable as an input method. It's 
a hog, mind - 65.16MB - ridiculous for a keyboard, given that that can 
be done in 64 KB (see above).
