$55 plus taxes and fees for 2GB of data? OMG. In my area, the taxes and
fees add about another 20% so that plan would be $66 per month.
For $20.75 per month (taxes and fees included), you can get 2GB of LTE
data, unlimited low-speed data, plus the usual nationwide (US) free
roaming and unlimited talk and text, on Verizon's network

However there are caveats:
1. You have to pay for a whole year of service at once to get that
price but even the 30 day plan is only $30 per month

2. No international or domestic roaming
3. No Wi-Fi calling (yet)
These were caveats I could live with because:
1. The cost savings are enormous by paying for a whole year at
once.
2. I use either global SIM cards or country-specific SIM cards when
traveling outside the country and Verizon's native coverage is
so pervasive that it's extremely rare I would ever need to roam
domestically
3. Using Google Voice you always have Wi-Fi calling (though you
would not be getting incoming calls to your cellular number).
They don't throttle data (until you reach your high-speed limit). I just
checked and I got 63.0 Mb/s down, 28.5 Mb/s up.
VoLTE calling works, but you have to contact RedPocket to turn it on.
Actually it can be less than $20.75. eBay periodically has 15% off sales
so you could get it for $17.64 per month.
Amazon also sells RedPocket and is an even better deal (but no 15% off
sales).
For $255 per year you get 3GB of LTE data, unlimited low-speed data,
plus the usual nationwide (US) free roaming and unlimited talk and text,

Verizon service. So you have to either pay for a phone in full or
finance it through Apple or Samsung or other direct seller if they exist.

The reality is that since you've been with Verizon since the days of AMPS you're pretty safe in committing to 12 months of service considering the enormous cost savings. You're currently paying $37.50 plus taxes and fees per line, so it's probably about $45 per line (it would be more in my area where taxes and fees are about 23% but I used 20%). 2GB on RedPocket is as low as $17.64 per line so you're spending about $27 more per line per month, or about $657 more per year for two lines. As much as you may like Verizon as a company, that's $657 a year that you might be able to put to better use.

I put together a spreadsheet on this which may help you. Actually I was wrong, sorry. I was comparing the Verizon 2GB shared data plan which you have, to 2GB-3GB each line on RedPocket. Your savings would actually be greater than I originally stated with the RedPocket 1GB/line plan. If you paid RedPocket yearly, and took advantage of the periodic 15% discounts, your savings for two lines would be $782 per year, $65 per month, $2.14 per day. If you paid RedPocket every 90 days, and didn't take advantage of the periodic 15% discounts, your savings for two lines would be $520 per year, $43 per month, $1.43 per day. I did not do any comparisons to the cost of soda. While this data will be of no interest to you, others may be interested in the comparison. It was driving stores like Radio Shack crazy. Sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s this law was changed. Without subsidized phones the cellular industry would never have flourished the way it has. I think that one thing that has really also helped is the fact that "in the olden days" people were spending quite a bit of money each month on "long-distance" calls, but when the cell phone industry did not distinguish between local and long distance it helped mitigate the cost of having a mobile phone, along with not deducting minutes for "in-network" calls. I also recall when people in my area were driving to Sacramento to buy phones and service because AT&T began offering included nationwide roaming on their "AT&T One Rate" plan, while the Bay Area carriers, Cellular One and GTE Mobilnet, were not including roaming. AT&T was upset about this because people with the non-local phones were roaming almost 100% of the time. It's always good to have a large phone selection to choose from (says one who bought a $600+ phone from Verizon). In my case the Motorola's shatterproof screen sold me. I had/have a bad history with screens. So far this phone has saved me hundreds. I'm past the two year mark now and if I keep it long enough, and drop it enough, maybe it eventually will save me enough to be a free phone... ;)
