I used to use mainly navigation programs like CoPilot and OSMAND since they store maps locally, and don't rely on a constant data connection. But now I really like Waze in urban areas. But on one of my longer drives, that I do at least 5 times a year, Waze is invaluable because there are so many things happening on that route (San Jose to San Diego). nospam is just pushing your buttons. There is just no way that he is as clueless as his posts make him appear.

In a strange area you wouldn't know the stations to listen to even if they provided that service. And in many parts of my state there are no local stations. YMMV. I usually use Google. Having been to Disneyland many times over the years I know my route well. When Google routed me differently one time I thought I knew better. About 30 miles down one of the freeways I usually take it turned out to be closed for the next 60 miles or so. I backtracked and took Google's route. Google seems to be pretty up on local traffic problems.

Waze is the best crowd-sourced app I've ever seen. It constantly updates the suggested route as traffic conditions change. It can be rather amusing when you see a long line of cars exiting the freeway and taking a side road since you know that everyone is following the same Waze guidance. Radio traffic reports are far less helpful than Waze even in your own local area. In an area where you don't know all the roads, it's orders of magnitude more helpful. Try going through L.A. county, on the way to San Diego sometime. Waze won't keep you on I-5 or I-405, it will route you on several less congested freeways, I-210, CA-57, CA-71, CA-91, I-15, unless there are issues with those routes, then it will select something else. The "Time in traffic," "object on road ahead," "pothole," etc. warnings are also very useful. The best GPS is now a 7-10" tablet, either with LTE data or hot-spotted into a phone. A large phone is also okay, now that 5.7"+ phones seem to be the norm, with 6"+ phones also becoming more common. I think that one reason that Apple is so late with larger phones is that they think that someone with a 6.5" iPhone may not be too interested in an iPad Mini. When traffic congestion isn't a concern, or when you're in an area with no cellular coverage, or out of the country, a small tablet with an app like CoPilot or OSMAND, is wonderful, just be sure that your tablet has a GPS (the non-LTE iPads don't have one, though you can use a Bluetooth GPS adapter).

A few minutes of reports every 10 to 15 minutes can't begin to cover a 25m x 25m grid of streets. > In an area where you don't know all the roads, it's orders of > magnitude more helpful. I always try to scope out the trip before leaving. I suppose because I hate to rely entirely on the electronics. A few years back on a trip to Big Bear Lake Google routed me onto a dirt forest road. It's helpful to know which freeway lane to be in for an upcoming turn. I hate last minute maneuvers. > The best GPS is now a 7-10" tablet, either with LTE data or > hot-spotted into a phone. Both my cars have dash GPS (among other functions) screens. So I usually just keep an occasional eye on it while Google is talking to me from the phone (or the car speakers using Bluetooth or a cable). And the wife's iPad Pro is usually available for a hotspot in the copilot's seat if I can tear her away from reading her romance novel... :-/ > When traffic congestion isn't a concern, or when you're in an area > with no cellular coverage, or out of the country, a small tablet > with an app like CoPilot or OSMAND, is wonderful, just be sure that > your tablet has a GPS (the non-LTE iPads don't have one, though you > can use a Bluetooth GPS adapter). I own CoPilot. Bought it a few years ago. I find I like Google better these days. YMMV.

Here if you set it for Traffic Announcements it cuts to a local station's traffic news regardless of what other station you're currently rubbed into. After the traffic announcement it takes you back to your previous station.

So I have not tried the RDS system and don't know if any FM stations are even using it. However the core city being the 6th largest in the USA I would be surprised if it wasn't in use. On my trips to the coast I pass several mountain ranges so FM stations fade in and out making such a system (if it exists in the desert towns) likely unreliable. However Interstate 10 is covered in cell towers. So that's why I find traveling with Google helpful, it's always available. I am going to try Waze though when checking it out I find that it is a Google subsidiary. I wonder if any info is passed between the systems...

LOL, this is why I'm suspicious that he is a sockpuppet, created by our favorite nymshifter (Arlen Holder, etc.). You may be right but I think his problem is that he keeps getting himself stuck in lines of argument which, even though he realises he's made a boo-boo, he just can't back down from. It's a kind of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Those people crop up a lot on the internet because they can't function in normal society. Nobody would tolerate their nonsense if you had to interact with them in person, so they live their social lives hidden away behind a computer screen. They generally do jobs which don't require much personal contact with other human beings. Nospam often comes back with responses within minutes of them being posted, so it's obvious he sits around constantly scanning the newsgroup just waiting for the chance to come back in and have another go. It's quite weird.

Not to mention that "calls and text will still work [with wifi]" is BS, because it doesn't mention what additional stuff/setup is required to let SMS and phone calls work via Wi-Fi. And some of that 'stuff' isn't available worldwide. But heh, if it works in nospam's (US) city dweller's bubble, it can't be a problem, can it!?

What you want to do is to see incoming calls while roaming internationally, then call the number back using a local SIM card. The other good alternative is, before you leave, forward your U.S. number through, to a service like Localphone, Then when you know your foreign SIM phone number, log onto Localphone and forward the Localphone number to your local SIM number. > And world travelers don't need someone who has probably never left his > home country telling us how we should muddle through with workarounds > that don't provide adequate solutions. True. Exceedingly foolish suggestions, from people that lack adequate knowledge, seem to be routine for the poster you are referring to!

There's more to the world than just the US. The US represents less than 15% of smartphone users in the world.
