#34901 — How to *really* disable updates?

FromChris Green <cl@isbd.net>
Date2016-09-28 19:49 +0100
SubjectHow to *really* disable updates?
Message-ID<puftbd-0qs.ln1@esprimo.zbmc.eu>
I have a Motorola Moto E, it works fine but has ,i,ited memory. To
conserve memory I want to disable updates on all the built-in apps
that I don't use (most of them).

I've tried 'Uninstall Updates' followed by clearing 'Show
Notifications' but it seems that these get overriden and I still keep
getting downloads updating apps that I don't want updated.

Is it possible to stop these updates?

Check your keyboard -- the comma lies just under the L key, and just to the
right of the M key, so a slightly errant finger can easily hit it in error.

Forgive yourself, as we too forgive you :-) . Cheers, -- tlvp

You don't have a M key?

Don't be daft. Do you think I used some website to copy and paste the
word "comma" ? Of course not.

There's no comma next to my M key. The key next to my M key is % ù ´
I have an AZERTY keyboard, that was my point.

I know. It shows that we Flemish are still oppressed by the Walloons.
Though I started with QWERTY with a Commodore 64, but somewhere along
the way I switched to AZERTY... (and I don't want to switch again :-)

Okay, if you are happy with it.... I used
always QWERTY and don't want switch too.

Turn off auto-updates globally in the play store. Then only update
apps you want.

Aha! Thank you. Maybe I'll get some peace from all those updates now!

I just checked and mine is set that way, so, here's the settings so that

You can also 'disable' the apps you can't uninstall, which has the
effect of removing any updates already installed for them as well as
clearing an data storage used by them and stopping them from being
updated in future. Use your phone's 'Settings - Application Manager' to
do this.

This is where I (OP) came in! :-)

Does 'disable' save any more space than just 'Uninstall Updates' and
clearing 'Show Notifications'?

The key difference is that it stops that app from having any more
updates offered for it. It also stops the app from being run. It's the
next best thing to 'uninstall', for apps that you aren't allowed to
uninstall. The 'disable' option appears in the user interface where
'uninstall' appears for normal apps.

So what does 'Uninstall Updates' plus clearing 'Show Notifications' do?
I thought they'd do what you describe for 'disable'. One would expect
'disable' to also prevent the app from being run. When you uncheck
'Show Notifications' the warning message says you will miss updates so
I assumed that it would stop an app being updated.

What it says, I imagine. Next time the app checks for updates it will
get them all, and won't tell you.

I'd assume you'd get the updates without notice.
