#34705 — Nexus 7 (2013) Updates

FromTim <timothybil@yahoo.com>

SubjectNexus 7 (2013) Updates
Message-ID<XnsA68D2E53C62Atimothybilyahoocom@216.166.97.131>
I noticed that I have not received the September security update on my
Nexus 7 (2013). I am assuming that means that it has reached the end of its
supported life as far as Google is concerned. Has anyone else with a Nexus
7(2013) received that update?

If we are truely at end of support, what are your plans going forward?
Right now I am just staying with what I've got so far. I am thinking about
moving to Cyanogenmod when they start integrating the new Android features
into their build. Since I like the 7" form factor, and it continues to meet
my needs, I am not planning on doing a hardware upgrade for a while. But it
will be interesting to see if Google comes out with a Pixel 7 next month.

But if you look further, you will see that security updates will be
provided for three years or 18 months after Google stops selling them. I
guess my question is does anyone know when Google stopped selling them?

I also wanted to see if anyone else HAD received the update, which would
mean a problem at my end.

The last security update was Aug 5, 2016. Believe that may be the last
update for the Nexus 7, 2013.

Did read on the XDA forum for the Nexus 7 that the 2013 version got the
Marshmallow as a "freebie" as it was past support stage; something
about that it was just over the 2 year timeframe.

Someone has started/compiled a Nougat system (alpha) for the Nexus 7
but it wasn't Cyanogen & so I'll wait...

I suggest you wait a little bit longer. Lots of users, myself included,
are having WiFi and Bluetooth problems after the update to Nougat. An
"issue" has been opened:
<https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=221056>

but it's set to 'Priority-Small' and it looks like Google is doing f*ck
all to solve this problem.

About, Android security patch level shows 5 August 2016 here.

If the iPad mini were a little smaller I might get one of those, but I'm
now finding that my Moto G3 phone is enough, as it has a reasonable
camera and I now have a reasonable data plan. If I need something
bigger and portable, a Linx 10-inch Windows tablet with real USB ports
and removable keyboard might suffice. The Linx is a fraction of the
price of an iPad.

No thanks on Apple. I have had the experience of trying to host an Apple
device on a Windows PC, and don't want to do that again. There is no
doubt that Apple sells great gear, but to really use it to its full
potential, one must drink the koolaid, and buy into the whole
infrastructure. I have always liked the Mac GUI, and my first PC was a
color Mac Plus, but I have too much invested in my current Windows system
to want to switch now, even if I could afford it. If when the time comes
there is not a good successor, I will look at the 6" and 10" devices to
see what might work for me.

what does that even mean? apple devices do not need to be 'hosted'.

nonsense.

What do you back up to? Last I heard it was thru iTunes, and Apple no
longer supports iTunes on Windows. If there is some other way to back it
up please tell me.

Steve Jobs himself said everything was designed around the Apple
Experience, IOS on the iPhone and OSX on the Mac. Everything is designed
to work together like an interlocking machine. Here is an example: To
back up an iPhone one needed iTunes, yet iTunes is no longer supported on
the Windows platform. What are those who were doing that supposed to do
now?

No, you don't 'have' to, but it works a whole lot better, without a lot
of aggravation if one does.

where the world did you get that idea???? itunes is fully supported on
windows 7 and later.

as for backing up, ios devices can back up to icloud or itunes or both.
it's up to the user.

icloud backups are convenient while itunes backups are faster and with
a local copy. many people use both methods, as they each have
advantages for different reasons.

some apps also have their own backup options independent of the
underlying os, such as dropbox, google docs, etc. with such apps, you
can use any device, whether it's ios, android, mac or widows and access
the same data.

they're obviously designed to work together because by doing so, they
can offer features that other companies can't. however, that doesn't
mean they don't interoperate with other systems.

ios devices work perfectly fine with windows systems.

other companies do the same thing. for instance, a samsung gear watch
works best with samsung phones, and originally, it *only* worked with
samsung phones.

nikon flashes work better with nikon cameras, versus sunpak or other
flashes, who have to reverse engineer the signaling and may not get
everything right. also, nikon is the only company who knows the exact
specs of their sensors, while adobe and others have to empirically
determine that and therefore the results are often considered to be not
as good. so while you can use any app you want to process images, the
'best' results are with nikon's own software (or canon for canon
cameras, sony for sony cameras, etc.).

> Here is an example: To
> back up an iPhone one needed iTunes, yet iTunes is no longer supported on

they need to realize that they're grossly uninformed.

seriously, where in the world did you get the idea that itunes wasn't
supported on windows?

of course.

obviously things work better when all products are from the same maker
because features can be added that aren't available from other makers.
