In addition to Bob...

SMS (and call logs), backup? Well if you need it, I use this app...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?
id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore

If your phone is well "cloudised", everything should come back nicely.

If you've ever changed your default Launcher, make a note of that too.
And get that back on early, and things will start looking familiar
quickly.

thank you

I screenshotted each of my desktop screens

then I saved everything I wanted to the sd card
mostly that was screenshots pictures videos and music
I did not need my sms messages or my mail
I backed up all the user installed app apks too
then I powered down & removed the sd card & sim card
then I ran the full factory reset

then I put back the sd card and sim card
first I found the default preinstalled file manager
using that default file manager I found my apks
the first apk I brought back was my launcher
the next apk was a better file manager! LOL
one by one I installed all the old apks

then I put them back following the original screenshots

thank you!

BUT... what about configuring your apps?

good question
I did not think of that at all

thinking now about it
I don't think any apps are configured other than email

the email was set when they asked me for my google play account
so what else is there to configure?

I left the launcher at its defaults
I snapped a photo of the blue sky for a background

Everything works without configuration

the camera works without configuration
the music player works without configuration
the flashlight works without configuration
the sms works without configuration
the phone works without configuration
the maps work without configuration
the voice recorder works without configuration
the calculator works without configuration
even youtube works without configuration

what do I need to configure?

Apparently nothing.

I have 4 email accounts, 2 mail programs, a number of logins for banks
and other institutions, file locations, LOTS of options for my GPS apps,
and that's enough to keep me going for half a day. This stuff is NOT
included in backups, and it's the most troublesome.

I've done three factory resets so far, each was traumatic and I lost
stuff that I valued.

you were right
this was my first factory reset
there are a lot of settings I didn't know about

I thought it would only be little things like setting up the wifi password
and the bluetooth pin but but each time I run any program I have to set it
up again

for example I manually imported the vcard.vcf I had saved to the sd card
that gave me back my contacts

then I set up a couple of the email accounts but they were easy
for wallpaper I took a picture of the sky

the android settings menu was something I went thru one by one

a bunch of paths needed to be set
for example I set the app apk automatic backup path to the sd card

I changed a few settings in the default browser
even MMS had to be set up for my carrier in the text app but that was easy

so the setup seems to be easy but each of about 50 to 100 programs needs it

the alarms had to be reset
the shortcuts to text files had to be made again from es file explorer
sideline seems to have lost its phone number so a setup file is missing
the voice recorder needed its path set for saving files to the sd card
i had to put a shortcut to text files in the browser and video directories

probably the worst setup hassle was that all the offline maps had to be
downloaded again so I need to learn how to save them before resetting

for example I had to type "ok maps" in google a bunch of times just to
download again the map tiles which I would have thought the app backup
program would have saved but it did not

all the redirected files were lost so I had to figure out where to redirect
the files again so that they are saved by the apps onto the main memory and
then instantly moved to the sd card

so it was more traumatic than I thought it would be because each of the 50
to 100 programs had to have its settings checked and reset and about 25 of
the programs needed their data replenished

you would think the backup program would have saved all that ahead of time
but it did not save any of that stuff

This seems like a major defect in Android, and I was really shocked when
I discovered it. We ought to be able to mirror the entire installation
to a computer subdirectory, and just feed all or parts of it back when
needed.

I copy my entire linux partition to another one every couple of weeks,
and if the one I'm using gets broken I can boot into a backup or restore
broken files from the backup. I haven't had to do that very often, but
it's a nice way of upgrading my system -- run a backup, update the
backup and play with it for a while to make sure everything is OK before
using the original partition for a new backup.

Not enough space to do that on a phone, but running a complete backup to
a computer surely ought to be possible.

"backup"....unless that was a COPY (_NOT_ "image), it cannot be used
as-is. So if everything else gets trashed, you are SOL.
