I made a suggestion based on the information you gave me.

Your words. I (wrongfully) assumed that was the only thing that was
important to you. Only now are you speaking of web and mail and GPS.
That's not my fault, is it?

The way to do that is to say, If I were in your shoes, I'd get a
flipphone. Not to tell me how I would be better off.

Who started the thread and what is the thread about? I did, about
using a map program.

I usually buy phones around $200 but it takes brains to find a good
price:performance 16GB phone at that price.

Two or so years ago I paid $350 from T-Mobile for an unlocked Nexus 5, but
the Google Play store had it for $300.

I only bought it from T-Mobile because they gave me full credit for the
previous phone that I had.

One nice thing about App Ops Starter freeware is that it will tell you when
the permissions were last used.

For example:

But what about what I pposted, that since ver. 4.4, Android won't
display most or all of the information that App Ops something
displayed. I forget the details but it's in one of my posts in this
ng, maybe this thread.

Nexus 5X doesn't show the date, but it can show which permissions are
allowed or not.

WADR if it wants to tell me where Yellowstone Park or the Marianbad
spa is, that's great, but it doesn't need to know who my friends are,
what their numbers are, or where they live. If I can't find them,
I'll call and get directions.

After the fact even. That sounds great. Going to do it now.

(And I don't have any contacts in the phone yet, so in a way, it won't
be after the fact.)

Hmmmm... I'm on Android 4.3 and my App Ops Starter app is old like all my
aps ('cuz I don't update 'em unless I must) but it works just fine.

I do have an automatic backup of the APK because I also have "App Backup"
freeware, which saves all the APKs of all the files installed so that you
can use them again (even on other similar phones).

App Backup freeware says my App Ops Starter freeware is version 1.1.0 and
it was installed in 2014, and I *never* update my apps unless I absolutely
have to (for good reasons - generally they get worse over time).

Ignore my reply to your other post. I didn't know where this post of
mine was, or that you had answered it.

He wasn't saying that a newer app would help, just that a newer
Android will keep any such app from working. I went there to install
that app, but the update made it seem like it wasn't worth the effort.
I looked at one or two similar apps and I forget the details but they
were not encouraging. I know nothing about this otherwise.

I wouldn't bother updating either. Heck I used XP until the HDD
broke last fall, and my version of Eudora was written 10 years ago.

I saw those blurbs about App Ops Starter not working on certain newer
unrooted Android operating systems.

However, I also thought I saw blurbs elsewhere that said that the newest
Android operating systems come with the functionality of App Ops Starter.

Does anyone know more about this?

The functionality that App Ops Starter provides should be part of the OS
anyway.

Is the functionality part of the OS in the "newer" Android versions?

Not me, except to say that bad information is possible from either
side. Maybe I should install it and see if it works, but I hate
having software in that doens't work.
