As you know, I *am* interested in buying a phone for an August birthday as a gift for a child would *love* an Apple iPhone. If I choose a baseline as an iPhone 6s as the iPhone to get her, what *one* Android phone would you suggest I compare with that iPhone that is the *closest* possible to a one-to-one feature comparison. Note I'm not asking about price (that will be easy to determine based on your selection); so I'm not asking for a price-to-price phone. I'm asking for the closest feature-to-feature one-to-one comparison. What one Android phone do you suggest I compare with the Apple 6s?

They're all good kids, so, while they LOVE APPLE PRODUCTS, I agree with you that they need to learn how to make intelligent decisions, some of which involve tradeoffs where they have to weigh what they get against what they lose against what they gain in price. In the prior case, they can get 2 Nexus 6 phones plus $150 in spending money - or - they can get an iPhone 6s. What do they gain in raw figures: - two phones & 150 bucks What do they lose? - fingerprint sensor & a "better" camera (more video options) Of course, it's hard to compare because one is the (far more restrictive, yet probably "safer") Apple Ecosystem, while the other is the (far more open, yet, probably less safe) Android Ecosystem. PS: I'm still waiting for nospam (or anyone who is actually open minded) to suggest the *closest* Android phone to the iPhone 6s to make this comparison to in terms of raw specs. It's not easy to find the closest phone but it's really easy to find phones that aren't the closest.

You have to figure out what's important to her, which is probably
different from what's important to you.
I'm in the throes of converting from 32-bit slackware 14.2 to 64-bit
14.2. What's NOT working is Picasa, which really runs under wine.
We've installed the stuff that allows running 32-bit programs, but it
doesn't seem to be perfect. Since Picasa is what I've been using to
edit/share photos since 2007 I'm not happy at having to switch to
something else. The switch from picasaweb to google photos is traumatic
enough. Christ, I may have to learn GIMP! More complete, less
user-friendly. Did I mention I want EASY? And then there's google
earth, another problem even in my 32-bit system(s) and always requiring
some sort of stupid tweak to get it to run.
Hubby doesn't do photos and isn't really interested in google earth
aside from its initial novelty a couple of years ago. FEH!

Maybe being able to take a selfie is her big thing. Or the pokemon
thing that people are playing with now.

You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that kids need to learn value. Just like I learned FAR more about Android and phone specs by trying to get a 4GB phone to work, you learn nothing if you start with the most expensive phone that money can buy. That phone does everything, and, just like the NFC antenna in my batteries that I never use, the most expensive phones are jam-packed full-to-the-brim with useless features to fluff out a marketing list somewhere. The trick, as you also noted, is to find the features you care about, and then get *them* for the best value for your dollar. That will never happen with iOS. It will never happen on the most expensive Android phones either. That's why nospam keeps comparing them - because that's the *only* way the Apple Ecosystem can be artificially made to seem to come out anywhere near even against the Android Ecosystem. > I'm in the throes of converting from 32-bit slackware 14.2 to 64-bit > 14.2. What's NOT working is Picasa, which really runs under wine. Wine. Ug. I swore off Wine years ago. It crashes and then you do the insanity thing. Run it twice. It works the second (or third time). Go figure. That's a known workaround. > Hubby doesn't do photos and isn't really interested in google earth > aside from its initial novelty a couple of years ago. FEH! I do a lot of backcountry hiking. Google Earth is great for planning routes, especially since I don't use trails, where chaparral (which is nearly impenetrable stuff) is easy to see in Google Earth and impossible on a normal topo map. > Maybe being able to take a selfie is her big thing. Her previous two were in the Wild West of the free open Android Ecosystem, and now she will try two years in the barbed-wire fenced in Apple Ecosystem. I doubt she'll even notice the difference because she's a kid. She'll just be happy that she has what every other kid has. That's fine. Sage wisdom will come with experience.

You're the one who started to compare on a feature-list basis if I may remind you. nospam just tried to make that comparison one between apples and apples, and not one between apples and pears. And rightfully so. If you don't like the Apple ecosystem (and apparently have hardly any clue about it), why do you keep coming back on it? Simply ignore it and live happily ever after. Hi Michael, I respectfully understand your sentiment, but if you never fixed a motor on a car, then changes are you've never learned how to fix the motor of a car. If you've never had to build a fire without matches, then you probably haven't learned all that much about building a fire sans matches. And, if you've never done any winter camping, you haven't learned a dozen tricks that it takes to better handle winter camping. Same thing goes here. If you've never had to make 4GB work to store *more* than 4GB of programs, then you probably haven't learned all that much about how Android stores and runs programs. > They might be useless for you, but for others they're important. If you > disagree, please tell me one feature of a top-class phone *nobody* > needs. And I literally mean nobody! Unlike you, I'm reasonable. Nobody can find a feature on a high end phone that *nobody* can use. I can't either. I'm not God. For example, I never use NFC on my own phone - but I'm sure plenty of other people do. So what matters in any price:performance comparison is a comparison of the performance features that matter, to you. For example, if I did want NFC, I would likely want NFC to work with *all* others - not just Apple Pay. However, if someone else is ensconced 100% within the walled garden, I can easily see that they might not care that Apple NFC might not work outside the walled garden. Unlike you, I have the ability to understand that other people care about different things (and that's OK). What's not ok is lying about the features just to protect your Apple image. > That's a reasonable approach. Why don't you take it then for this case > as well? ;-) I did. And rightfully so. There's nothing wrong with nospam's choice, except that he made it purely on price reasons. He took the most expensive set of phones and compared them to the most expensive set of phones. That seems reasonable, to many (dumb) people too. So I don't fault his logic because it's dumb logic. I fault his logic because it's not a "real" comparison. A real comparison of price:performance *chooses* the phones based on *both* categories. Price is the dumbest of categories (which is why nospam chose it). I chose performance to make the comparison of what's essentially equal. For essentially the same performance (the Nexus 6 beats the iPhone 6 on things that don't matter all that much to him and the iPhone 6 beats the Nexus 6 on things that don't matter to me), the Nexus 6 is less than half the price of the iPhone 6. What nospam wants to prove is otherwise, but he uses a dumb method to prove that. He uses price alone and ignores comparable performance. The intelligent trick is to find the performance that matters to you, and compare that, and when you find the two phones that meet your criteria - then (and only then) you look at price. > If you don't like the Apple ecosystem (and apparently have hardly any > clue about it), why do you keep coming back on it? My biggest concern is *understanding* why the Apple Apologists are an irrational group who will lie to protect their product line. You don't see me lying to protect Android, do you? I don't even like Android (it's a royal mess). It's far more open than is iOS; but I won't lie to protect it. Why do the Apple Apologists lie so much just to protect their image? (Is image all they care about?) ? You're anyways just following your > settled opinion that Android is always better and (i.e.) cheaper. You clearly have a closed mind. I don't even like Android. It's far better than iOS for open ness, and it's far worse than iOS for privacy. It's far better than iOS for price, and it's far worse than iOS for simplicity. It's far better than iOS for flexibility and it's far worse than iOS for reliability. I simply have an open mind. You Apple Apologists seem to have a closed mind. But, I do THANK YOU for your post because I just realized WHY you Apple Apologists have such a closed mind such that you feel you must lie to protect Apple's image. > Stick > to it, that's perfectly fine with me (and certainly most others around > here). No need to keep coming back for confirmation (which you won't get > the way you want to have it, as the world is not black and white, but > many, many shades of grey). What I'm trying to understand is WHY you Apple Apologists lie to protect your Apple image. Why don't the Android Enthusiasts lie? We don't lie because we don't care to protect the Android image. Android sucks for lots of things. Apple sucks for lots of things. Android is great for lots of things. Apple is great for some things. I think the difference here, is that the Apple Apologists bought Apple equipment not for price:performance reasons - but for IMAGE reasons. So, you lie to protect the image of the product image you bought into.

You're starting with the wrong (resp. completely useless) hypothesis, that there's a point in squeezing so much data (of whichever type) into such a way outdated phone. Doing so (if you succeed at all) you'll certainly learn a lot, no doubt. But, and that was my point, that's by far not the only way to learn a lot about something! If I have a 128GB phone, what particular knowledge I gained from such a 4GB nightmare would I be likely to need? Right: Nothing. However, I might need types of information you might've never gained in your 4GB ordeal, and thus I will learn things without going through the 4GB exercise. >> They might be useless for you, but for others they're important. That's got nothing to do with a walled garden, the questions are simply: 1) Do I want to pay via NFC at all? 2) Is my credit card supported by Apple Pay? 3) Do the shops I want to pay in with Apple Pay support it? IF you answer all three of the questions with yes, you could be perfectly happy with the Apple implementation - and it would've exactly nothing to do with the question whether it's a walled garden or not. > Unlike you, I have the ability to understand that other people care about > different things (and that's OK). We're still waiting for you to show this ability. So far all we read from you were rantings that things (i.e. on Apple devices) are not as *you* wanted them. No. Well, some may, but in general it's just the opposite. iOS users were open enough to understand the intrinsic logic of iOS, and to learn that it does have its advantages. You're the one not willing to accept that. If people try to tell you why (and where) the Apple approach is superior, you debunk that as lies of Apple fans. This post is getting better line by line. Further up you claimed explicitly that you're not a fan of Android (and if I hadn't known better from your past postings, I might even have believed that). Yet here you explicitly say that you're an "Android Enthusiast". You're contradicting yourself, again. > Android sucks for lots of things. > Apple sucks for lots of things. > Android is great for lots of things. > Apple is great for some things. Yet, whenever somebody dares to tell you about some advantage of Apple devices, you call him a liar. > I think the difference here, is that the Apple Apologists bought Apple > equipment not for price:performance reasons - but for IMAGE reasons. For some that's certainly true. However, you find that with Android users just as well, plus people buying Android devices simply so they can tell "I didn't buy an Apple device!" > So, you lie to protect the image of the product image you bought into. Again you call me a liar, this time not for my image, not for the image of Apple, but for the product image. You can't even make up your mind why I would be lying. And still, you haven't shown a single statement of mine, where I was lying. Anyway, that's it for me. You called me a liar on several occasions, within this single post even several times. I asked (in other posts) for an excuse, but no, instead of rethinking your ways your getting only worse. I won't answer anymore to any of your senseless postings, neither here nor in the other parts of this thread. You're clueless, you're pathetic, you're narrow-minded. Actually, that's not even coming close: your mind is so closed, I'm wondering how even a single molecule of oxygen could get in there - but perhaps it doesn't? That would explain quite a lot... Michael

Hi Michael, Remember, I buy more phones than most people buy. You'll learn a lot more about handling of a corvette if you align it yourself to reduce understeer than you'll ever learn simply pointing the thing around curves using the steering wheel. That's because I give them out as gifts. If I wanted a phone for "myself", I would buy a high-end phone. For example, I got the Samsung Galaxy SIII in 2012 or so. For "me", while price:performance always matters, performance weighs heavily over price (because I only buy 1 phone every 5 years or so). But if I'm buying a phone as a gift for a kid, then what matters is the best price:performance I can get. And, one of the early price:performance considerations is the amount of fixed internal storage. You'll learn *nothing* about internal storage price performance if you already have a 128GB phone. That's because, with a 128GB phone, you won't have *any* of the problems that you'll have with a 4GB phone. I know this because I had a 16GB phone for years, and I learned more about storage price:performance issues with the 4GB phones I tried to make work than I did with my 16GB phone. It's the nature of the beast.

I don't think your giving them out as gifts will help me learn "more about [the] handling of a corvette if I align it [my]self". But feel free to give one of them out to me -- I've always had a hankering for a 'vette. Thanks. Cheers, -- tlvp -- Avant de repondre, jeter la poubelle, SVP.

You can hang on to the incorrect assumption that there are apps in the iOS Ecosystem that aren't in the Android Ecosystem, but the plain fact is that, in essence, the app selection is about the same. Sure, there are far more apps in terms of numbers on Android, but how many calculator apps do you need? And, sure, the Apple Ecosystem restricts entire classes of apps (see previous listing of types of apps disallowed in iOS), but, most of those apps are for special uses (e.g., automatic call recording). But I always (she's grown up by now) tried to get as close as possible (while being reasonable) to her wishes. I never tried to impose my wishes on her, unless there was really a very good reason. Rather I tried to understand her reasoning behind her wishes, think about them (both from my perspective *and* hers), and then (if I still have a different opinion) argue with her. In the end we always came to a common understanding, that was both ok with her and me. At times this required creative compromises (in the sense of 'Ok, you get an iPhone if you give x€ to it'), but our kid was (and is) always sensible enough to understand good reasoning (and not just blah-blah). > You give them what they need. You're completely missing the point here: The upgrades I'm talking about are not for additional features, but for correcting bugs - i.e. security relevant ones. And if you really cared about the well-being of that girl, THAT would be one very good reason to go for the iPhone. 'For free is always better than paid'? You know that you said that that girl would rather go for illegal offers (i.e. for downloading music or films, ...) than to pay for it? Is that what you call 'well taught'? > I do realize that Apple users pay 2.5 times what Android users pay for > in-app purchases - but not these kids - even when they're on Apple > products. They are a starting point, of course.
