Google Translate :-) says this about it "install (software, especially an app) obtained from a third-party source rather than an official retailer." and gives some examples, which 'Arlen' probably won't like. And then there's Wikipedia <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sideloading>, see the "When referring to Android apps, ..." part.

The problem I have that very few usenet posers have it almost nobody is as generous with their time and energy as I am in terms of creating well-annotated screenshots of the Android device. For me, I have to have a site that I can upload the images to, that keeps them for a long time, and that others can easily see by clicking a link. It has to be free and no registration, for obvious reasons, so it has to be free and no registration for me, and for the recipient of my largesse. The problem is which site would you suggest that's better? NOTE: That's a rhetorical question as I doubt you'll find a better site. But your point is well taken that garbage may be on the page when people look at the links, but that garbage only shows up for people who don't know what they're doing (and yes, I know you know what you're doing). HINT: I've had people vociferously complain to me, in other forums, when I use those links, but it was *always" the dumbshits that complained because they were too stupid NOT to see the annoying bits. I think it's GREAT that you can add to our combined tribal experience on the Amazon devices as I've never even *seen* an Amazon or Chrome tablet! So you add to our tribal knowledge by providing your empirical assessments. I was similarly surprised when I converted Costco Windows S laptops to Windows 10 Home. It was so trivial to do that I was shocked that they give you a fifty-buck discount for buying the Windows S laptop over Win10 Home. > >> BTW, I hate that word 'sideload' as it's just normal loading, but >> people seem to use it > > Dunno why. I had a Chrome tablet awhile back. It was very very slow so I eventually gave it away. Current Chrome tablets with any power are heavy with a square case and would be very uncomfortable to hold for any length of time. The reason my Amazon tablet is my favorite is that it's lightweight, has rounded (not sharp squared) comfortable corners, wide bezels (for fat fingers), a plastic case (not ever cold or clammy), is reasonably fast, FHD for great videos, and plenty of speaker volume. BTW two movies I recently watched on it this week: Bad Day at Black Rock and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Both highly recommended. >> 'sideload' is a legitimate word. Hi AJL, I also have an old tablet, which was a Costco Samsung which I gave to an Apple owner who gave it back after a year or two, so it's mine now. :) That's in addition to half a dozen older iPads, as I use them for Google Voice, which is really neat as Google can't take it over like on Android. The Android 16 tablet I only use for NewPipe videos so I don't mess with it that much. I haven't even factory wiped it, actually, which I need to do. Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) Genre: Neo-Western / Mystery Thriller Summary: A one-armed stranger named John Macreedy (played by Spencer Tracy) arrives in the isolated, dusty desert town of Black Rock by train, looking for a local World War II veteran. He is immediately met with hostility, evasion and veiled threats from the tight-knit townspeople. Macreedy soon uncovers a dark, shameful secret that the residents are desperate to keep hidden at all costs . 2. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) Genre: Western Anthology / Dark Comedy-Drama Summary: Written and directed by the Coen brothers, this film is a collection of six distinct, standalone tales set in the American Old West. Ranging from lighthearted musical comedy and tragic romance to grim survival and eerie encounters, the vignettes explore human nature, greed, and mortality against the rugged backdrop of the frontier . -- On Usenet, kind helpful people learn from others in every single article.

Hi AJL, You're more balanced than I am, in that I have studied the iOS Apple ecosystem, and I simply can't find anything viable about it, and yet, millions of people love it.... but.... but.... but... As you know, I "ask people" why they like the iOS device, just as I ask the guy filling up next to me at Costco gas station why he's putting premium in a Honda Civic, and almost never do they actually know what they're doing. Propaganda is very effective on weak minds. >> The Android 16 tablet I only use for NewPipe videos so I don't mess >> with it that much. For posting I often switch to my Chromebook or Windows keyboard > but not always. Yeah, you do "far more stuff" on a daily basis on your tablets than I do. Most of my iPads are just "speakerphones" for Google Voice or TextNow, while my Android tablets are "tv players" for YouTube using NewPipe. Even my phone, is mostly for phone/text/camera, as I just use it to test software when the need arises (which is less and less nowadays as, well, with over 1000 packages installed, I have pretty much learned most of what I need to know about apps, although there is always more to learn. My phone, when I'm at home, is in a drawer somewhere since I interact with it over the PC anyway, so typing is trivial 'cuz I use the PC keyboard. But on the road? I can't type with my big fat Germanic fingers from the Yamnaya horsemen. > >> As it's still logged into the original recipient. > > Scary. What held me off was I think there is protection so I didn't want to make it unusable for me afterward. I need to look up how to SAFELLY factory wipe an Android that has someone else's account on it so that it doesn't think it was stolen by me. :) >>> BTW two movies I recently watched on it this week: Bad Day at Black >>> Rock and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. I get all my movies off of Pirate Bay, but generally that's for the grandkid's movies that I download to their iPads so that they have them, even as all their parents are Netflix subscribers but they're not technical enough for the most part to put them on the device for use while off net. As for me, I don't watch movies but I do watch documentaries every night. However, my favorite Westerns are, like many would say, the Clint Eastwood Ennio Morricone ones, where if you asked me for the best western ever, it would be the good, the bad, and the ugly. YMMV. -- On Usenet, old men discuss topics that they've thought about for decades.

Hi AJL,
I like that you're inquisitive about what is revealed in the wrapping paper
(especially since the gift of the largesse is actually in the article body).
I'm not an expert in Usenet headers but what I can glean from your headers,
only from what your headers report, are the following visual observations.
[Note Frank & I have had this discussion twice about what can easily be
spoofed vs what isn't as easily spoofed (e.g., part of the PATH but not the
whole PATH, & certainly some of the time stamps & certainly newsreaders.]
1. Your header identifies you as AJL <noemail@none.com> where
most newsreaders require an email, although it's usually spoofed.
2. Thunderbird 45.0 is being advertised by your User-Agent header.
That is a claim made by the client but it could be falsified.
3. It's a 32-bit Windows application running on 64-bit Windows.
4. rv:45.0 is the Mozilla/Gecko runtime version associated with
that old Thunderbird build.
5. Gecko/20100101 is largely a compatibility/user-agent token.
It does not mean the machine dates from 2010.
6. The combination of charset=windows-1252, format=flowed and
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit is consistent with the older
Mozilla/Thunderbird-era software, which doesn't tell us much,
but the MIME headers are consistent with the claimed newsreader.
7. The Date: header says the sender's claimed local time was
08:32:36 -0700. The corresponding UTC time is 15:32:36.
8. Your machine is set to the -0700 timezone offset, which, in
September, is consistent with Pacific Daylight Time (PDT)
9. The Injection-Date is also 15:32:40 UTC, only four seconds later.
That suggests the posting software/server preserved a plausible
client timestamp, though it doesn't prove the clock was accurate.
10. Your PATH (some of which can be spoofed) indicates the flow between
a. Your posting host was "a6cd7ce76502b24500f03c493873f13a"
b. Your posting account was "U2FsdGVkX1/ooDefZcb8oiDcPO2zbn2w"
c. nntp.eternal-september.org -> feeder.eternal-september.org ->
eternal-september.org -> feeder8.news.weretis.net -> weretis.net ->
nntp.giganews.com -> border-4.nntp.ord.giganews.com -> mine -> me
Summarized, you posted via an Eternal September account which then
propagated through Weretis, then Giganews, until it got to my server.
Perhaps "ord" indicates Chicago O'Hare, so perhaps the Giganews server
is located nearby, but that would be simply a heuristic wild-ass guess.
Regarding the posting host and account, I didn't bother to check Eternal
September headers, over time, but they could be static, i.e., only assigned
to you, or, perhaps they're changed every day, or every post. Didn't check.
I never bother decrypting the obfuscated posting host (i.e., your IP
address) and account, but we can see U2FsdGVkX1 which is the familiar
Base64 representation of data beginning with Salted_, which is somewhat
characteristic of OpenSSL's traditional salted encryption format.
So it does not look like a conventional SHA-1/SHA-256 hash, which, if it's
a hash that Wolfgang M. Weyand <wolfgang@eternal-september.org> (aka Ray
Banana) devised himself, is likely long ago broken by typical TLAs, which,
I realize, none of us care about, but it's something you should just know.
Likewise, your IP address (posting host) is 32 hexadecimal characters,
which looks like an MD5-sized value, but appearance isn't enough to
establish that it's MD5. As with the account, it could be Wolfgang's
obfuscated 128-bit value or simply an arbitrary identifier for you.
Note: If we look at an old post from you, we can tell if it's static.
If it's static, then changing all of the other headers will still identify
that it's you, which, I know you don't care about but it's a datapoint in
terms of understanding what a Usenet header can reveal about your location.
With respect to privacy, if the posting account is static, I can find all
your posts from the beginning of time, thru that server using that account,
and, if I cared to invest in the energy of decrypting the IP address (which
I certainly do not), then it's maybe possible to find out your IP address.
Again, I'm only telling you this to answer your question about what your
headers snitch about you, as I have no desire to hunt you down by them. :)
Note that Frank used to run his own NNTP server so he likely knows more,
and, perhaps, he'll find flaws in my analysis above, which I would welcome.

Yup, I'm on Eternal-September and have used it for awhile now. Before that aioe, And before that Giganews. Way back when in my dial-up days Usenet was included in the dial-up fee. That's how I got hooked. I actually saved money as I was a frequent thief in the ebook binary groups but later got religion when a son-in-law became a paid author. And anyway these days ebooks can be very cheap. Most of the ones I read are under $5US and some ebook series (often 5 ebooks or more) on Amazon are 99 cents. Dunno how an author can make a buck at those prices but I'm not complaining... > Perhaps "ord" indicates Chicago O'Hare, so perhaps the Giganews > server is located nearby, but that would be simply a heuristic > wild-ass guess. It says: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/45.0 The "NT 10.0" bit signifies that it's Windows 10 or 11 (they share (effectively) the same kernel, hence the same 10.0 version number). WOW64 (Windows 32-bit on Windows 64-bit) is a compatibility subsystem of the Windows operating system that allows 32-bit applications to run on 64-bit Windows systems. So your OS is 64-bit, but Thunderbird is 32-bit. The rest is all Thunderbird (not Windows) related. [...]

Most of my Android tablet toys going back to 12 already refuse to sideload my old apks (like my old Groundhog newsreader). But my favorite tablet, the Amazon HD10 with the Fire OS, an Android fork, still does. I even have (gasp) many Google apps side loaded on it. But Amazon still has control and I'm probably only one update away from disaster... 8-O

You could install them as described here: https://liliputing.com/how-to-install-old-apps-on-android-14/ This way, I managed to install several old apps in Android 14 that would not install the normal way any more (including Groundhog!), and I never encountered any problems.

Hi Siard, That's very interesting. Thanks. It has a lot of very useful information! <https://liliputing.com/how-to-install-old-apps-on-android-14/> I'm on Android 13 but I have no Google Account set up on the phone, so I get my Google Play Store apks thru the Aurora play store client. Lately I've been having to unzip APKs for normally loading (aka, sideloading) apps, but only because Google Play switched to split APKs. adb.exe install-multiple -r base.apk split_config.en.apk split_config.es.apk split_config.xhdpi.apk But your article suggests an adb switch which I had not known about. adb install --bypass-low-target-sdk-block base.apk So, for a typical split APK, combining the two commands becomes: adb install-multiple --bypass-low-target-sdk-block -r base.apk split_config.en.apk split_config.es.apk split_config.xhdpi.apk Generally I enable reinstalls and downgrades, by habit so I don't have to check versions, and I spoof the Google Play Store having installed it. So now, the universal-installer command becomes something like this... adb install-multiple -r -d -i com.android.vending --bypass-low-target-sdk-block base.apk split_config.en.apk split_config.es.apk split_config.xhdpi.apk -r allows re-installs w/o losing the application data -d allows version downgrades (so I don't have to worry about it) -i changes the installer string (for programs that care about it) install-multiple handles the split apks that are common nowadays --bypass-low-target-sdk-block overrides android 14 security policy I have Android 16 on a tablet, but I only use that tablet as a NewPipe YouTube-client viewer sans ads and video downloader, so I haven't run into this new Android 14 strict security policy yet. Thanks for that information, as I've been running into a different issue, which is a lot of apps are including Google SDKs which are forcing the play store to be in the "actual installer" field. <https://i.postimg.cc/T2gLdvrM/actual-installer.jpg> Have you solved that new problem yet for those without Google Play? <https://i.postimg.cc/Hk9YKTY6/somethingwentwrong.jpg> It "may" have to do with something called "pairip" which I haven't yet been able to figure out how it works to stop some recent Aurora installs. <com.pairip.licensecheck.LicenseActivity> -- Knowledge is best shared like Italian pizza & German beer, among friends.
