My online 100GB Google storage costs me less than $2 a month (US) so they
won't be making all that much $$ back from me. YMMV...

Hi AJL,

Yes. I understand you. Both of us have had this conversation in the past,
where the good news is neither of us is changing our stripes.

We're consistent. :)

Over a 50 year storage life, 2 bucks a month is only $1K totally wasted.
For the USA, where wealth predominates over efficiency, that's nothing.

As for "most of the buying public is like you", I can't say that, but if we
look at the fact that 60% of the phones today have the slot, I think not.

I think what's the case is in the USA, where wealth and Internet is
endemic, it's no big deal to waste money on internal & cloud storage costs.

But I think in most of the world, where the ability to waste money on
frivolous things like cloud storage & constant Internet is less than here.

Otherwise, why are most of the phones of today coming with sd card slots?

Personally, I think the real answer is that wasting money is an American
thing, where most of the world doesn't want to waste money for no reason.

Add to that the "style" issue where it seems the higher the cost of the
phone, the less chance it has of having sd slot hardware, which, if that is
true, then that alone is strong evidence that wasting money is a style
thing more so than an economic thing.

It's like having a gas guzzling car like a Ferrari.
It's more of a style thing saying "I can waste money all I want".

Which, after all, is fundamentally your basic argument, is it not?
You can easily afford to waste money. That comes out in all your posts.

In 50 years I'll be 135 years old so I'll probably not spend quite that
much. And if you actually worry about a few cents (US) a day you really
 need a better retirement income...

That's true. I do enjoy my toy's. I'm down to 2 tablets and this Chromebook
now so time for a new gadget. Maybe back to Windows again? Time will tell.
Amazon recently broke my heart with its latest update by breaking my
side-loaded Google apps on my Fire tablets so they've now gone to the
 great-grandkids. Lose-win?

Hi AJL,

My entire point is simply logic.

There's a reason that most phones today have the sd slot, and, there's a
reason that people w/o it pay through the nose to replace the feature.

It's basic MARKETING 101 that we all learned in the 1970s.

>>It's like having a gas guzzling car like a Ferrari.
>>It's more of a style thing saying "I can waste money all I want".
>

It's OK that people waste money on a Ferrari.
As long as they don't claim it's cheaper than a Honda.

It's OK when people waste their money.
As long as they realize they're paying thru the nose for that Ferrari.

Likewise, it's OK that you waste your money, AJL.
As long as you realize that you are paying thru the nose for storage.

You've told us many times that you were so desperate to replace the missing
functionality that you pay every single day of your life to get it back.

That's fine.

All I ask you to do is compare the price of three basic things:
128GB or 256GB of internal storage = ? for the life of the phone
128GB or 256GB of cloud storage = ? for the life of the phone
128GB or 256GB of sd storage = ? for the life of the phone

Like you, I have more devices than I can count, some of which are that
festugenah Apple iOS stuff, which, if you want to waste money, Apple
products are designed to force you to pay for what they didn't give you.

Interestingly, my wife just donated her pink tenth-generation iPad to a
great grandkid, so we're in the same boat that our babies' babies are
getting our stuff. :)

There's a reason I helpfully suggested you invest in a Logic class.

What's the difference in two phones, all else equal, but one has 128GB of
internal storage, while the other has 256GB of internal storage, Carlos?

Same question for cloud storage.
Same question for sd card storage.

You are making assumptions based on your opinions, and then draw
concussions. Thus, failed logic.

That's not the only difference. It also has more RAM. Plus, internal
"disk" is faster and more reliable than any external memory.

A lot of the space I need is for whatsapp, and whatsapp can not be told
to use the external card. So, the card id not useful to me.

The external card slot comes in the same position as the 2nd SIM. I need
the 2nd SIM, thus I can not use the external card.

Hi Carlos,

You'll never find me ever stating a claim that isn't logically sound.

Yet again I must ask you to invest in a basic fundamental logic class.
My assumptions are based on facts.

Your claim that 60% of Android phones having sd slots is an opinion is
patently absurd because we proved in this thread that is a fact.

Just because you might not *like* that fact, doesn't make fact an opinion.

Likewise, just because I said two otherwise equal phones doesn't mean you
can add RAM differences because the point was to compare only the storage.

What's the cost difference between phones which are equal in all but
storage where one has 64GB of storage (like mine, which is perfectly
usable) and another has 128GB of storage and another 256GB of storage.

You do not need to answer that question, Carlos. We know the answer.
Since I *did* take a class in LOGIC, I already know the answer.

It's absurd for you to claim that the difference in cost isn't appreciable.

Now, you *can* claim that the difference in storage is
 a. Faster
 b. More reliable
 c. Doesn't use a second slot
 etc.

Never for a moment ever think I'm not eminently logical in all respects.
Both internal storage and cloud storage are *different* than sd storage.

But they're both *more expensive* than sd storage, which is my main point.
They're all different. But in terms of expense, the logic is very clear.

Moot point. I can not compare what does not exist.

I did not have to compare two equal phones except for the storage size.
I compared two phones with different storage and different ram size.
That is a fact, by the way.

If I ever have to choose between two identical phones except for the
storage size, then I will tell you what I chose.

No, I do not know the answer. And has nothing to do with logic classes.

Fair enough...

Let's move on Carlos, since I can solve problems that none of you can solve
such as this archival solution I'm working on at this very moment.

The chance of you solving this backup/restore problem is likely nearly
zero, while the chance of me solving it is nearly 100% and yet, nobody has
ever solved it (to my knowledge), so it's best I invest my time on this.

 Newsgroups: comp.mobile.android,alt.comp.microsoft.windows,alt.comp.os.windows-10

If you know of any program which does what I'm solving, let me know:
 1. On Android, we create an SQL backup of the homescreen(s)
 2. On the desktop, we reproduce the folder/APK hierarchy

The result will be organized like this for every folder & every package.
 Homescreen #1, Folder #1, App #1 Package (xyz.package.com)

Let's move our energies into solving *that* venerable problem!

I had to replace around 10 SD cards over the last 5-10 years because
they just failed.

I had to replace NO phone because the internal memory failed

So for me the choice is clear - no SD card at all in the phone. I don't
want to deal with SD card failures.

Hi Carlos,

I like you.
But...

When you make absurd statements like that, you begin to worry me.
A lot...

My suggestion is you take a class in basic logic the first chance you get.

Your argument that if 3 people in the entire world say "they" never used
the slot, then, to you, for some absurd reason, that means NOBODY uses it.

Did you notice that most (if not all) those who said they didn't use the
slot also paid through the nose already to replace what the slot provides?

No?
Of course not.

Please, if you propose an argument to me, make that argument *not* absurd.
OK?

The mere fact that over 60% of today's Android phones have the slot is a
meaningful statistic as is the fact those who don't use it pay for storage.

Hi Carlos,

Logic:
 a. If most phones have it
 b. Then it's there for a reason

How is pointing out that 60% of all current/recent Android phones have sd
slots being ridiculous? They put those slots in phones for a reason.

My observation for the group is eminently logical and quite reasonable.

128GB or 256GB of internal storage = ? for the life of the phone
128GB or 256GB of cloud storage = ? for the life of the phone
128GB or 256GB of sd storage = ? for the life of the phone

Assume 7 years.
And no, you can't say the internal storage is free because it's not.

If you can make a logical argument, then let's hear your logic.

And no, people who claim to not be using sd who *also* paid through the
nose for more storage via internal/cloud methods, does not count.

It's absurd, in fact, for someone to pay through the nose to replace the
missing storage of sd cards, and then "claim" they don't need storage.

Logic:
 a. If they paid for it
 b. Then they needed it

There's a reason I ask you to invest in a basic class in elementary logic.

As you're well aware, I have over 1000 packages installed on my 64GB phone.
As you're well aware, I have a 128GB sd card on that phone. For "data".

You are well aware I get videos/image of the grandchildren nearly every day
(which I store on the external sd card but even that is filling up lately).

So, let's compare costs now, using simple logic given you know the above.

1. How much would it cost me to double my storage to 256GB with sd tech?
2. Versus, how much it would cost me to buy that storage on "the cloud"?
3. Versus, how much would it cost me to buy a whole new phone to get it?

You don't need to answer the question because the question is the logic.

Hi Carlos,

Without sd storage, people are forced to pay thru the nose to get it back.

I get it that you're butt hurt that I showed your argument wasn't logical.
So I don't mind that, in your emotional defense, you claim I'm illogical.

And yet, in your entire life, you've never heard me claim an illogical
statement, so, I simply need to repeat the basic logic of using sd cards.

It's absurd for you to claim that the difference in cost isn't appreciable.

Now, you *can* claim that the difference in storage is
 a. Varies in speed between {sd, cloud, internal storage}
 b. Varies in reliability between {sd, cloud, internal storage}
 c. Varies in Internet needs between cloud and sd/internal storage
 d. Varies in hardware needs between {sd, cloud, internal storage}
 etc.

Never for a moment ever think I'm not eminently logical in all respects.
Both internal storage and cloud storage are *different* than sd storage.

But they're both *more expensive* than sd storage, which is my main point.

Assessment:
Anyone paying more for a phone larger than about 64GB is wasting their
money given I have over a thousand packages on my 64GB Samsung Galaxy.
