A7 Pro has got Nano-SIM + Nano-SIM, same with 15C. I had never heard of
a physical eSIM, but apparantly it's a thing. A (non physical) eSIM can
be handy when you travel abroad. You could easily buy one online and you
don't have to wait until it arrives via snail mail.

Yes, I see here it's under   
  Memory Card slot microSDXC (dedicated slot)
for both 5G and 4G versions of both phones. 

This is what I hate about so many models being available.  I like
Xiaomli but if I were devoted to it I'd be very unhpappy to find these
phones had SD slots 2 days after I bought another phone, and after I
checked the Redmi Note Pro 17, 15, 14, and 13.   How am I supposed to
know that A7 Pro is more or less Pro than Note Pro.

Yes, normally.  I think the physical esim must have come later for
phones (all of them originally) which didn't have esim built-in.

A physical esim takes a slot in the tray, and if there are any phones
with only one slot these days, you'd have to take your regular sim out
and put in the esim.

For this trip, I seem to have lost the sim for the company I deal with
and they don't mail to the US.  I have to stop at a bookstore on the way
out of the airport. Probably be tired and I hope there is no line. 

But it looks like they sell esim connectivity for the same price.  IIUC
I have to get them to send me a profile, script, program, whatever to
load into the esim before I get there.  

And then there is Peru, where you need an esim or international roaming
(which did not work for my phone) or a local friend, because you can't
buy a sim there if you're not a Peruvian.  It had something to do with
stopping fraud.

No.

I'm not planning to travel abroad any time soon. Last time I did was
in 2013, when I visited Namibia and Botswana, and yes, buying a SIM to
use in each country and changing SIMs four times at the border was a
bit of a schlep, so an ESIM might be useful if I were planning to
travel, but I'm not.

Given s|b is a known troll, I suspect he's trying to intimate that the only
way "he" can consider using an sd card is as "adoptable storage", when
almost nobody uses sd cards that way. We use them as "portable storage". 

What the s|b troll is likely alluding to, by playing coy games (which prove
s|b is a troll) is if you encrypt the card, the encryption key remains on
the phone. But almost nobody bothers with encryption on sd cards nowadays.

The troll may also be alluding to the slower speed of sd cards when
enryption/decryption activities occur, but again, being a troll, he never
said why he asked the question. Trolls like s|b just want to play games.

Given the troll is just playing his troll games, let's see how he responds.

Your data would be protected and I'd expect it to run a bit slower. I'm
not sure if the storage on the Redmi itself is encrypted. AFAIK Pixel's
storage is encrypted by default (but Google probably has a key).

You wouldn't have to take out the card. Simply connect the phone to your
computer with a cable and it will act as a USB storage device.

Does one have to buy a special decrypting cable, or do all USB cables
do the trick?

Any USB-C to USB-A cable will do. I can't explain how the process works,

So if the phone dies and you want your photos, there's no way to
unencrypt them?

running *and* unlocked when connected via USB.

The data on the adoptable storage is also likely unencrypted when connected
over Wi-Fi also (and, of course, as you noted, the phone is turned on and
unlocked).

Not just USB. 

Note: I never connect the phone to USB 'cuz connecting to Wi-Fi doesn't
even need the phone to be anywhere near me when I want to use it.

Yes, it's encrypted (also on the Redmi, since this is the standard for
most Android devices for more than 4-5 years if the manufacturer wants
to license Google Play Services), no Google does not have a key.
