#36899 — Dual SIM problem with Moto G (2nd generation) in UK

FromRoger Mills <watt.tyler@gmail.com>

SubjectDual SIM problem with Moto G (2nd generation) in UK
Message-ID<ec54opF9p36U1@mid.individual.net>
I have had a '3' PAYG SIM in one slot of my Moto G2 from the outset and
various other SIMS in the other slot from time to time. Hitherto,
[except in Australia - see below] I have had "Preferred SIM for mobile
data" set to '3'.

I have just acquired a PlusNet SIM which uses the EE network and have
signed up for a monthly deal with inclusive minutes, texts and data - so
now need to use that as the preferred SIM for mobile data.

Problem is that when I select that, it kills the '3' SIM stone dead and
says "Mobile network not available" when I try to use it.

This seems to be related to the fact that in the Mobile Network Settings
menu there is an item called "Preferred network type" for each of the
SIMs. This is automatically set to 3G for the PlusNet SIM, and doesn't
provide any other options. For the '3' SIM, it's set to 2G - and greyed
out. I think this is the problem, because '3' SIMs won't work on 2G
networks. It looks as if the phone doesn't permit both SIMs to be set to
3G at the same time.

The only way I can find of getting both SIMs working at the same time is
to set the Preferred SIM for mobile data back to '3' - but that's not
what I want because that doesn't allow me to use the PlusNet data I've
paid for.

It doesn't matter which SIM is in which slot - the result is exactly the
same.

Has anyone come across this problem, and is there a solution?

[FWIW, I was in Australia recently and used a local (Amaysim) SIM in one
slot - with the '3' SIM in the other slot in order to use 'feel at home'
- and the two SIMs co-existed quite happily with Amaysim being used for
data - so I'm not quite sure what's different.]

You've nailed it. Most Chinese-designed dual-SIM phones use the same
chipset and firmware arrangement, and that usually allows only a single 3G
SIM to be active (often restricted to Slot 1). I am not aware of any way
around this as it's built into the hardware.

Yes, that sounds about right! In my case it isn't limited to Slot 1 -
but that doesn't solve anything. It gives 3G to whichever SIM is
selected for mobile data and 2G to the other one. So, if I want to use
anything other than the '3' SIM for mobile data - which I do - I'm stuffed!

I have a Moto G 2nd gen (XT1068) also. SIM 1 is FreedomPop (3 network)
as that is the only slot they support. I only use that for data at the
moment. SIM 2 is Talkmobile which I use for voice and SMS, presumably
that uses 2G only.

Yes, Talkmobile will be using 2G.

I'm not sure what you mean by "that is the only slot they support". I
think you'll find that if you swap the SIMs, FreedomPop will work ok on
3G in slot 2 and Talkmobile will use 2G in slot 1. That is, unless
FreedomPop behaves differently from other '3' SIMs.

I have the same phone, and I can use a 3G SIM in either slot - but *not*
two at the same time. As i said earlier, 3G is allocated to whichever
SIM is selected for mobile data, regardless of which slot it occupies.

When I first got the FreedomPop SIM I tried to use it in slot 2 but that
did not work. I don't remember exactly what was happening but I think
there was a FAQ or somesuch which said to use slot 1. That might have
been a limitation of the accompanying app.

There are times when I cannot get reception on Talkmobile, which is my
primary contact number. In that situation I disable slot 1 to get TM
working. I presume that is because a 2G signal is not available and
switching off FP opens up TM to 3G.

Not only Chinese.
For SONY Xperia M dual it is the same.
The other is just 2G.

And for the older Sony Xperia tipo dual (ST21a2), is it also the same,
would you know? (We've encountered a number of bizarre "can't always use
both SIM slots with two SIMs loaded unless one slot is disabled" problems.)

Thanks for any insights. Cheers, -- tlvp

My phone often reports after some time after last boot
the 2nd SIM is invalid, what can be fixed by anoother reboot only.
But I used it rarely, it was used because of my parents provider.

Thanks. A pretty clear delineation of the active/standby difference.

Of course -- that hyphen's being anally retained in that position, so that
the word you cite serves to illustrate its own meaning :-0 .

I was interested because I thought my next phone should have dual-SIM
capability so I could use my $10/year prepaid T-Mobile account in one
and a Freedompop data SIM in the other. Given that I make very few
actual phone calls, I wouldn't have a conflict. The bad part, of
course, is that there are no cheap dual-SIM phones that have external
sdcard capability.

Best Buy, however, had a Moto X Pure on sale today for $274 (or close)
with a single SIM, 64GB internal memory and an sdcard slot. Gone now,
but I at least thought about it.

Compound adjectives are always hyphenated.

Dear Contributor,
Please bear in mind that this is a UK group so:-
We use GBP not USD
The range of products in the US is probably larger and definitely
different from those available here
The prices in the UK are generally higher than in the US
Our market has a different structure and methodology to the US - for
instance we don't pay to receive calls

What is a Moto X Pure?

What is a T-Mobile $10/year prepaid account? We either pay a fixed
contract monthly amount of pay-as-you-go with limitations on the
maximum period of non-use.

Which was why I replied to all groups. Anyway what is he doing on a UK

This thread is x-posted into the US group. No idea who started it.

Perhaps it all balances out then.

> What is a Moto X Pure?

A Motorola Moto X Pure cell phone. I'm currently satisfied with my Moto
G(2) phone, but more power/storage is always nice.

> What is a T-Mobile $10/year prepaid account?

Through T-Mobile for $10US/year you get ~30 additional minutes which
keep rolling over as long as you keep buying $10 worth of minutes
annually. The plan is no longer offered, but we lucky few were
grandfathered in. I live in fear that they'll completely cancel the
plan because the next jump up is significantly more for minutes I don't
need.

Similar here, but I'd be willing to bet that there are over 100
different plans available from various providers. I just happen to have
the very cheapest one!

I did! I'm in the UK and thus posted it to uk.telecom.mobile - but also
cross-posted it to comp.mobile.android (which incidentally is
international, not just US) on the basis that Moto G2s are used in a
number of countries.

the plan is still offered, the only difference is that it now has a
$3/mo minimum because of people like yourself who keep a phone number
active yet never actually use it, which costs t-mobile money.

since most people make more than 10-30 minutes of calls (the per minute
rate can vary), that minimum is not normally an issue.

actually, you don't have the very cheapest one, that being entirely
free.

I suppose uk.t.m is a UK group. But what you respond to appeared both there
and in comp.mobile.android, which suffers no such restriction, and at least
I am responding via the latter, as I imagine was The Real Bev, as well. Do
permit us to respond in our own currencies, please, without first
converting to yours :-) . Thank you. Cheers, -- tlvp
