Steve seems to have forgotten but his original link
https://www.phonemore.com/specs/samsung/galaxy-a2-core/sm-a260f/

Says RAM: 1GB
      ROM: 8GB / 16GB*

Of course phonemore is not Samsung or Gsmarena. I don't know who pays
for it or why they have it. I don't think they're getting rich on their
advertising. For that matter, I don't know who pays for gsmarena.

As I have said before, the phonemore.com page for the Samsung A2 Core
(SM-A260F) indeed says "ROM: 8GB / 16GB*", but it *also* and very
*clearly* says:

"Memory and storage

 RAM memory 1GB LPDDR3

 Internal storage	16GB (12GB available)
			eMMC 5.1

External storage	V Until 256GB microSD, microSDXC
			(dedicated slot)"

So someone who pays a tiny bit of attention, sees that the phone has
16GB of Internal Storage. Never mind incorrect/misleading terms like
"ROM", "flash", etc..

BTW, Carlos looked at a different site (gsmarena.com instead of
phonemore.com), a different brand (Realme instead of Samsung) and a
totally different category of phone.

Right, it does, in the summary

A bit below the summary are the details:

Memory and storage

RAM memory 1GB LPDDR3
Internal storage	16GB (12GB available) eMMC 5.1
External storage	Until 256GB microSD, microSDXC (dedicated slot)

So it is not actually ROM.
They do print a lot of details in readable format, which is good.

Because "ROM" is often used as substitute for "flash memory". People
don't care if this is technically correct, they just need to understand
the difference between RAM used for running apps and any other memory
used to store apps and other data permanently.

But it can lead to misunderstandings -- it certainly did in my case.

In this case, ROM is a dumb and incorrect term. It isn't Read-Only
Memory, because it's Internal Storage, so - besides the operating system
and factory-installed apps - is stores additional apps and data. (BTW,
also part which stores the operating system and factory-installed apps
can be written/re-written, so also that part is not 'ROM'.)

  Some people/sources call it flash-memory, but I think that's a bad
term as well, because it describes the technology, instead of what it
does/is.

  Your new reference (<https://www.gsmarena.com/realme_note_50-12799.php>)
says "storage" and "Internal". Those are the normally used terms, i.e.
"Storage" and "Internal Storage".

Mine had 0.5GB ram and 0.5GB flash, I bought a 2GB sdcard and used
custom kernels to move partitions around ...

Here's an unlocked Samsung A25-5G phone, 128 GB, dual nano-SIM, or single
nano-SIM with micro-SD. Very nice camera. $250 U.S.

That's about 3x what I can afford.

It's not good that you have a choice of one phone with 128GB for under
R1500, I suppose it's better than a choice of zero ...

<https://www.bobshop.co.za/brand-new-mobicel-x9-4gb-128gb-50mp-camera-r1460/p/631201657>

You could get 64GB for about R1000, but I see the weasel words "4GB RAM
extended" which I think means 2GB of real memory plus 2GB of fake memory?

<https://www.takealot.com/hisense-e34-64gb-lte-dual-sim-black/PLID95955510>

I don't claim to know the equivalent spending power of R vs $ vs £, but
it seems the real choice begins at R2000

The one I mentioned before here:

<https://www.gsmarena.com/realme_note_50-12799.php>

is said in the ad to have 8Gb, being 4Gb + 4Gb "dynamic" RAM, whatever
that means.

It's R1900, which is about £82.37 or $US104.60

It's some kind of virtual memory trickery, not sure if it uses
compression or just pages stuff between ram and flash?

I see that constantly on my local TV news. "Download the app to
get constant weather updates." What they're thinking is that if you
download the app they can spy on you, sell that data, maybe
show you targetted ads. If you just watch TV news they know
nothing about you.
