#143926 — Android 15 update for Pixel 6

Is this update still bricking Pixel 6 phones?

On the one hand, I have been holding off on the update due to the
initial reports. My guess is that Goog is all but ignoring the problem
at this point.

On the other hand, hearing some of the other issues folks have had with
a successful update, I would be smart to continue to hold off on this one.

On the third hand, I want the new shiny.

I've not had any issue with Android 15 on my Pixel 8a, but there's not
much new shine ...

Mine auto-upgraded to 15 at some point and I didn't notice...

I don't know. At least on my Pixel 6a it works fine. But so far I did
not discover any new feature of Android 15 which is absolutely needed
for me yet.

The upgrade went perfectly on my Pixel 6a. Everything works as
expected.

> On the third hand, I want the new shiny.

There is very little visibly new. I hardly see any difference. There
are a couple new features that are mildly interesting to me but nothing
life-changing.

IOW, don't get too excited about this one. Seems to be just a very
minor refinement of Android 14.

I think Pixel6 owners just got an extra year of support life, and Pixel7
owners got two extra years ...

Today's feature drop is more noticeable than the 14->15 upgrade, mainly
in the settings app.

I read something about Pixel 6 getting upgrades to Android 17. Initially
A15 was the last upgrade and then 2 years security updates. Question is:
is the hardware going to be able to run A17 properly?

My Pixel5a didn't feel as though it was struggling when it ran out of
updates.

Obviously the latest feature drop has only just hit, but I think the
next one will bump *all* pixel 6/7/8 up to the same linux kernel 6.1
that the pixel 9 is running

According to <https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/4457705?hl=en>
Pixel 6 devices get, quote:

"(...) 5 years starting from when the device first became available on
the Google Store in the US.

This includes 5 years of OS and security updates, and may also include
new and upgraded features with Pixel Drops."

Since the Pixel 6 was released October 28, 2021, this means updates
until October 2026. There is no indication, that Android 17 will not be
supported on those devices. And since the hardware is also designed by
Google I would expect it to support Android 17 just fine. The additional
hardware requirements are usually more driven by apps which ask for more
memory and a faster CPU and not as much by the operating system. Google
may also just keep things out which are not supported well enough.
