I have a Hudl 2 Andoid (5.1) tablet with an SD card. I download epub
files from my PC to a folder on the SD card for reading, and I can see
and open these files from the PC. When I've read a book using the
tablet I then use ES File Explorer on the tablet to move the epub file
to a sub folder ("Read"), so that later I can mark them as read in the
library on the PC. However when I open this sub folder via the PC non
of the files are visible (and the properties show the folder as having
0 files). These files are visible on ES File Explorer.
Any idea why they don't show up when viewed via the PC?
The tablet and PC are connected via USB cable, and the tablet connects
as a media device (MTP).

You need to enable "MTP" in the Hudl2developers option; if already
"enabled", disable then re-enable. Also often needed to be done
after an Android update in the cases I've encountered.

Have you tied sending the file across via Bluetooth (or email
attachment)to check that they do actually exist in the location and are
not, perhaps, a shadow of the real file?
Just a wild thought.

I emailed it from the tablet to the PC and it came across fine, and I
can open it on the PC.

After you reset the MTP, did you then exit the PC's program that
was trying to access the Hudl2 then run the program again to
connect to the Hudl2? I had to exit file manager that I use on the
PC then reran the file manager after my tablet"s MTP was reset.
If the above didn't work, your Hudl 2 may not support OTG & you
would need to download an OTG app (free) from Google Play store;
had to do that on one of my tablets.

Yes, done all that, problem still persists.

Can you suggest a good OTG app, most of the ones listed on the Google
Play Store have a lot of negative comments?
However I think that OTG is supported on the Hudl2, as I can connect
my camera via an OTG adaptor cable and download pictires from the
camera onto the tablet (which I use as a backup while on holidays).

Per Davidm: >Any idea why they don't show up when viewed via the PC? > >The tablet and PC are connected via USB cable, and the tablet connects >as a media device (MTP). No clue here. But if nothing else works, try installing TeamViewer on the tablet and the PC. TeamViewer give me a "File trans." text/button in the upper left of it's screen and that gives me full access to my phone or tablet's file system. I even just tested it by deleting a file on the phone. If you have never used TeamViewer, I would predict an hour or so on the learning curve - mainly getting it installed... but after that, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. -- Pete Cresswell

That directory, is in the memory card? Extract it temporarily, and use a
card reader on the computer to read it. Maybe run a disk check on the card.
You could use software such as "Calibre" on the computer to do the epub
sync. I have not tried to do this yet with my tablet, only with an epub
reader. It just occurred to me that it should do it.

I don't have a card reader in the PC, or a plug in USB one.

I do use Calibre on the PC and it does detect the Hudl, and displays
the book files on "Books" folder in the SD card on the tablet, but it
doesn't detect any files in the "Read" subfolder. And yes, I have
configured Calibre to use both the Books folder and it's Read sub
folder.

Regarding the OTG, I don't have any ideas but it does look like
the Hudl is working as well as the usb cable with this additional
info.
It looks like the problem is that the subfolder is the culprit. I
kind of recall a similar thing happening to me but it was a
folder not a subfolder; & it happened with 4.x & Nexus 7 or
a Nook HD+. Thought that I had created the folder on the
tablet using a windows app & an usb connection. Decided
that my problem was the win app doing the file management
& so used the tablet to do its folder creation instead from a
"remote" win app. The caveat is that the problem could have
been the reverse of what I can recall as stated.

Ah, ok. I used the PC to create that sub folder, so I'll try deleting
it then recreate it using ES File Explorer on the tablet. Will post
back with the result.

Well that didn't work either. After a few more tests:
From the PC I can see folders and files that I've created via the PC
on the SD card.
From the Hudl I can see folders and files that I've created via the PC
on the SD card.
From the Hudl I can see folders and files that I've created via the
Hudl on the SD card.
From the PC I can only see folders that I've created via the Hudl on
the SD card, NOT any files
The problem only applies to the SD card, files on the main memory can
be created and read from PC or Hudl.

The only thing I can think of is Android's method of handling files & permissions. Have you looked into the folder & file permissions? The support at Calibre Companion said that Google had changed the method it uses for the SD write/access. CC allows placing its files on a SD but within its own "personal folder"; CC also allows creating a folder at the root level for its files which I tried. Problem is that Android won't allow writing to the root level folder. I used Total Commander to change the permissions for write for the owner/group/everyone; each was tried separately. TC says it completed "successfully" but on checking the permissions again, there was no change! Also used TerminalUX to change the permissions; was done "successfully" but really NO CHANGE again. Gave up & used the "personal" directory with the long path for the ebook as I really don't need to type path anywhere, so far. Perhaps trying another SD card may work.

That's not much surprise, as the card is typically vfat format, can not take those permissions. > Perhaps trying another SD card may work. You still have not done an fsck on it. -- Cheers, Carlos.

I have a similar problem.
Here's what I kinda-sorta-think-I-learned.
In their infinite wisdom, Google decided that applications cannot write
arbitrarily to the SD card...for your protection...yeah...GRRRR!!!!
If I plug the usb cable into my android 5 phone, I can read/write the SD
card using the PC.
I can access those files on the SD card using the phone.
The problem is when I try to WRITE from the phone to the SD card.
There's only one app that can write arbitrarily to the SD card, the
myfiles app
that's on the stock android.
Other apps can only write to their own directories that they created on
the SD card.
That leaves out older apps.
Apps that keep up with the continuous juggling that google does to
android can create directories that they can write. I believe that
totalcommander can make it look like you have access to the SD card
using other apps,
but if you delete totalcommander, all the files vanish, per the
documented warning to that effect.
If you try to read the files from the PC, they may not be where
you think they are and may have different names...I never looked.
Since I have a wireless charger permanently attached to my usb port,
the only option I've discovered so far is to use wifi to access files
on a local http file server and download files to my downloads directory.
Then, I can use the myfiles app to move them to the SD card.
As you can imagine, copying 32GB of mp3s a gigabyte at a time and
manually moving them is a real PITA.
As an experiment, use myfiles to move the files on the SD card. That
should work.
If you find a better way, let us know.

myfiles app doesn't even see the SD card on my Hudl (and I've seen a
few comments along similar lines on reviews of my files).
I've now solved my original problem by creating the "Read" folder on
the main memory rather than the SD card. Means a few more "clicks" to
move the read book files to it, but no big deal. At least I can see
the files in that folder, and delete them, using the PC.

Thanks people, I'll have a look at your suggestions and post back when
I've done this.
